Chereads / The Emperor of Hollywood [Abandoned] / Chapter 9 - Ch 9: The Distribution Deal

Chapter 9 - Ch 9: The Distribution Deal

{3rd Person POV}

In the dark of the night, inside a small and cramped upped condominium, lay sitting on a chair with the light of a  computer screen shining brightly on his face was Oliver Knight. He was currently editing 'Halloween' in the middle of the night.

With the shooting completed, he had gotten another 300 Points, which was enough for him to buy Intermediate Editing. Oliver first thought of hiring an editor, but in the end, he decided to do it himself.

Really, why hire someone when you can do it yourself?

However, this had seemed to backfire a little, as the editing process had gone on for a little bit too long, at least for Oliver.

*Yawn*

A loud yawn escaped his lips as his body was too tired to continue.

"Haa, this is too much work." He turned around to look at his bed, and turned back and exited the program, and shutting off the computer.

Walking to his bed, he quietly laid down on it, and shut his eyes.

{1st Person POV}

5th August, 2007

It was now morning again, and as soon I  wake up, I quickly did my daily routine.

Coming back home, I sat on the chair and started editing the movie where I left off last night.

The last few days had been hectic, to say the least.

With me getting the script for 'The Departed', I had do to some more thinking.

I was sure 'Halloween' would be a major success, but how big of a success was it going to be? After all, 'The Departed' was a $90 MILLION DOLLARS movie. That was an insane amount of money for someone's second movie.

Though, most of the budget went to the salaries of actor. So, the budget was very much higher than it should've been.

Cut all the A-Listers, and the budget is closer to $50 million, which is more than reasonable.

The only problem would be convincing the studio execs to let me make the movie. Considering that 'The Departed' was R-rated, convincing them to give me $50 million would be really hard.

However, I didn't need to worry about that for now.

I was quite busy, with me editing this movie for 2 days straight. And this reminds me, I have to get a meeting with Red Fox too!

"*Sigh*... my life has been turned upside down. Gotta get used to it, I guess."

The good news (I guess) was that there was only 20 minutes of footage left to edit!

As soon as the movie was edited, I was going to get Uncle David set up a meeting with me and Red Fox.

And that's why even though It was a tiring process, I still tried to be done with the editing process as quick as possible.

"Aaah~~ It's done!" I said with my hands up in the air.

I picked up my mobile phone and dialed Uncle's number.

"Hello? Oliver, what's up?" He asked in a casual tone.

"You remember when you told me that you could setup a meeting between me and Red Fox? Yeah? Well, the time's come for that."

"Has it already? If so, then I'll help you. I'll message you the date later. See you later then" Uncle was about to cut the call, but I interrupted.

"Wait a minute. Can you watch the finished movie? I'd like some feedback."

"Sure. Just send it to me."

I was relieved a bit, and then said. "Will do." I then cut the call.

I turned my head to my right, and looked at the ever-so blue sky.

"I'll change this world forever." I said in a low voice.

{3rd Person POV}

The day of the meeting had arrived, and with that, Oliver was on his way to Red Fox Studio's HQ for the distribution deal.

He was currently inside of a taxi, thinking to himself.

"I'd need to start writing 'The Departed' really quickly. May is always a packed month filled with huge movies,  especially the last two weeks that capitalise on Memorial day weekend. Compared to that, March and April are generally more less packed. Easter isn't as big, and it's date is always moving."

He shifted on the seat a little bit, and continued. "I'd need to start pre-production in late October, otherwise I won't get it in time." An idea popped up in his mind.

"I need to make my image that of a director who produces movies quickly and with a small budget. That way, Studios would be more willing to fund my projects."

He looked to the corner of his eyes, and saw that he had arrived at Red Fox Studio.

Getting out, he walked straight inside of the building.

There, he saw his Uncle with an old man who looked to be in his 50's. He was wearing a business suit and had slightly white hair.

Both of them were talking to each other when David noticed Oliver.

"Ah, Oliver! There you are!" David motioned Oliver to come towards them.

"Mr. Williams, meet Oliver Knight, the kid I was telling you about." Williams nodded and David then turned  to Oliver. "Oliver, meet Noah Williams, the distribution head of Red Fox."

Noah brought his hand forward, which Oliver returned.

"David told me lot of good things about you. I sure do hope they're true." Noah said to Oliver.

"Alright, then let's get inside the projector room, shall we?" Said David while walking ahead.

Noah walked alongside David, with Oliver soon following after the both of them.

Noah opened the door of a room, and entered inside with David and Oliver entering after him.

Oliver looked around the room.

It was dimly lit, with a projector screen on the wall. It had a big oval-shaped table in the middle. Both Noah and David had taken their seats, while Oliver took out a Pen Drive and inserted it into the computer.

The movie had started, and Oliver quickly took a seat.

"Please like the movie." Hoped Oliver.

"Let's see if you're truly as great as Mr. Moore is making you out to be." Thought Noah.

The screen turned black, and then the main theme of the movie started playing, followed by the credits for the people who worked on the movie. After a while, a pumpkin appeared, and the screen started zooming on it slowly, as the screen got darker and darker, till the credits were over and two words appeared:

Haddonfield, Illinois

And the movie started with a 1st Person POV of a child in a clown costume, staring at two teenagers from outside the house.

Noah was looking intently at the movie, while David had a confident smirk. Oliver on the other hand, was sweating.

He knew the movie was good, but was that truly enough for Red Fox to distribute his movie? What if Noah didn't like the movie? He'll be doomed. His career would have ended before it even started.

That was his thought process.

However, as the movie went on, his greatest fear slowly went away. And at the end of the movie, Noah stood up and clapped.

This shocked Oliver who stared at Noah dumbfoundedly.

"Eh?"

Noah looked in Oliver's direction with a smile. "I have to say, this movie is truly amazing. I haven't watched a horror movie like this since The Devil Inside Me.  Mr. Moore wasn't lying when he said you made an amazing movie."

"Now." Noah said as his face turned serious. "Onto the distribution deal."

Oliver firmly looked at Noah. "Considering the movie is already done and all, I think a release date in October or November is feasible. What do you think?" Asked Noah with his head tilted to his right.

"That's fine by me. Though, I'd like it if you could release it in October, preferably before Halloween weekend."

Noah nodded at Oliver's request. "We can certainly do that. So, onto th-"

"I have one more request." Noah looked at Oliver with interest, and gestured him to continue.

"I want you to premiere this in the Toronto International Film Festival." David looked surprised, while Noah was mostly unphased.

If you didn't know, Film Festivals are the places where Indie directors can show their movies and win awards for them. Obviously, winning an award also means getting some distributor' attention.

However, Oliver had skipped the last part, so there really wasn't much of a need to show it there. Except for one thing; buzz. The Toronto Film Festival was the largest Independent film festival in North America. Not only that, it was THE largest in general.  It was also the only large film festival that is in September.

So, winning the Horror category would create a lot of buzz before release, as well as positive reception from the critics. And Oliver wanted all that.

Noah stared at him for a little while before sighing. "Fine. That'll only help us anyway."

"So, about the profit sharing. The general rule is 20%, no? We'll just go with tha-" Before Noah could finish his sentence, Oliver interrupted him.

"No, I want 30% for domestic. If you release it internationally, I want 20% for that."

This had seemed to irked Noah, as his tone became more hostile. "30% is a bit too much. 20% is far more ideal."

"Look, I need the money to make my second movie. 30% is better."

"We can't do that. You're just an indie. Plus, 20% would be more than enough to make your second movie."

David had been watching from the sidelines till now. However, he had to stepp in before this meeting went haywire.

"Calm down, people!" Said David, taking both of their's attention. "Oliver, how about you take 25%? That sound nice to you?" He asked, to which Oliver reluctantly nodded. David the turned to Noah, and asked the same thing. He , too, complied.

"See? That wasn't hard enough, was it?"

The both of them then continued talking about the deal, and it ended on a positive note,

Oliver gave his goodbyes to David and left for his house. On his way home, he thought about the future of the movie.

"Mr. Noah was fine with me having the sequel rights, so that was a good thing. I didn't want Red Fox to have the rights and potentially ruin the franchise, though that happening was a low choice."

At first, Noah was a bit reluctant on not getting the sequel rights, but when he heard Oliver's reasoning, he understood and didn't bother him.

Oliver's reasoning was that he wanted to 'Halloween' to be a trilogy, and not more than three movies were to be released.

While thinking about this, Oliver arrived at his house.

He looked at it from the outside, and thought. "I really need to gr a new house. This one is too cramped and small."

And soon, he entered his condominium, and took a good night's sleep.
