Chapter 11 - Menace to society

Saturday came quickly. Eva did everything to keep the girls occupied and happy in the morning. She told them that their uncle Callum will come but they started to be worried about it so she distracted them. They spend a morning dressed up in silly onesies, being silly and laughing.

"We are young, we are green, keep our teeth nice and clean!" Eva and the girls sung at the top of their voices while they were making their lunch. Eva kept her eye on the time. Hour and a half until Callum were to show up. Eva put plenty of energy into her repertoire using a wooden spoon. "See our friends, see the sights!!!" Eva stopped momentarily as she noticed a dark shadow in the corner of her eye. She turned around in panic to see Callum standing in the doorway. He raised his brows but haven't said a word.

"You're earlier than I expected." Eva said as she quickly returned to the hob to stir the food in the pot, trying to not think about the fact that she still was wearing a bright pink fuzzy unicorn onesie. "Girls are yet to have lunch. You're more than welcome to join them while I finish packing their bags."

"Uh-huh." Cal mumbled taking the phone out and quickly tapping on it.

"Feel free to sit down." Eva pointed towards the sofa at the other side of the room. It was mostly an open plan apartment, with living room, dining room, and kitchen all in one space. Then there were two bedrooms and a bathroom. It was far from extravagant. It was worlds apart from Callum's home.

"Evaaa!!!" The girls exclaimed recognising the next song, prompting Eva to sing. "Again, Eva!!!"

Eva sighed knowing that she already embarrassed herself. There was nothing that she could do to change it, but she could make it worse.

Callum walked across and sat down in the armchair, looking at his phone.

"Don't wanna live as an untold story. Rather go out in a blaze of glory!!!" Eva started singing at the top of her voice, going back to previous performance which made the girls laugh. "Drums!!!" She pointed at Suzie and Emmi who started to pretend play air drums. "And guitar!!!" She started playing the air guitar before going all out in the chorus and dropping to her knees. "I wanna taste love and pain. Wanna feel pride and shame. I don't wanna take my time! Don't wanna waste one line!!!"

Callum smirked as he looked up before returning to his serious self and the phone screen. His smirk escaped Eva who was engrossed in entertaining the girls. She started using the pots that she was cooking in as her own percussion with the next songs.

"What about uncle Cal?" Suzie asked.

"What about your uncle?" Eva asked.

"He's not joining." Emmi put a frown on her little face with reddened cheeks.

Eva took a deep breath. The sacrifice she was willing to make for the girls was unmeasurable, that was for sure.

She squeezed her eyes closed and took another deep breath in.

As the new song started. She turned around and with every verse she took a step closer towards Callum, singing into the spoon as she fixated her gaze on him.

"They're gonna clean up your looks with all the lies in the books to make a citizen out of you!" She pointed at Callum with the spoon. He was still looking at the phone. He only looked up once Eva reached the chorus which she put all her energy into. Dancing a horrible version of hip-hop, breakdance, and indescribable moves equivalent to that of a seizing snake. "They said, "All teenagers scare the livin' shit out of me"!!! They could care less as long as someone'll bleed!!!"

Callum's eyes widened before he facepalmed and shook his head in what seemed to be a disapproval and second-hand embarrassment. Emmi and Suzie laughed hysterically which made Eva sure that her choice of self-destruction was right. She also found that annoying Callum with her silliness was beyond satisfying as she noticed him biting his cheek. She set herself a new challenge - to annoy him as much as she could. He was going to turn grey before long.

She twerked very badly when Callum uttered. "You're a menace to the society, Eva." And as if at the cue, a flame shoot up in the kitchen from one of the pans.

"Oh shit!" Eva screamed and run towards it, shielding the girls from the flames and the spitting oil. She managed to cover it with the lid and the flame died out. Callum appeared beside her, his phone tucked in his pocket, and looked over as if he was making sure that she didn't get anything else on fire.

"I should've listened and took you out for lunch." Callum mumbled under his nose. "I feel like it was a hint."

"Girls, lunch is almost ready. Go get changed into the clothes I've prepared." Eva instructed them in a more serious tone.

"Oooh…" girls sounded disappointed. "You can crash my car tonight. Go out, wasting all my time and money." They sung as they went to their room.

"Do you think it is appropriate to let them listen to this kind of music?" Callum asked in his deep voice, full of judgment, full of condemnation.

"It's just music." Eva shrugged.

"Music is important for their development."

"Let me guess. You're only going to let them listen to Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi?" Eva scowled at him as she was dishing out the food, trying her hardest to keep the burnt bits out of their plates.

"The studies show that classical music helps with concentration and it lowers cortisol levels."

"Rock music boosts creativity and relieves tension." Eva shrugged dismissively. "Way up way up, oh no! We gon' burn the whole house down!" She sang towards Callum.

Callum sneered in disapproval which made Eva smile at him brightly. Oh, how she was going to enjoy winding him up.
