Chapter 97 - Wrath that Runs Deep 3

Before the Daemon Incident

Oz and Edgar stood overlooking the ocean, away from the other primes

"The White City. Why Donna and Diego?"

Edgar smiled. "Why not?"

"The head of the Dark family couldn't even handle that place and got rewarded with a trip to the gallows. What makes you think that they have a chance."

"I've got a reputation to uphold, Oz." Edgar said, "Can't let them not show their talents, especially since I elected them as Primes."

"And of all the times, you chose now to prove themselves."

"Of course."

"You're insane."

"So I've been told." Edgar said. "Diego, Donna, Kael, they've all become complacent. Too carefree and lazy. Unfortunately, Kael is the only one that has proven his worth without fail. He's strong, much stronger than I, I daresay. But Diego and Donna? They've yet to show it."

"And what if it goes wrong?" Oz asked.

"In the face of danger, certain sides of a person show." Edgar said. "They might not look like it, but those two have potential."

Jhin and Kai had taken out two of the cores on the white city, but that hadn't seemed to phase it in anyway or form. The White city continued on its normal course like it had not been disturbed, producing more and more daemon on its surface. Both above and below.

"Doesn't seem like we are doing anything to it!" Kyler cried, slicing one of the daemon in half.

"You think I don't see that?!" Diego replied, catching one of his boomerangs and throwing it back at another daemon. "The sooner they take the daemon cores out the better!"

"Two of them are already down, Diego!" Donna cried, "It hasn't done anything to it."

"The hell do we do then?"

"Take it out from down here."

"Sorry to intrude but Kanon is the only one with enough firepower to shoot at it." Diego said. "Plus these daemons are not going to let it be that easy."

Donna sighed as she cut down one of the daemons. The daemon tried to crawl towards Valerie only for Kanon to disintegrate its face. "I'm guessing we're going to have to employ that tactic here."

"Hell nah." Diego said, "Does this look like a place to do that?!"

"YESS!!" Kanon, Kyler and Donna exclaimed. Donna continued. "This is one chance we might get to use it."

"You make it sound like we have to do it regularly."

"Yeah."

Kanon and Kyler swapped places, with Kanon sharpshooting three daemons while Kyler punched one daemon to the ground, with another one got sliced by invisible blades. A daemon almost reached Valerie had Diego not caught the daemon by the head and slammed it into the ground. Without a second to waste, Diego slashed of the daemon's head.

"You know that the repercussions of doing that are going to be on you, right?"

"Relax," Donna smiled, "I can handle a little bad karma. Diego walked to her side and sighed. Going down on one knee and setting down the boomerangs, he clenched his fist, putting them in front of him. The boomerangs span round Diego over and over again, disappearing until the transformed into an orange circle around Diego. A smaller, similar circle formed on Donna's back,

Raising her blade, Donna spun round gallantly, closing her eyes as if in a trance. She lifted the blade high above her head, stopping her little dance. Black goo began to leak from her blade but rather than pouring on her, the liquid seemed to rise up and swirl around her.

As Donna stepped forward, she left behind a trail of black goo, the circle above her head following her. Dropping the blade, she spun round again, splashing around the black. She slowly began to move around in a haphazard manner but still straying away from where she had been standing originally. Stopping, she struck the blade at the center of the drawing. Hands emerged from the ground, reaching out to the sky and touching the white city. The black goo began to spread around the base of the white city.

Martha had finished with her core. That made three cores gone. Jhin was on his way to the fourth one. That made her next target the bigger core.

"Kai! Are you enroute to the last core?" Martha communicated over the comms.

"Yeah. You?" Kai asked.

"Definitely." Martha said, cutting down a daemon. Jumping up into the air she twisted through to daemon, setting them on fire as she landed. She rolled to her feet on landing, pulling her claymore back and unleashing an inferno.

"Hold back, Martha!" Kai said, "We'd need your strength to take the fifth core down."

"No can do." Martha said, looking at the ground. "Prime Donna has activated Black Conception."

"That bad, huh?" Kai grunted. He passed through the corridors, turning and jumping until he finally reached the center. "I'm here! But there's nothing here!"

"What?!!" Martha exclaimed, stopping dead in her tracks.

"I said the core isn't here! Its gone." Kai repeated.

"Same here!" Jhin said, joining the call, "The fourth core is gone."

"Dammit!" Martha cried, contacting Kyler. "Kyler, there's a situation!"

"I heard! But you guys better get down from there!" Kyler said, "Something feels off."

"Roger."

Moving cores. A daemon that could shift its core was unheard off. Even if it was possible, that could only be possible if the daemon in question was in its devolved state. Diego sighed. Honestly thinking this hard while using his rei was tiring. He wished he could go back home, have a little smoke with a little of his old aging wine...

Diego's eyes widened.

"KYLER! Tell Martha and the rest of them to get off the city, Now!"

Kyler obeyed instantly, "It'll take a while sir."

"They don't have a while," Diego said, "I should have known. Daemon this old would have have adapted."

"I'm not following." Valerie said.

"Daemon are like wine." Donna said, "The older they are, the better they taste."

"Read my mind." Diego said with a smile, "This city has been sitting here for ages without anyone noticing until now. We classified it as a sin but in truth its much powerful."

Diego grit his teeth. That damned Edgar. What the hell was he thinking sending them here?
