Before a child becomes an adult, his or her godfather or godmother must bring a birthday gift to celebrate, and in some places, it is customary for the child's family to bring gifts to the godparent's home for the birthday celebration; during New Year's and festivals, the godchildren are expected to visit the godparent's home to offer gifts and respects. After the death of the godparent, the godchildren are also required to kneel in mourning before the spirit.
5. Godparents recognized during infancy may be permanent, maintaining this relationship for life, or they may be temporary, lasting as long as three to five years or as short as a fleeting encounter, after which each goes their separate ways.
