Kim abruptly sat up on bed and she ran her hands through her hair. It's been a year and the memories were still fresh in her head.
When her parents died, she was left with nothing. She was the only child and it was so hard taking care of herself.
Kim still remembered the pain in her heart when she joined military. Becoming a soldier wasn't her dream but things became so hard for her. She had been wanting to become a doctor when her parents was still alive. She dropped out of school when she couldn't pay her school fees anymore.
There was no other option left other than joining the military. The knock on the door brought her out of her reverie.
"Time for training" the tall huge man said before leaving. She followed him outside and joined the rest for training. Food was hard these days as the country's economy was getting worse.
They did fifty press-up, the huge man placed a burning flames under them as they did the press-up. If you go down too low, the heat of the flame would burn your skin.
After the training, Kim carried her water bottle and walked to the tap.
"Good morning Kim" the sudden voice startled her and she turned. The person was Blue her best friend in the military.
"Morning Blue" she offered her a gentle smile.
"The General is here and wants to see everyone. Be fast" Blue said before jogging to join the rest. Once Kim was done filling her bottle, she ran to where they all gathered.
They all stood in a straight line waiting to hear whatever the General has to say.
"Good morning" he said. "As you all may know the country economy is getting worse everyday and the government isn't doing anything about it"
"I called you all here because we're planning to do a coupon to overthrow the president and bring back military regime to this country. Civilian regime had been going on for years and the economy is getting worse every year" he continued.
"I will be selecting fifty soldiers for the coupon that would commerce tommorow night. Once you hear your name step forward"
He called the fifty soldiers both male and female. When Kim heard her name, she looked at the General startled. Did he make a mistake in calling her name?
They all stepped forward except Kim who was still confused about the whole thing. How can the Manager chose a mere person like her who just joined last year?
"Step forward!" He ordered.
"General how can you ask that of me? I'm just a common soldier who just joined last year and I don't know anything about overthrowing the President. You should send someone like Blue who knows it too well"
"This task is assigned by me and you don't have the right to say no"
"General I don't think I can accomplish the task" she said calmly.
"Is that a no?" He asked directly, his face lowered down to a cold terrified expression.
Kim felt her heart slightly drop at his cold tone. She knew the risk she was putting herself if ever she didn't agree. "I accept General" she said sadly.
"Now step forward" he ordered and she obeyed.
After he explained everything to them, they went back to their tent. Throughout the whole night, Kim couldn't sleep. What would happen if the coupon fails? Ohh she would be so dead. She is the only child of her late parents and she don't want to die.
She also can't go against the General because it might lead to severe punishment or even death. When she managed to sleep, a knock came the next hour.
"Time for training" he said and left. Kim hesitantly stood up and jogged outside for training. Today's training was a different kind. The soldiers are expected to climb a rope to the other end of river. After training, they were served food. Why was the General asking her to be among the team?
Didn't he know the risk he was putting her and the rest? If ever they made one mistake, they all would be dead.
When midnight reached, he drove a bus which they would drive to the President's house. On their way there, the only thing Kim could think of was what if the coupon fail. She won't get the chance to see her best friend Blue. She knew they would shed blood tonight. Innocent lives would be sacrificed just to protect the President.
The ride lasted for more than one hour. Why did he have to send her to this kind of task risking her live and that of others. She should have known becoming a soldier means putting your life at risk to save the people.
She wondered if she should resign right now because if the coupon were to fail and they got caught, all of the team would be dead. She might end up being a hindrance to the team.
As the General said earlier, this was for the betterment of the country. When the bus stopped, they all came down one after the other.
