Well, there wasn't really an and then. Li Chang Hu got in contact with the correct people, and after a few days of generic preparations and getting an okay from the security wing, Old Gao was approved. In any case, Old Gao had lived in the Academy for nearly thirty years, so his background was clean there, and before that he had just been an ordinary mortal, and it wasn't too hard to check his information that way either.
If there was any 'blank' spot that had to be pointed out, it was that his cultivation technique was unclear, but that had basically been explained away, and after having Old Gao show his scroll to a few people, one of them was able to confirm it indeed had a Heavenly aura on it, and his story should check out.
After that, Old Gao was brought to the library, and the rest was pretty much history.
