The act of deceiving oneself based off the way that others treated us wasn't really anything wrong, and it was a very common human behavior. It didn't help that many people were born with an innate sense of imposter syndrome, feeling like they were a fraud at things they were very much good at. With this feeling being associated with things we were talented at, it only got worse with things we really weren't good at. Thus, as humans it was typical to try to gauge ourselves based off the reactions of those around us.
If nothing went wrong then… it should be good enough?
