|An Anonymous Letter|
If you can see this, my brother, then my greatest fear is before me. I have made poor choices I am not proud of, and I know for certain that some of them affected you and our loved ones. This is not a letter meant to justify my shortcomings or vent at you for being born ahead of me. This is a letter written from the sincerity of my heart. There are no words in any language existing to humanity that will make up for the wrongs I did to you. This is a letter of apology to you, yet I do not regret my actions, and I feel no guilt for them. If you can see this, then I can say for certain that the last time you saw me would be the last time you saw me. I am going far away, a place where you can't reach out to me, a place where I can't cause you pain and bleed you to death. I know I have taken someone along with me, someone who should be behind bars, and I can only imagine how that makes you feel, but I will not apologize, not for saving the one who gave me life. Inside that envelope is the address of my last landed property in Lagos, and inside it is a consolation prize you would find useful to you. I have an agreement with him, so nor fear; he nor go stress you.

"General Abiola walks into a room filled men and women of the armed forces"
MAJOR ADEOLA
(Salutes Gen Abiola)
Welcome, General.
GEN ABIOLA
(Smiles at Adeola)
My son has made me proud.
(Salutes Adeola)
GEN DEJI
I guess we are going ahead with our plans.
GEN ABIOLA
Yes, we are. This is the best time to strike. A question mark has been placed on the integrity of the ruling party. They are vulnerable now.
MAJOR ADEOLA
What about the Table members?
GEN ABIOLA
(Turns to Adeola)
We kill them! We kill them all, son.
COLONEL PETERS
(Turns to Gen Abiola)
With your permission, General, I would start stationing our troops at the borders and airports.
GEN ABIOLA
Permission granted! We have been planning this coup for years, so we cannot fail. This is our opportunity screaming at us. We must seize our moment.
"Yes, sir," they responded."
GEN DEJI
(Walks up to Gen Abiola)
Congratulations, General. Victory will be ours.
GEN ABIOLA
It certainly will. As long as we all stick to the plan and play our roles. First, we must destabilize the capital territory and Lagos. The north is a piece of cake since most of them are already on our side.
GEN DEJI
Everything will go as planned, General. Nothing will stop us. As we are talking, our people are scared across all geographical zones. I will be leaving for Abuja now. Stay safe, General.
GEN ABIOLA
You too, General.
"General DEJI walks out of the scene."
MAJOR ADEOLA
I will be leaving for Lagos now.
GEN ABIOLA
Very good. You know what to do, right? Get your sister out of that place. I have reserved a private plane that will take all of you to Benin Republic. I have some contacts there. They will keep you safe.
MAJOR ADEOLA
Wait a minute. I understand, Dad. Are you sending me along with them?
GEN ABIOLA
Yes, son. You will leave with your siblings and mother. When everything is over, you all can return.
MAJOR ADEOLA
I understand that you want to protect me, Dad, but I am a military man who has sworn an oath. I cannot run away from danger.
GEN ABIOLA
You are going with them. That's final.
MAJOR ADEOLA
But Dad, I am needed here. You need all the hands you can get.
GEN ABIOLA
(Snaps)
Major Adeola Abiola, I am not asking you to do this. This is an order. I do not care what you think. Have I made myself clear?
(Adeola gazes at Gen Abiola)
I believe I am not talking to myself?
MAJOR ADEOLA
(Salutes Gen Abiola)
Permission to carry out your command, General?
GEN ABIOLA
Permission granted.
(Salutes Adeola)

BAYO
Mum, why are you still here? Haven't you seen the news?
MRS B BALOGUN
I have, Bayo. That is why I called you, Bayo.
BAYO
Pack up now, we have to go!
Mrs B BALOGUN
Alright.
(Picks up her bag)
But first, we have to meet up with Lolade.
BAYO
Whatever, Mum, we have to go now.
(Pulls her out of the room)
"Temi walks into the scene"
TEMI
Mum, where are you going?
BAYO
What kind of stupid question is that, Temi? Haven't you seen the news?
TEMI
What news?
Mrs B BALOGUN
A lot of evidence has been exposed about my involvement in what happened to your Dad and Adebisi. They are coming for me, my love.
TEMI
What?
BAYO
We have to go now, Mother.
TEMI
Where are you taking her to, Bayo?
BAYO
Anywhere far from here.
TEMI
And you think that is the solution to this?
BAYO
Do you have a better option, smart ass?
TEMI
(Turns to Bisola)
Mum, despite all that you have done, I still love you. Please, this is not the solution to this.
Mrs B BALOGUN
I have failed you and your siblings, Temilade. And I'm sorry.
TEMI
Mum, you know you can beat this. Surrender to your crimes. Come clean, Mum. Please.
BAYO
She will do no such thing! How can you say that to her? All because that Adebisi and her crazy son have brainwashed you.
TEMI
Bayo, deep down you know this is not the right thing to do.
BAYO
This isn't about what is right or wrong. Temi, open your eyes. We live in an unfair world. Come with me, Mother.
(Pulls Bisola by the hand)

"Ayo paces around the room"
ADEBISI
Ayo, you have to relax.
Mr. A BALOGUN
How can I relax, Adebisi? Do you understand how serious this is? They have been planning a coup right under our nose. We are finished, Adebisi.
ADEBISI
No, we are not. Nothing is certain yet. They are yet to bring down the current government.
Mr A BALOGUN
And they will. Do you know why? Because this is the weakest any of our democratic administrations has ever been. The president is a wanted person, the House of Assembly is disorganized, for the first time in history, the Table didn't see something like this coming, and the fact that the ruling party is not on good terms with the Table makes all of this even more worrisome.
ADEBISI
Calm down, Ayo. Nothing is certain yet.
"Taiwo walks into the room"
TAIWO
I wouldn't be too sure of that.
Mr. A BALOGUN
(Turns to Taiwo)
What is it?
TAIWO
The military has taken over The Federal Capital.
Mr A BALOGUN
(sits down)
As expected. I still don't understand why Gen Abiola is doing this to us.
TAIWO
Isn't it obvious?
We sent his daughter to jail. What else would have inspired such a move?
ADEBISI
But this is a very structured coup! It's obvious they have been planning this for years. The situation must have pushed him to take action now, but I don't think she's his sole reason for doing this.
Mr A BALOGUN
(Gets up to leave)
I will be back.
TAIWO
Where are you going?
Mr A BALOGUN
I need to talk to your Grandfather. We have to find a solution to this. Even if it means uniting with Lolade. We can't let this happen.
ADEBISI
Ayo, I don't think that is a good idea. Chief has been listed as a wanted man. As a matter of fact, you shouldn't be out there.
TAIWO
Mum is right. We should stay away from Grandpa for now, and these military men mean business; they are killing Table Members, Dad.
Mr A BALOGUN
I won't sit and watch my fatherland fall. I worked my ass off to get where I am; I can't just let it go. (Gets up) I have to see Chief; there must be some kind of solution to this. (Walks out of the room)

Mrs. B BALOGUN
You told me you were going to take care of this, Lolade.
LOLADE
Relax, Bisola, I'm on it.
Mrs. B BALOGUN
You keep telling me that. We have become wanted civilians in our own country, and you are asking me to relax? You must be a joker.
LOLADE
What is your problem, woman? Can't you see that I am in the same mess as you are? If you feel like I can't get things done, then the door is open.
BAYO
That's enough, guys! We have to find a solution to this. Screaming at each other won't solve our problem. (Turns to Lolade) Aunt, what are your plans?
LOLADE
First, we have to reach out to Chief.
Mrs. B BALOGUN
Are you even listening to yourself? So that is your plan?
BAYO
Mum, calm down. Let's hear her out first.
LOLADE
We need the Table to make this work. Only an alliance with them can save us from this coup. But first, we have to find a way to leave the country.
BAYO
I don't think leaving will solve our problem. We have to deal with this. We can't let the military rob us of what is ours.
Mrs. B BALOGUN
Leaving the country should be our top priority, Bayo.
BAYO
Then what's next? You both be on the run for the rest of your lives? This is a coup, Mum; they will turn the earth upside down just to find you guys, especially you, Aunt. (Turns to Lolade)
LOLADE
Then we stick to my plan. I will speak to some of my people to find a private jet that will get us out of here. Bayo, go to Chief and try to convince him to meet us at the airport.
BAYO
Alright. (Turns to Bisola) Please be careful. Wait for me at the airport.
Mrs. B BALOGUN
Alright. Please be careful, son. These men in uniform wouldn't hesitate to gun you down.
BAYO
I will be fine, Mum.
