Chapter 20 - The Mortal Village

The next morning, Serenya and Casey woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the smell of fresh pine trees. They were both surprised to see that Rowan was already up and had started to pack up their campsite.

"Good morning," Rowan greeted them with a warm smile.

"Good morning," Serenya and Casey replied in unison.

As they ate breakfast and prepared to continue on their journey, Serenya couldn't help but feel a bit envious of Rowan's seemingly effortless perfection. He was an elf, after all, and had centuries of experience to hone his skills.

"I can't believe how skilled he is," Casey whispered to Serenya as they watched Rowan break camp with ease.

"I know," Serenya replied, a hint of frustration in her voice. "He makes it all look so easy."

But despite their initial feelings of inadequacy, Serenya and Casey were grateful for Rowan's help. They knew that they couldn't have escaped the magic circle without him, and they were grateful for his guidance and expertise.

As they continued on their journey, Rowan led the way. His keen senses and knowledge of the land allowed them to avoid potential dangers and obstacles. They travelled through dense forests, over rugged mountains, and across fast-flowing rivers.

As they rode their horses, Rowan shared stories of his travels and adventures, regaling them with tales of battles won and lost, friendships made and lost, and the mysteries of the world beyond.

Serenya and Casey were fascinated by his stories, and as they listened, they began to see him in a new light. He wasn't just a skilled fighter and guide, he was a true adventurer and a great spy, with a thirst for knowledge and experience that drove him forward.

As the sun began to set, they set up camp for the night, with Rowan once again taking charge of the preparations. He gathered wood for the fire and began to set up their sleeping arrangements.

As he worked, Casey approached him. "Thank you for everything you've done for us," she said, her voice filled with gratitude.

"It's my pleasure," Rowan replied with a smile. "I'm just happy to help."

Serenya watched from a distance, feeling a sense of admiration for Rowan's humility and kindness. She knew that they were lucky to have him by their side on this mission.

As they sat around the fire that night, Serenya, Casey, and Rowan talked late into the night, sharing stories, laughter, and companionship. For the first time in a long time, they felt a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose, and a sense of hope.

And as they drifted off to sleep under the stars, Serenya knew that whatever lay ahead, they would face it together, with Rowan by their side.

As they rode across the rolling hills, the trio of travellers experienced a range of emotions. Casey felt a sense of relief and excitement at the thought of finally fulfilling her quest to find the Great Snow Witch. Serenya was equally determined, but also anxious about the dangers that lay ahead. And Rowan, ever the stoic elf, kept his thoughts to himself as he guided the group through unfamiliar terrain.

As they journeyed deeper into the wilderness, the scenery changed dramatically. The lush green fields gave way to dense forests, where they encountered all manner of creatures. Some were harmless, like rabbits and deer, while others were more sinister, such as packs of wolves and giant spiders.

Serenya used her magic to create a protective barrier around their campsite each night, allowing them to rest easy without fear of attack. But the danger of their mission was always present, weighing heavily on their minds.

Despite the challenges, they pressed on, their spirits buoyed by the shared goal of freeing their fellow elves from bondage. They spent their days traversing rugged terrain, forging through rivers and streams, and navigating treacherous mountain passes. Nights were spent huddled around the campfire, sharing stories and strategies for the task ahead.

As the days passed, they grew closer, bonding over the shared experience of their journey. Casey felt a newfound sense of belonging, having never known true friendship before. Serenya, too, who was out to help a friend for the first time in a long while was happy to help her.

And Rowan, though he remained aloof, secretly appreciated the company of his newfound allies. For so long, he had operated as a lone agent in the service of Lucius. But now, he saw the value in working with others towards a common goal.

As the trio approached the outskirts of the mortal village, they were struck by the beauty of the place.

Tall trees lined the streets, providing a canopy of lush greenery and a hint of the vibrant life within. The buildings were constructed of white stone, and the cobbled roads were lined with colourful flowerbeds, making the village seem like a paradise. The river that ran through the centre of the village sparkled in the sunlight, and the air was filled with the melodious sounds of birdsong. It was a tranquil and inviting place, and the trio felt a sense of peace and wonder as they gazed upon it. and beauty and the travellers felt inspired by the sight.

"Now, how are we going to find your brother?" Casey asked.

Serenya hesitated, "Ahem, well I can try to catch his soul ribbon through my magic!"

Rowan's eyebrows raised in surprise, "You can actually do that?"

Serenya felt like a heavy weight fell on her head as he said, "I can manage. I am not perfect but I can try."

"Have you ever done that?" Rowan asked curiously.

Serenya said with a poker face, "Three hundred years ago, I did that. Haha"

"WHAAAATTTT?" Casey asked in shock. "Are you a young-looking great-grandma?" Casey's voice increased with each word.

"What are you talking about? We elves don't age fast," Serenya explained.

"Oh," Casey sounded as if she was disappointed, "By the way, what are these soul ribbons?"

"Soul ribbons are the visualization of the soul into threads that spiritually aware people can follow," Rowan explained. "This is a high-level technique."

Casey listened intently, wondering just how many new things she is going to discover during her journey.

"Let's start with town hall then," Rowan said.

As they rode closer to the town, Serenya began to feel an overwhelming sense of unease. She knew that finding her brother would not be an easy task, but she was determined to do whatever it took, after all, it was a matter of pride and image.

As they approached the town hall, Serenya's heart began to race. She dismounted her horse and approached the entrance, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of her brother.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, focusing all her energy on her magical abilities. She extended her hands and whispered a spell under her breath, her fingers tingling with energy.

Serenya closed her eyes and focused on her inner power, feeling the familiar energy coursing through her body. With a deep breath, she lifted her hands and began to move them in intricate patterns, weaving the spirit ribbons around her.

As she opened her eyes, she saw that the ribbons had multiplied, stretching out in all directions like a web. Each ribbon glowed with a soft blue light, pulsing with the rhythm of her heartbeat.

Serenya focused her mind on her brother, searching for any trace of his presence. She reached out with her senses, feeling the ribbons brush against her skin as they moved, seeking out the essence of her brother.

Suddenly, she felt a tug on one of the ribbons, pulling her attention in a new direction. With a gasp, she followed the ribbon, allowing it to guide her through the twisting paths of the spirit world.

The ribbons continued to multiply and weave around her, forming a complex network that stretched in all directions. Serenya's eyes darted back and forth, tracking the ribbons as they led her deeper into the spirit world.

As she moved forward, the ribbons began to glow brighter and brighter, their light piercing through the darkness of the spirit realm. Serenya could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she drew closer and closer to her brother's essence.

Finally, her search led her to a small alleyway behind a tavern. She opened her eyes and saw a faint blue glow emanating from a door at the end of the alley.

Without hesitation, she walked towards the door, her heart pounding in her chest. She placed her hand on the doorknob and took a deep breath before opening the door.

Inside, she saw her brother, bound and gagged, lying on the ground. A man stood over him, a wicked grin on his face.

"Br-brother!!!!"
