...
Getting ready to leave, Irina finally took a hot shower after what felt like an eternity. As she watched her weak, pale reflection in the mirror, she realized it was time to reclaim the healthy habits she had long neglected. After all, when was the last time she felt the sun on her skin or engaged in any physical activity? No wonder she felt anemic and unwell.
The relentless pace of the Unbreakable routine had pushed her body to its limits, and she was grateful that chapter was over.
Irina had an Envoy named ZDF987, but as her role in the storyline diminished and the plot concluded, his presence became increasingly subdued. With their task complete, their bond, once essential as a mediator between the plot, the audience, and Irina, had loosened. ZDF987 had been more than an assistant; he had ensured that every twist and turn unfolded as planned. His kindness, even his humor, was a lifeline in a world that could be unbearably harsh without a shred of compassion.
Without that warmth, the narrative itself might have crumbled.
Her primary mission had been to carry out the Unbreakable storyline as the quintessential villain. It was a daunting task, but she had succeeded. Just as the hero emerged unscathed, so did the villain, allowing her to leave behind the confines of her past life and embrace newfound freedom. Yet, for the story to reach its conclusion, every element had to align with its intended purpose, and ZDF987 was chiefly responsible for that orchestration.
Irina's naturally kind personality often clashed with the demands of playing a ruthless villain. Her moral principles and genuine feelings would frequently get in the way of fully embracing cruelty. In that moment, the real Irina, her feelings and desires, had to be set aside, even as the character grew increasingly savage and wild.
"Do you think we won any prizes?" ZDF987's playful, slightly teasing tone rang out. Though the robotic quality of his voice was unmistakable, it carried a lightness that made Irina smile. Their relationship was complicated. Being forced into a role that ran counter to her true nature had always troubled her. Yet, as Unbreakable came to an end, it felt as if a tremendous burden had been lifted.
Despite the conclusion of the storyline, Irina remained confined for a long time, while the narrative shifted its focus to the budding romance and everyday life of Emil and Bella. Her character had been seen only rarely since her arrest. In an unexpected twist, even imprisonment had brought a strange kind of peace.
Who could have imagined that being locked away might ultimately be a blessing in disguise?
ZDF987 did his best to make her days less lonely. Even though Irina knew her freedom was imminent, he would pop in to ask about her well-being or reminisce about the fans who cheered them on. Still, the slow pace of life in prison made the hours drag on endlessly.
As the hot water cascaded over her face, the stress and fatigue seemed to melt away into the steam. Running a hand through her hair, she sighed and admitted, "I don't know, everyone is praising us…" Though she wasn't truly excited about the accolades, ZDF987's enthusiasm was infectious. He laughed and applauded, confident that he had done a commendable job. Many would envy his position as the Envoy of the great Irina. For her, however, no award could compare to the simple joy of returning home to her little dog. The accolades meant little when the memories of Unbreakable were so bittersweet.
Sure, Unbreakable had been the season's standout story, unparalleled in its raw, unfiltered drama. Yet, was it truly something to be proud of, if pride came solely from being monstrously vile? Perhaps it was fitting that Irina was the first villain to receive a role as significant as that of any hero. Her passionate, if conflicted, performance had resonated with the public, drawing empathy and even support despite her ruthless actions.
Not everyone accepted the System Plots as genuine art.
Critics argued that the characters' good and bad actions were nothing more than shameless performances, a mere lie for their true nature. Many believed that if someone was capable of real harm, there was no script behind it; it was just the unvarnished truth of human behavior.
Then there were the radical anti-system groups, who demanded severe punishment for people like Irina. To them, her actions were unforgivable crimes that must be stopped at all costs. Yet if that were truly the case, Irina wouldn't have suffered the inner torment she felt each time she acted against her own instincts, against her brother or Bella.
The weight of her actions made sleep elusive, as she grappled with the moral cost of her deeds.
ZDF987 could sense Irina's inner conflict, always treating her thoughts with respect, even if he wasn't directly called upon to intervene. Despite everything, he was genuinely pleased to see that they had reached such a significant milestone with Unbreakable. This project had been his life's great work, and though he strove to keep his emotions in check, it was never easy.
Within the System's universe, forging connections was almost as natural as the brain forming synapses. The Sent Ones and the Chosen Ones were predestined to link, to communicate as one. In that sense, ZDF987 and Irina were forever intertwined, and now, with tensions eased, he longed simply for a harmonious relationship with her.
"I think we'll take all the awards, even Best System..." ZDF987 declared with a hint of mischief.
Finally, the water shut off, leaving only the soft patter of droplets. Irina reached for the towel hanging by the shower and dried herself, not in any hurry to extend the conversation, a nuance that ZDF987 quickly noted.
Changing the subject, she asked, "Do you think Bella and Emil are okay?"
After a thoughtful pause, the Envoy responded. It wasn't an easy question for him, as his focus had always been on Irina. Yet, in the mingling of fiction and reality, some truths remained elusive. He acknowledged that while the possibility of Bella and Emil truly falling in love was real, there was also the risk that their relationship could deteriorate into its polar opposite. During Unbreakable, every emotion had been raw and palpable, pains and tears interwoven with fleeting moments of joy. Even if The System could quickly mend wounds, the scars would linger for some time.
In that complex tapestry of emotions, every thread, from love to hatred, from longing to resentment, remained vividly alive.
