Chapter 9 - Like a daughter to me

Gulp*

"Hey! Hey!" William yelled as he rushed to Ha Rin and opened her mouth

Ha Rin's joyful smile quickly faded away, replaced with confusion.

"Did you just swallow that?!" William yelled and moved to forcibly make Ha Rin throw up, but Ha Rin hit his hand away before he could do that.

"Eh... I hate you!" Ha Rin cried before running to Hannah's grasp and began glaring at William with fierce eyes.

"Uh... why did you do that?" Confused, Hannah asked. From what Hannah knew, William wasn't the kind of person that would torment little kids.

"It's because that blue rock is from that thing," William replied while pointing over to the general location of the burnt corpse, his expression gradually darkening.

"Eh...?" Hannah was shocked. Although the burnt corpse was beyond a self of liquor, Hannah knew what William was pointing at.

"A-are you okay? Do you feel anything strange?" Hannah worriedly asked, opening Ha Rin's mouth. "S-spit everything out!"

"E-eh?" Ha Rin became bewildered. Just what was it that she ate?

"Why would you give her something like that?!" Hannah then redirected her anger toward William.

"I didn't know she would put it into her mouth!"

"Of course, she would. She's only five years old! Kids these ages put anything in their mouth!"

Hannah was irritated, but feeling Ha Rin's little tug, she shifted her attention back to Ha Rin.

"U-um, what was that blue thingy? Was it something..." As Ha Rin continued to talk, her eyes began to water.

"No-no-no! It was nothing!" Hannah shook her head.

"It was from that zombie over there," William spoke with a nonchalant expression.

Hannah glared at William but said nothing.

"Ah... Then I'm I going to die...?" Ha Rin began sobbing.

"No, that isn't going to happen. If it did something, then she should have already turned," William explained. "From what I saw and depending on where you get bit, the fastest you turn is about ten seconds."

"You're going to be fine." William smiled and patted Ha Rin's head. "Sorry for scaring you earlier

"Uh-huh." Ha Rin nodded. "T-then I'm sorry for saying that I hated you..."

William laughed at Ha Rin's response.

"Okay... it's a relief that nothing happened, but are you sure that it will bring Ha Rin any good?" Hannah asked.

"I don't know." William shook his head. "It can affect her negatively or positively. We don't know."

"Positively?" Hannah laughed. "This shit looks radioactive!"

"Haaa…" William sighed. "Ha Rin is fine. That's all we need to know."

"Uh, you're right."

Hannah also sighed as she down on the wooden counter. Her eyes then drifted onto Ha Rin.

"Instead of eating any more blue rocks, why don't you just pick a bag of candy?" Spoke Hannah.

"Really?" Ha Rin's eyes brightened.

"Yea, but only on this aisle, don't go anywhere else!"

"Okay!"

"And only one bag!"

"Un!" She nodded.

Ha Rin then examined the many different types of candy displayed on the shelves with exhilaration. Though she was able to pick out any candy she wanted, it was only one bag.

"You seem quite fond of her." William voiced.

"Yea, you can say Ha Rin brings out the maternal side of me."

"Well, wouldn't you say you're doing too much for here?"

"What do you mean?" Hannah raised an eyebrow.

"You almost died trying to save her."

"... I'm only doing the least for her," Hannah said sternly. "At this point, she's like a daughter to me."

"That's a very bold claim."

"I'll take that as a compliment."

Just then, Ha Rin came running towards Hannah with a gigantic bag of gummies, almost the size of her head.

"Eh? I did say one bag, but..." Hannah looked at Ha Rin and realized that shed been outsmarted by her. "Fine..."

"Yay!" Ha Rin raised her hands in victory.

Hannah let out a deep breath while shaking her head.

"Hmmm?" Hannah shifted her gaze toward the entrance of the liquor store.

Bang! Bang!

"Hick...!" Hannah skipped a breath when he saw the ugly sight of an infected beyond the glass door.

"What wrong?" Ha Rin questioned and also looked for herself. "Eek!"

William immediately went on full alert. "We should get out of here as soon as possible," William suggested, and Hannah nodded frantically without making a single squeak.

William then saw school bags lying around and grabbed two, one for him and the other for Hannah.

"Stock up on food. If this is an actual apocalypse, then we don't know when we'll find more food." Said, William.

"Alright." Hannah received the bag from William and began back the bag full of consumables.

They packed canned food, chips, water, and whatever they thought they needed for the long run.

As they were all doing this, Ha Rin tried her best to be useful and kept watch on the infected by the door.

The infected rabid actions seemed to have died down, realizing that it count break in, so it seemed to be waiting outside, like a cat by a mouse hole.

"Alright, let's go." William tossed the bag over his back and picked up Ha Rin.

"Eh?" Ha Rin winded her eyes upon realizing she was being carried by someone other than Hannah.

"What's wrong? You don't like me?" William asked jokingly.

"N-no..." Ha Rin shook her head from side to side, face flush.

"That's good to hear." William chuckled, but as his eyes shifted toward the entrance, the atmosphere around him drastically changed. "Cover your ears and close your eyes."

"O-okay..." Ha Rin did as she was told.

"Wait, what are you trying to do? Let me carry her." Hannah interrupted.

"No, we're going to be running as fast as we can, so I'm carrying her."

"Alright..."

Quietly stepping towards the store's entrance, William stopped in front of the infected to stare it down.

"You look damn ugly." After saying those words, he brought out his handgun and shot two rounds right into its knees.

Bang! Bang!

William didn't waste any time after firing those two rounds and brought up his right leg to kick the infected onto the floor.

"Let's go!" William yelled and pushed the table

As this was happening, simultaneously, not too far away, a horde of infected perked their heads up and began rushing towards William.

"Oh shit!" Hannah couldn't help but curse when seeing those infected run towards them.

"Don't look at them; just run!" William shouted.

"Where the hell are we going anyways?!" Hannah yelled back.

"Just somewhere with fewer cars!"

At this point, they were both having a major adrenaline rush.

Thankfully just moving one block away was enough to see a decrease of vehicles on the road.

"Here! Get in this car!" William stopped and got inside the driver's seat.

"Huh?!" Hannah skidded to a complete stop and quickly entered the car's passenger door.

Hannah wasn't sure if William chose this car because it was the closest one or because it was nice.

It was a Porsche 911 Carrera that seemed heavily modified.

"Here." William handed Ha Rin to Hannah.

William scrambled to place his finger on the start button, but once the engine was roaring, William slammed his foot on the pedal that sent them zooming.
