Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Kade

Back at the house I could still smell her. Her scent had seeped into everything, even me. I rubbed my face to erase her from my mind. She kept reappearing. She had whimpered in her sleep last night, like a child, begging someone to leave her alone. Who could it be?

The rage from not knowing the answer made me ram my fist into the wall and damage yet another part of my makeshift home. It was falling apart anyway. Its remains were empty, like me, my life, my needs.

Did I even have needs anymore? I had been so caught up in the years of adjusting to the change, accepting my parents' deaths, as well as fighting off competitive packs, I hadn't questioned if anything else mattered anymore. I hadn't wondered if there was something missing. Someone missing

There was someone I was seeming to need now though. It was a need so great I was losing all other train of thought. Ava. I needed her in a way I hadn't needed anyone in a long time, but the last time I fell for a pretty face and vulnerable face I paid the price.

Miranda.

The recollection of her name made my skin crawl. She's turned out to be a leader of her own pack, a conniving she-wolf who had seduced and tricked me to get closer to mine. Leaders like her wanted every pack to be female here. It was ambitious, but not likely if I had anything to do with it.

I suspected she may have even helped to kill my family.

The large crater in my gut resurfaced, dragging me down to my knees. I wanted to be able to weep like Ava must have from time to time. I wanted to let go of keeping up the pretense and scream until I lost my voice, but nothing would come out. I was alone. I always would be.

"Had something bad for lunch?" asked Blaine with a slap to my back. He had the nerve to keep it there.

"Get your hand off me."

"Done. So, what you doing on the ground? Looking for something?"

I got up and headed for one of the holes in the cave. Not that you could see much out of it, just like you couldn't fully see me. "I know it's her they want."

"You do? How?"

"Call it a hunch."

"Well, you gonna tell me or not?"

"She's called Ava."

"How do you know her name?"

"They tried to turn her last night, so I brought her back here." At least, that's what I assumed they had taken her for. They would have done it right away though. They were keeping a close eye on her instead. I managed to get her away and brought her here whey wouldn't try to trespass. It was a golden rule not to cross another's lair without being affected.

"Why, you sly dawg, you."

"What?"

"Bringing her back here. What? Did you two …?"

"No. Just go. Tell Blake, and tell her to meet me here tonight. We need to find out why they've picked her."

"How we doing that?"

"By meeting a psychic. Her grandmother."

He nodded. "That can't be a coincidence can it? Her being related to the town's only psychic? She could have powers of her own that might be a threat to us."

I didn't doubt that for a second.

I just wondered if she could be powerful enough to fight off ruthless beasts.

I couldn't help hope so.
