Chapter 18 - Purgatory

"It's been a long while, Sanouyan." A figure emerged from a blinding red light, his armour rusted and ancient, each step leaving the scent of blood and iron hanging heavily in the air.

"It has indeed, Phi. Far too long," replied Sanouyan, a tall, cloaked man seated on a boulder amidst the barren wasteland. He smirked as the crimson-armored figure approached.

Phi's eyes narrowed. "I assume you've yet to complete the task set by our lord?"

Sanouyan met Phi's gaze with a defiant glare. "Isn't it obvious? I never intended to follow the orders of that fool. Your liege holds no authority in the greater realms."

Phi's lip curled into a sneer. "Hah, what else should I expect from a human like you? You've made a grave error."

With a swift motion, Phi tore through the air beside him, drawing an azure blade that gleamed menacingly. He pointed it at Sanouyan.

Sanouyan stood, towering over Phi, and brushed the dust from his cloak. "I suppose there's no need for words anymore." With a casual swipe of his hand, he sent a wave of compressed air hurtling towards his foe.

Phi's azure blade clashed against the wave of compressed air, dispersing it with a resonant hum. The ground beneath them trembled as if anticipating the coming battle.

With a swift leap, Phi closed the distance, his blade slicing through the air with deadly precision. Sanouyan dodged effortlessly, his movements fluid and unhurried.

"You think your tricks will save you?" Phi snarled, launching a flurry of attacks. Each strike was precise, aiming to pierce Sanouyan's defences.

Sanouyan sidestepped and ducked, his cloak billowing around him. He countered with a powerful kick, aiming at Phi's midsection. Phi parried with his sword, but the force of the blow sent him skidding backwards.

"The realm bends to my will, Phi," Sanouyan said, his voice calm. He raised his hand, and the ground beneath Phi shifted, throwing him off balance.

Phi stumbled but quickly regained his footing, his eyes blazing with fury. "Your tricks won't last forever," he spat, lunging forward with renewed vigour.

Sanouyan raised his arms, and the air around them thickened, making Phi's movements sluggish. Phi's blade sliced through the heavy air, but his strikes were slower, easier for Sanouyan to evade.

With a deft motion, Sanouyan manipulated the environment further. The ground beneath Phi's feet turned to quicksand, sucking at his boots. Phi struggled, his eyes narrowing in concentration. He slashed downward, his blade glowing with a fierce light, and the quicksand solidified, freeing him.

"Impressive," Sanouyan acknowledged, "but not enough." He thrust his hands forward, and pillars of earth erupted around Phi, aiming to trap him.

Phi spun, his blade a blur, shattering the pillars with each swing. Dust and debris filled the air, obscuring his vision. Sanouyan took advantage, closing the distance in an instant. His fist connected with Phi's chest, sending him crashing into a nearby boulder.

Gasping for breath, Phi staggered to his feet. "You're strong," he admitted, "but I'll not be defeated so easily."

With a roar, Phi unleashed a torrent of energy from his blade, the azure light cutting through the air towards Sanouyan. Sanouyan raised his hands, forming a barrier of condensed air, but the force of the blast shattered it, sending him sprawling.

As Sanouyan recovered, the ground beneath him rumbled, responding to his silent command. Tendrils of stone shot up, wrapping around Phi's legs and arms, immobilizing him. Phi struggled, his blade hacking at the restraints.

Sanouyan approached, his expression cold. "Yield, Phi. This realm is mine."

Phi glared up at him, defiant. "Never."

With a guttural cry, Phi summoned a surge of power, shattering the stone tendrils with a burst of raw energy. He launched himself at Sanouyan, his blade a whirlwind of azure light. Sanouyan evaded narrowly, feeling the heat of the blade singe his cloak.

The two engaged in a fierce dance of combat, their movements blurring with speed. Sanouyan's bare fists clashed against Phi's blade, each impact resonating through the desolate wasteland. With each exchange, the ground beneath them cracked and splintered, the realm itself straining under their power.

Sanouyan, sensing an opportunity, manipulated the environment once more. The air thickened around Phi, and the ground shifted beneath his feet. Phi stumbled, but he quickly adapted, using the uneven terrain to his advantage. He leapt onto a jagged rock, gaining higher ground, and lunged at Sanouyan with renewed ferocity.

Sanouyan met Phi's attack head-on, his fists enveloped in a shimmering aura of compressed air. Their clash sent shockwaves through the wasteland, shattering rocks and uprooting the few remaining dead trees. Sanouyan's control over the realm gave him an edge, but Phi's sheer determination and skill kept him in the fight.

Breathing heavily, Phi backed away, his eyes locked on Sanouyan. "You've underestimated me," he growled, channelling his remaining energy into his blade. The azure light intensified, and with a mighty swing, he unleashed a devastating wave of energy.

Sanouyan braced himself, crossing his arms in front of him. The wave of energy struck him, pushing him back, but he held his ground. He pushed back against the force, dispersing the energy with a final, forceful thrust of his hands.

Phi, exhausted and out of options, fell to one knee. "It's over, Phi," Sanouyan said softly, his voice filled with a mixture of pity and resolve. "You've fought valiantly, but this realm answers to me."

With a swift motion, the ground beneath Phi collapsed. He struggled to maintain his balance, but his sword dug into the soil, wasting his last desperate attack.

"I'm afraid I did warn you, Phi," Sanouyan said, his voice a blend of sorrow and finality. "What inane creature has possessed you to do something like this?"

But Sanouyan gave Phi no chance to answer. In one swift, brutal motion, he brought his foot down on Phi's skull, crushing it with a sickening crunch. The servant of an undeserving lord lay lifeless at Sanouyan's feet, his once fierce eyes now dull and empty.

The ground morphed one final time, swallowing Phi's body and erecting a boulder above the grave. Sanouyan sat atop it, his expression pensive.

He reminisced about the times they had once worked as one, a powerful duo united by a common cause. But now, they were both in purgatory, isolated in hell, bound by their choices and the relentless march of time. The barren wasteland around him was a stark reminder of the price of ambition and betrayal.

As Sanouyan gazed into the distance, he felt a pang of regret. In the end, he and Phi were just pawns in a game played by greater powers. Now, with Phi gone, the realm was his to command, but the victory felt hollow.

Sanouyan sighed, the weight of his actions settling heavily on his shoulders. The wind howled through the desolate landscape, carrying with it the ghosts of the past.
