Chapter 1 - War As Old As Time

The battle between the light and darkness continues as their forces, the champions fight in the fields of Faznir, a desolate place filled with nothing but death.

The champions of light, the Beacons have triumphed over the evil champions of darkness, the Scythes for a hundred years.

All thought it was the end of the never-ending battle, but they were wrong.

Amidst the raging war, the ultimate weapon of the Scythes appeared. A talented and cunning individual turned the tides of battle and favor the force of darkness after a long time.

"Light is no more! Only darkness remains!" his enigmatic armor shines in the night of the battlefield as he beheads the last surviving Beacon of Light, raising his spear well to show everyone that darkness has triumphed at last.

The reign of the Beacons' victory ended, and as they fall, darkness spreads throughout the land.

Since then, the Beacons that are gifted to wield the power of light are hunted down before they could get stronger.

Some prevailed and started their kingdom to fight against the forces of darkness, but this is not enough to stop the march of the behemoth.

So to defend their kingdoms, the surviving Beacons joined forces and banded together to protect their kingdom from the forces of darkness.

This continued for centuries with the Beacons dying before they can get a glimpse of their full potential. Since then, all of the potential Beacon candidates seek refuge in the kingdom ruled by Beacons of the old.

400 years later,

"Elizabeth! Where are you?" an old man calling out to his daughter wanders through the forest searching for her.

The night is coming, and untold dangers come only at night when the influence of darkness is far greater than during the morn.

"Where are you?! It's time to go home!" he shouts again but to no avail. "Where did that girl run off to now?" he asks himself and continues to search for her.

Somewhere on the west side of the forest, a young lady is treating an injured boar with crushed herbs. "There, it should be better in the next two days." She says to herself with an innocent smile.

Her gray-colored hair and beautiful bright skin tone emphasize her beauty further by the sun slowly setting on the horizon.

Beside her is a young man adoring her lovely and innocent smile. "You do realize that we need it for our supper, right?" he breaks the silence and the boar instantly jumps off her arms and runs away.

"Whoops! Looks like we did not get to catch something today." She lets out a loud gasp accompanied by a teasing smile.

The young man is speechless and just brushes it off seeing that there is no way he can win an argument against her and suggests that they should leave. "Forget it. That's what you want, anyway. Let's just hope that your father doesn't roast me later on after bringing you deep into the forest."

The young lady happily follows behind him, delighted that he did not even bother to argue. "You are quite submissive today, Sam. It's strange." She says while looking at his face.

He tries to hide his flustered face which clearly shows that he likes getting praised by her, but she persistently tries to get in the way as he turns in every direction to avoid her gaze.

"What are you doing? Why are you trying to avoid me?" she asks with a suspicious tone. "What do you mean? Avoiding you? Are you serious? What I am trying to avoid is getting into an argument with you. The old men told me that women are always right, so I tend to trust their words, and it turned out right for me." He justifies, but the young woman is not gullible enough to be fooled by his words.

"Is that so~?" her teasing voice made him want to look in her direction but thinking about the consequences the moment she sees his flustered face urged him to ditch the idea. "Don't look, Sam. No matter how adorable her voice is, you should not give in."

Sam is a man that can suppress his desires easily. Back in their village, Sam is known for his will and good virtue among his peers. But because he is not that confident in himself, he is overshadowed by young men braver and more confident than him.

Despite this, Elizabeth likes his company with every chance she gets.

"Let's hurry, Elizabeth. We don't know what lurks within these woods at night."

He grabs her by the hand and sprints out of the forest as fast as they can.

After the victory of the forces of darkness, its influence reaches everything in all the corners of the world. The night becomes dangerous, monsters appeared, and unspeakable terror happens to anyone that is caught in the darkness of the night.

It is the only time that evil reigns supreme, and those that have any light source with them will be safe.

The two reach their town and Elizabeth is immediately scolded by her father for almost getting caught up in the darkness of the forest. They got there right on time before the darkness engulfs the world.

"You troublesome, brat! You always give me a headache!"

Elizabeth can only sit quietly as her father scolds her with words. Sam watches her from afar and makes a playful face to annoy her.

And it works.

She bit her lip and smirked in response.

"Are you listening to me, Elizabeth?" her father asked in an angry tone. "Yes, father! I will not do it again!" she utters in response. "You better be. Next time that you do something like this again, I will lock you inside your room."

Her father then left to get her food since they have already eaten, and they are the only ones that has not eaten yet. Elizabeth turns to Sam who is holding himself from bursting into laughter at her scolding.

"Hmmmp- hmmmp!" his puffy cheeks and the sound that he makes while holding his laughter in make her even more convinced that he finds it amusing.

"He he he he, was it that funny?" she asks out of annoyance. "Not really." He replies while rolling his lips inside his mouth, but the look on his face says otherwise.

As Sam continues to deny that fact, Elizabeth's father arrives and hands the two their supper. "Thanks, mister Zeth."

"Thanks, father."

The two look at each other with fierce gazes saying the same thing at the same time, her father shakes his head disappointingly, signifying that this is not the only time that this happened.

"Stop it, you two. You're like cats and dogs, but you get along well. Are you both crazy? And besides, I heard a certain someone let go of a potential meal for tonight. Giving Sam his meal is the least I can do to reward his effort." Her father says with a sharp gaze aimed at her.

His words pierce straight to her soul, she is aware that her father is aware of what she had done regardless of whether Sam informed him or not.

"If you plan to come hunting next time, Elizabeth. Do not get in the way of the hunters. It is the only way our people can fill their stomachs. Especially in these dark ages, we cannot afford to get hungry, we do not know when those bastards will come and appear in our village."

His father's voice suddenly turned serious the moment he mentions the reign of darkness, they are reminded how dangerous of a life they are living without any support from the surviving Beacons.

Elizabeth's father has been the village chief at an early age. When he was just about 15 years old, he witnessed a Beacon being killed by Scythes before his very eyes.

Scythes are the only ones that can tread in the presence of light, compared to the monsters and demons that their powers can summon, solely the Scythes have the privilege to trample the light.

SCREEE! HHRRRRRT! HOWWLLLL!

And on that moment, the monsters that only come out during the night made growling sounds that can be heard in the village.

Children run to their parent's embrace as they cover their ears in fear. Whilst the adults just shake it off, it has become a normal occurrence that they are not bothered by it anymore.

"It has started, go back to your houses everyone. It's time to rest." Old man Zeth ordered.

When everyone is about to head inside their homes, they heard a disturbing sound coming towards the entrance of the village and a silhouette of a man can be seen limping from afar.

They all stare in confusion and fear as the figure slowly comes into view, a man in fine clothes and covered in wounds appear.

"Hel-p."

THUD!

They all watch in silence as he falls unconscious and hits the ground.

"Where in the world did he came from?"
