Chapter 4 - A new start

"What the-." A flying metal plate flew and smashed into a black car.

A young woman who was driving the car was quick enough to push a passenger beside her away from the impact of the plate.

"Izar!" The man was shoved towards the window and saw the plate cut her left arm before his head smacked on the window and got knocked out.

"Fuckk!!" She roared as she stomped on the break, grinding her teeth from the pain of the impact.

She stirred the wheel into a nearby wall, praying the car would stop before it crashed. She doesn't want anyone to suffer from the sudden break, but there was someone else in the car who she hopes will be fine.

Before she could find out, she passed out from the pain caused by her broken arm. The seat belt prevented her from hitting her head on the wheel, but that was all it could help at this point.

Beep, beep, beep

The man slowly opened his eyes, his head wrapped in bandages with a bruise on his eye. A ventilator mask covering his face, with every breath he took, the mask would fog up.

There was nothing in his mind, as he just stared at the ceiling like he just took a long good nap.

It was peaceful with no thoughts.

Click

A nurse walked in, pushing some kind of machine, and saw him awake and staring right back at him. She calmly walked towards him and pressed a button near his bed, and went on to the other patients in the room.

The simple peaceful moment was now gone, and many thoughts rushed to his mind. With the first being.

"What happened?" He muttered, but his voice was drowned by the ventilator beside him. Not that there was anyone in the room to hear either.

He tried recalling what happened, but he only remembered having his head knocked out.

Soon, a few nurses entered, followed by a doctor. The doctor held a clipboard, and the nurses pushed some kind of machine around.

After pulling the curtain around his bed, the nurses ran a few tests on him, and after that, the doctor walked towards the man sitting. The doctor had white hair covering his forehead and winkles that symbolises his age more apparently.

"Your name is Ray Ong, is that right?" The doctor asked, clicking on his pen.

"Mm." He nodded, "That's me."

"Do you have any family members you wish to contact in case of any emergency?" That question left only a deafening silence, causing the doctor to cough, "Sir?"

Ray slowly shook his head, leading the doctor to ask other questions about himself.

Finally reaching the end, the doctor asked, "Do you remember what you were here for?"

He concentrated, frowning his brows and trying to remember. He felt a headache as the last scene before he passed out came to mind.

Ray's eyes widened in horror, "Is Izar okay?! Her arm!" The heart reading machine started beating faster when he asked that.

"The woman that was with you during the crash?" The doctor confirmed, causing him to nod, "She's all right now."

Ray sighed from a breath of relief, "Glad she's alright."

"Why?" The doctor looked up from the board, "You didn't like her left?"

Ray frowned, "Wait.. are you saying she lost her left side.. so she's.. all. Right?"

"Yep."

"What the fuck why would you say it like that?!" He would've punched the doctor if he could, but he was still strapped a few wires from the machine.

"What should I have said? She lost her left side?" He shrugged.

"No shit?" Ray slammed the bed railing.

"I graduated with a medical degree, not a speech degree." The doctor clip the pen on the board, "I suggest you to calm down now, being so agitated isn't doing any good to you. And be more quiet, this isn't a private room."

Ray didn't reply and just fell back down, "Agh!" He held his chest, feeling like a train hit him.

"Don't forget, You're injured." With that, the doctor left the room, leaving Ray by himself.

Ray sighed, facing the ceiling.

"The medical bill.." He covered his eyes with his left hand, "Damn glad I brought a travel insurance.."

"Hey," He heard from beside him, glancing at it, "What are you in for?" The voice sounded rather young and blubbery.

With nothing else to do, he decided to answer, "Car crashed, you?"

"I'm so sorry you had to suffer that, was your car alright?" That last word made him a little irritated.

"It was a friend's car." He sighed, "A loose sign fell and flew towards us."

"I'm so sorry you had to go through that, I hope you will get compensation for what you have suffered." The other person sounded genuine, "It's a miracle that you are still alive!"

Ray stared at the ceiling, unsure of how to reply.

"It's like you've been given a second chance, a second chance at life."
