Leila does not start the car immediately. Her hands lay on the steering wheel and her gaze lands on the man who is still trying to make out what she was staring at.
Her lips curve up in a sinister smile. She noticed his presence the moment she drove into the street leading to her house. Fortunately, this was her territory and she knew how to make things work in her favour.
She enjoys the confusion evident in his eyes despite his face being covered. Leila starts the engine, turns around in one go and drives off the land mass.
After a twenty-minute drive, she gets to an isolated park and stops in front of it. A lady holding a tote bag and dressed in a blue nursing uniform spots the car, looks around before approaching.
Leila rolls down the passenger's window a little for both of them to see themselves as the glasses are tinted, then the lady opens the door and hops into the car while Leila shuts the window.
The lady reaches out into her bag and brings out a file, handing it over to Leila. She scans through the document in it.
"He is in a nursing home" the lady stated
"He doesn't look old" Leila stated, staring at the picture of a man in his late forties,
The lady nods. "Yes and no, he has no disability. Though when he was brought in, he wasn't fully functional"
"Meaning?" Leila questioned, still reading through the document in hand
"People said he was in some state of shock that gave him away to the stroke and he was in a wheelchair"
"Is he still in that position?"
"He no longer has a stroke, but he is not mentally okay, and he is still in a wheelchair for reasons best known to him"
"Who brought him in?"
"Not certain. The person used a fake name"
"I thought IDs were always presented"
"Yes, but a fake one was used. A sample is on there" she points to the file in Leila's hands,
Leila flips a page and picks up an ID card. "No passport"
"I tried getting the picture from the nursing home's database, but it was futile. It kept on showing no picture, but I'll keep trying"
Leila nods.
"More information is in the file" the lady adds
"Alright" Leila shuts the file and places it on the back seat
The lady turns to open the door, then pauses, turning back to Leila, "Something weird happened"
Leila glances at her and then returns her gaze to the road before them. "When I showed him a picture of you, he… he cringed and started acting up not wanting to see it" the lady explained
"Anything else?" Leila inquired,
The lady shakes her head, "No"
Leila starts the car. "Keep me posted"
The lady steps down and Leila drives off at full speed. The lady watches the car move out of sight, then she scans the environment before leaving the park.
Leila drives back home and takes the file into the building. On getting into the building, she almost collides with Kane that was pacing up and down the living room.
"Is there a reason why you are smearing dirt all over my living room?" Leila questioned massaging the space between her forehead and nose,
Kane looks down at his feet and the white tiles below his feet. He looks back at the tiles he stepped on earlier, they were stained with mud. His eyes grow wide.
He faces Leila and apologizes, "I'm sorry. I didn't-"
"Clean it up" Leila commanded, not interested in his apology,
Kane is about to leave when Leila speaks, "Why are you here?"
"I'm your bodyguard, miss. When I came in today, you were nowhere to be found, and I had no means to reach you" Kane explained
Leila looks around. "Where is Eleanor?"
"She stepped out, miss. She ordered I find you before she gets back, or I'll be fired" Kane replied
Leila's lips curve up in a smirk. He acts so well as a good servant, but not every act to be different can last long and not everything hidden can remain so forever.
Kane, feeling Leila is accepting him with her smirk, speaks, "Let me clean this up quick"
"Mm" Leila nods and moves to her room
She tosses the file on the bed and plops on the bed beside it. Glancing at the file, she sighs then brushes her hair back with her fingers, crossing her legs. "Hope you did the job with no trace?" she questioned
"Yes" a low voice replies,
She rises and enters the bathroom. After thirty minutes, she steps out, putting on shorts and a crop top with her hair dense. She picks up the file and begins reading while standing.
A knock comes on the door and a voice comes through, "Miss, I'm done with the cleaning" Kane's voice sounded through the door
"You are dismissed. I don't intend to head anywhere else today" Kane hears Leila says from within the room
"Are you certain, miss?" Kane inquired
It was still the early afternoon and a higher probability that she would step out again, so he had to ask. After five minutes of waiting for a reply, he decides to leave.
Leila spends hours standing, and sitting in her study as she reads the file. It had complicated things. Some things were left unanswered or incomplete.
The puzzles were many, and she needed the remaining parts of the puzzle to complete it. She tosses the file on the bed angrily and sighs.
Ding!
A cup appears on top of her bedside drawer. Vapour appears above the cup. Leila walks to the cup and takes it, sipping its content; hot tea,
She takes a seat on the bed, taking another sip from the cup.
Ring! Ring! Ring!
Her phone rings, taking her out of her thoughts. She picks up but says nothing.
"Ma, the President of Reeds is at your reception" Sharon on the other end informs
"Tell him I'm not available today, and he should learn to make appointments" and she ends the call
