Once one, two, three people began breaking away from the mob and moving toward the other side of town, it didn't take long before people realized if they were going to aim for the two-for-one deal, they would have to be quick. They could either dawdle and wait until everyone else got their pol and bought fruit, or they could make a rapt decision and rush toward the purgatory facilities to try and take the lead.
Most people instinctively realized that they couldn't fight their desire for more delicious food. But they also couldn't fight Micah and his goons. So, their only option was to do as Micah had said.
Some found it a pretty bleak situation and didn't appreciate how Micah had done things. But when they thought about it, they realized how merciful Micah had been. Unlike what Larry had claimed, Micah had all the right to do whatever he wished with his fruit. It was his, after all.
