"What?" she mumbled, trying to sound casual, but Allen could tell she was just as on edge as he was.
Allen gave her a dry smile. "Oh, you know, just waiting for the inevitable circus. I hope you know that Dad isn't going to let this slide," he said, his tone sharper than he intended.
Emma rolled her eyes, though she looked more uneasy than defiant. "Yeah, yeah, I know. It was worth it, though, right? I mean, come on—when else would I have a chance to mess with you like that?" she replied, trying to inject some humor but clearly failing to cover her nerves.
