Chapter 22 - The hunt

When they heard the plan, Ed, Eclair, and Sabrina thought that Sigma had lost his mind. They looked at each other, trying to understand what he was planning, but in the end, Sigma himself had to teach him what he wanted.

"I just want to be sure that I will have a clear view of the enemies, and if we stay clustered together, they will always use magic to get in our way all at once," Sigma explained. "I will also be able to stop the ones using magic as soon as possible, and I will be able to attack nonstop for a while."

"I guess I understand where you are coming from… if they don't see you at first, they will also be caught off guard," Ed said while nodding. "Well, let's try it out."

The group approached the camp of hyenas on their right side by using one of the massive rocks as a cover. Eventually, they tied the horses to a smaller rock, and then Sigma climbed the taller one and then nodded toward the others.

When Ed, Eclair, and Sabrina began to pass by the massive rock, the hyenas noticed them and began to dash. Once they were fifty meters away, Sigma emerged from the top of the rock and then aimed before firing two arrows at the same time. When Sigma killed the first beast, he was already aiming the next par of arrows…

The beasts looked around for him after slowing down, but another one fell before they could find him. At the same time, Sabrina had the chance to wound several monsters with her Fireballs. Sigma also used the chance to attack the heads of other monsters, only one head per enemy since Ed began to run toward them, and he would have an easier time killing them.

The pain caused by the attacks dulled the strength and speed of the beasts, so Ed began to swing his sword wildly and finished off the enemies with ease. Around the same time, the backline finished wounding at least one head of all enemies.

Thanks to that, Sigma and Sabrina had an easy time aiming and finishing off the remaining beasts. While Sigma used a bit more mana, at least no one got hurt.

"Well, this was a pretty good result if I dare say…" Ed said once Sigma slipped down the rock. "Few people can hit the enemies from such a distance, but I guess snipers can really make a difference."

Now that Sigma thought about it while adding the angle and the distance in a straight line, he hit the enemies with pinpoint precision while they were over fifty meters away. He didn't notice that his aim was that good… but the fact that Double Shot could fly and hit the target almost instantly helped a lot.

The group headed in the other direction and obtained the same result in the next fight. After that, they checked the surroundings for more enemies, but it seemed that they would be fine. Those two groups of double-headed hyenas were the only ones nearby for some reason.

"Against flying enemies, I am almost useless," Ed declared when they began to prepare to fight against the Verdiris. "The only thing I can do is to protect Eclair and Sabrina."

"I don't think that we will need you fighting for a while. The enemies seem to be flying in smaller groups, after all," Sigma said while looking in the distance. "I guess we should focus on gaining terrain from them over time and then gain combat experience as well for today."

The other three nodded. They had a ten-day journey ahead of them, so they didn't have to rush ahead in that situation. They waited for Sigma's opinion on the matter, but he looked calmer than they expected.

Regardless, they saw those massive birds approaching once the group was five hundred meters from the first group of monsters. Thanks to that, Sigma had the chance to check them. They were like ten meters tall and five wide when their wings were spread… they had a pointy and triangular beak, and the entirety of their bodies was covered in thick-looking feathers. Those made them look way tougher than they were supposed to be, and Sigma could tell that they were way thinner in reality. Still, their flying speed was something…

Sigma confirmed what he already knew… those things sure were soft, and maybe he couldn't say that since it was even frailer. Regardless, around eight of them approached to face them, and Sigma could see several of them in the distance, not moving.

"Eclair, take the reins of the horses," Ed declared once he jumped from his battle horse.

Sigma did the same and quickly activated Power Shot. The beasts could cover that entire distance in ten seconds, but they were being reckless enough to cross while flying in a straight line. Thanks to that, Sigma had the chance to snipe one of them when it was one hundred meters away. The arrow flew insanely fast and pierced the head of the beast, making it fall after letting out a small squeak.

[You got 80 experience points.]

Sigma grinned... The hunt will be very fun there.
