Chapter 53 - Countdown

Since the skeletons stopped moving, Sigma could find an angle where he could hit several of them at a time as long as he was high enough. So, with that in mind, Sigma and Sabrina climbed a tree, and then she slowly got rid of the snow on the path of his aim.

"This is a bit time-consuming… are you sure that it is a good idea?" Sabrina asked.

"Actually, no… not if I do everything by myself," Sigma replied. "If the monsters find us as soon as possible, you can join me and attack them. If not, you can just wait until that happens."

"If that is the case, why don't we ask the others to help us?" Sabrina asked. "If they see a lot of people, the monsters will think that it is Lucy's group who is back, but if they don't, they won't act like usual. Besides, I want to confirm if they are being controlled or not."

There was also the fact that Sigma wanted to get more experience faster to level up and learn Mana Regeneration, but explaining that would be too hard.

Once their preparations were over, Sigma pointed his bow at one enemy. Still, he could tell that if he put enough energy into it, the arrow would pierce three others. Three enemies will be killed in a fraction of a second, so the other skeletons will have a hard time finding them since they are on the left side of the area and the enemies are three hundred meters on the right side.

After charging Power Shot for fifteen seconds, Sigma fired, and practically all at once, three skeletons were killed. The other creatures moved and began to look for them, but they were too far away to find them.

Sigma nocked another arrow and then Activated Power Shot and waited until several of the monsters were aligned. This time, he waited for twenty seconds, and the arrow pierced five enemies and then created a blast that pushed away several others to the sides.

The creatures looked around in confusion and couldn't tell where the attack came from. Initially, thirty came to check the area, but forty more approached.

"They aren't being controlled… Lucy must have made a mistake, or maybe they can be controlled, and they can act by themselves in some situations," Sigma muttered, knocking another arrow.

"They don't want to break all of their lines of defense… they are coming in small groups because they think that we might be trying to be a diversion while others invade their base," Sabrina whispered. "... Attack them again, and this time try to use almost all of your might. To the point that it will reveal our position."

"Why should I do that?" Sigma furrowed his eyebrows.

"I am looking at the other areas where the skeletons are guarding, and it doesn't seem that they are paying attention to us," Sabrina said. "My guess is only those summoned by the same demon are getting involved in the search."

That made sense… if Sigma attacks those, there is a chance that the others won't get involved if he kills them all fast enough. That was unlikely given the conditions, but Sabrina was nearby to offer him support if necessary, so he decided to try.

Sigma fired an arrow after charging for forty seconds, and it consumed six hundred points of stamina. The arrow flew so fast that it pierced through several enemies before the blast made several skeletons spin in the air for quite a while.

Sigma used that chance to fire multiple arrows at them and began to kill them left and right. Still, when twenty were lasting, they found him and began to fire ice spears toward him while flying in his direction.

"The others are still standing without moving!" Sabrina said, and then she fired several Fireballs to block the ice spears.

She didn't hold back on the use of mana, so Sabrina blocked them all while Sigma finished the job. After ten more were killed, they surrounded the tree and began to spam their spells.

Sigma jumped away from the tree and landed on the snow with Sabrina on his shoulder before sliding on the snow for a short while.

"Melt the snow around us and keep your mouth and nose closed!" Sigma ordered.

Sabrina didn't try to argue. She just did that. Used a Fireball to melt the snow around, and then a curtain of steam surrounded them. The ice skeletons kept firing their ice spears, but then Sigma appeared on the side of the steam cloud while sliding again. Still, this time, Sigma had his bow and numerous arrows in them and attacked the beasts. When they noticed what was happening, they lost five more of their allies with arrows in their heads.

For some reason, the remaining five tried to run away while using ice walls to protect themselves. Still, Sigma used Power Shot in each of his arrows and destroyed the walls and the enemies before they could get far away from his range.

"It looks like the others are ignoring the fight… that really confirms the thing about how they operate in groups according to whom summoned them," Sabrina said and then sighed in relief since she still wasn't so certain of what she said earlier.

"Well, let's take a break… by my count, I guess we dealt with two hundred of them already," Sigma said while looking around. "We just have to deal with three hundred more nightfalls."
