Chapter 31 - Tragedy

The woman bowed deeply with her shaky body and pleaded desperately, "I-i have nowhere to go back to. Please, take me and my daughter in as servants. We will not become a burden to you. We can read and write… Please…" The woman pleaded with tearful eyes as she clasped her hands and prayed. 

"How in the world did you get here? Where is your home? Which family do you belong to?" Li Yan asked. 

The woman averted her gaze and prostrated herself to the ground as she kowtowed and said changing the topic, "I beg you! Please! My daughter is still young. We don't have a home to go back to anymore. I beg you! Take her in at least!"

Hearing this response, Li Yan realized that perhaps the woman did not want to talk about her origins. It seemed from her eyes that it had become nothing but a painful memory for her.
