Starting training, from no experience fighting whatsoever, with battle axes was a… rather unique choice. It is not foolish, to say the least. To each their own.
Both battle axes and swords had reasonable advantages and disadvantages. Everything falls into the situation you find yourself in. In fact, from what Zenon has seen in the very few movies he watched, axes tend to be devastating.
Battle axes were generally heavier and thus could deal a more powerful blow than swords. In case the Layer Beast had sturdy armor, this weapon was the go-to choice.
Cleaving, as opposed to the sword, supposes no problem with such a tenacious weapon. You could even chain a slash attack with a thrust and completely destroy your opponent's guard!
