Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Inn

Mavis, who was sleeping, had awakened from a deep, dreamless slumber.

Looking around, she realized that Jaxx wasn't there.

"Jaxx?" Mavis called out.

There was no answer.

Mavis got up and walked out from underneath the ledge.

She looked around.

"Jaxx?" Mavis called again.

When there was no response from Jaxx, Mavis became concerned.

She knew Jaxx wouldn't leave like this, leaving her alone and not telling her.

Mavis felt very frightened and anxious.

She hoped Jaxx hadn't gotten hurt; that he didn't just run off and leave her by herself.

Mavis decided to go and look for him.

As she walked, she called Jaxx once more.

Mavis began to feel very frightened.

She had the sense that someone was following her.

As she paused and stood there, she looked around her.

When she didn't see anyone, she felt a little better. However, she was still sure she was being watched.

She started walking again.

Then, suddenly, there was a loud snap of a branch.

It frightened her so much that she stopped and looked around.

Mavis heard heavy footsteps trampling the dry leaves, and she knew that it wasn't Jaxx.

Mavis ran away as quickly as her feet could carry her.

She was terrified, and wanted to distance herself from what was pursuing her.

As Mavis ran away, someone was indeed lurking in the shadows, watching.

In fact, he had been watching Mavis and Jaxx since they walked into the woods.

His name was Rem.

He was from the town ahead, Transylvania.

Mavis ran, her heart pounding in her chest.

She was frightened and didn't want to be hurt. While she was running away, Jaxx was walking back to inform Mavis about Transylvania.

Mavis was too terrified to pay mind to where she was running, due to panic, and she wound up shooting straight into Jaxx' arms.

When she ran into Jaxx, he wondered what had caused Mavis to be so frightened that she would bolt into his arms like that.

Mavis realized that she had run into Jaxx, she was overjoyed.

She clung to him tightly, trembling in his arms. She was elated to have found him, but she was still terrified that someone was stalking her.

As Jaxx held onto Mavis, he began to worry about her.

She seemed very spooked.

He noticed that she looked like she was running away from something or someone.

"Mavis, what's wrong?" Jaxx inquired while holding her.

"I...I woke up and you were gone," Mavis started to cry.

"I went searching for you.

I think that someone was following me, Jaxx," Mavis explained as she clung Jaxx tightly, her heart still racing.

As Jaxx looked around while holding Mavis safely in his arms to calm her down, he didn't see anyone.

However, just because he didn't see anyone, didn't mean that he didn't believe her.

It wasn't like Mavis to get frightened for no reason.

He held her tightly to calm her down, running his fingers through her soft hair.

He wanted her to feel safe.

"Why did you leave?" Mavis asked, scared still.

"I just wanted to look around a little, and I didn't want to wake you up.

I assumed that I'd be back before you woke up," answered Jaxx.

As Jaxx let go of Mavis and looked at her with concern, he could see that she was anxious.

Jaxx wrapped his arms back around Mavis and kissed her head sweetly, wanting her to know she was safe now.

"Don't worry, I wouldn't let anyone hurt you.

I promise," Jaxx insisted as he looked down at Mavis.

He hadn't realized how beautiful she was before now.

Mavis brushed her hand against his and blushed a deep shade of red.

"So, why were you out here anyway?" Mavis asked.

"I was out, looking around, and I found something," said Jaxx.

"What'd you find?" Mavis wondered curiously.

"I found a town up ahead," said Jaxx.

"Really?" said Mavis.

Mavis smiled and bit her lip as she looked up at Jaxx.

"Yeah.

I was thinking that if you wanted to, We could stay there for a while." said Jaxx.

He could see the excitement growing on Mavis' beautiful, pale face.

"I would love to stay there, it'd be a nice change from the woods," Mavis said as she grinned.

Jaxx took Mavis' hand in his, it was soft and cold, after all; she was a vampire like him.

Mavis and Jaxx walked hand in hand into Transylvania.

They were amazed by the sights and sounds. Jaxx hadn't been in a town since he had left Bucharest many years ago.

He had missed it.

There were lots of people there, wandering the streets.

They were going about their business, like normal, everyday people.

Mavis and him seemed to fit right in, because no one made any remarks about them or the bite marks that were poorly hidden on their neck.

A little further into town, they came across a quaint little Inn.

"Hey Mavis, do you want to check it out?" Jaxx looked at Mavis, she had a look of wonder twinkling in her hazel eyes.

"Can we? Please?" She got excited.

It was nice to see her excited for a change, Jaxx thought to himself.

When they walked into the Inn, there were many people sitting at tables and talking to each other. Some of them were enjoying what Jaxx suspected to be a pint of ale, however, though he didn't know it; it wasn't ale in their mugs, but blood.

Upstairs, there were rooms where most of the people who were downstairs would stay when they weren't bantering about and socializing with one another.

Jaxx and Mavis walked over to an empty table and sat down beside one another.

While they were sitting there, a girl watched them from across the room.

Her name was Ellena.

Ellena watched them because she noticed that she had never seen the curious couple before. While Ellena watched Jaxx and Mavis, Rem walked into the Inn.

He already knew that Jaxx and Mavis were there; he had followed their tracks to the Inn.

As Rem walked past Jaxx and Mavis, he saw Ellena.

In order to not seem suspicious, he walked over to her.

"Watching the Vampires, are you?" said Rem dryly as he stood in front of the table where Ellena was sitting.

"Rem, everyone's a Vampire." Ellena remarked with irritation in her voice.

"Yeah, I know that, but, I know for a fact that those two are different," said Rem.

"How do you know that?" Ellena asked.

"I've been following them around in the woods before they came into town.

Trust me when I say, they are different," said Rem glaring at Jaxx.

"Well, if they are different, they can't be bad if they're here," said Ellena.

"Yeah, right! They probably came here to –" Rem paused angrily.

"To what?" said Ellena.
