Chapter 157 - The Vast World

In the movie The Truman Show, ever since Levi took over, someone told Levi that this is a work satirizing the media, and if it is released rashly, it will only offend the media.

But in Levi's view, the key to what message the movie wants to convey lies in how the movie is shaped. Whether a movie is mainly ironic or inspirational depends on the way it is shot. Forrest Gump can successfully turn allegory into inspiration; why can't he?

And in this movie, he also made a lot of changes. He cut out a lot of the audience watching. He relied on the camera to guide the sympathy and surprise of the audience in front of the screen.

The director and film crew in the movie were not maliciously vilified by Levi. They didn't talk about making money, and they didn't want to make Truman's bedroom sex scene public for money. These were obviously just to satirize the media, and Levi didn't keep it.

Under his lens, the identity of the director is the embodiment of fate: for ordinary people, the God of fate manipulates people's fate; for Truman, the director manipulates his fate. The existence of the director is only for intuitive expression.

In this movie, Truman's personal emotional changes, as well as his transition from compromise to investigation to seemingly docile but actually thinking about escaping, are magnified by Levi.

In Levi's view, this part is the movie's focus. Irony in the early stage and inspiration in the later stage. That's the whole point of the movie.

Levi does not exaggerate the guiding role of the media. Instead, with the help of the director's mouth, the manipulation of the media is equated with the manipulation of God, which arouses more substitution and thinking from the audience.

Compared with satirizing the media, Levi hopes the audience will think more about themselves. And in this way, when Truman sails away at this turning point in the movie, it will naturally arouse more investment from the audience.

In the subject matter of realism, reality is always cruel. And personal pursuits are always idealized. Shooting this kind of movie, if more attention is paid to social reality, it is mainly satire. If more personal efforts are pursued, it is primarily inspirational.

A director should know how to use his own camera. He doesn't have to worry about telling a bad story as long as the camera can be used well.

There are too many people who look forward to their dreams in life. But there is no strength to pursue it. Of course, they get excited when they see someone who dares to chase their dreams.

The director was obviously unprepared for Truman's departure: because Truman was afraid of water, he neglected his precautions early on, and the photography of the lighthouse was no longer available. Naturally, he didn't do anything to the sailboat. The use of a vehicle exceeded his expectations.

Seeing that Truman wanted to escape, he had only one idea: set up a man-made storm and try to prevent Truman from leaving.

If you want to chase your dreams, he can make trouble: How many dreams stop in the face of setbacks? How can it be smooth sailing for someone who wants to rebel against fate?

The music was excited, and the small sailboat swayed in the wind and waves, almost capsizing several times. But Truman has always held on to the sailboat tightly and never considered turning around. He firmly wanted to leave this place, and the wind and waves could not stop him.

"If you want to stop me, you can only kill me!"

Standing on the sailboat, Truman roared loudly toward the sky. He doesn't know who is manipulating his life, but he knows they want to stop him from pursuing his dreams. However, what is a setback like a storm in the face of a person's dream?

What can stop a determined person from chasing his dreams besides death?

"Stop it; it's too dangerous."

The director reluctantly let the storm stop: Difficulties can hinder a person's many efforts but can't stop a person's dream.

Levi didn't choose to ask the director to say something similar to "It doesn't matter if he kills him." Rather than discrediting the media, he hopes that director Christopher will appear in a "God" role in a true sense that has nothing to do with love or hate. Such a role is more conducive to his movie.

The storm stopped, and Truman, standing on the sailboat again, looked at the clear sky after the rain and showed a smile with mixed feelings: It turns out that this is their method. Not as big as he thought.

They can set off a storm and make him suffer setbacks. As long as one can work hard and persevere, as long as one is not discouraged, one will always have a moment when the clouds will open, the moon will shine, and one will always see the blue sky after the rain.

What really stops you is only your own heart. As long as you make up your mind, nothing can stop you.

He sat down on the boat, and the boat was drifting forward. Under the blue sky, a light boat was rippling. Under the sea and sky, the only sight was Truman's boat. This kind of beauty is ultimately a portrayal of Truman's mood after the rain, and it also highlights a very important thing: for those who chase their dreams, the most important thing is to persist in themselves.

And at this moment, the boat also came to the end of the studio. The boat pierced the blue curtain, and Truman walked over in surprise. He didn't expect the blue sky and white clouds he saw also to be fake. He beat the curtain hard - it turned out that his life had always been in such a false environment. It also made Truman realize once again how ridiculous his life is.

Fortunately, he has come out.

Turning around, he walked along the wall and soon found the staircase leading to the outside world. He walked up the stairs and pushed open the door that said exit, and at this moment, Christopher's voice sounded again.

"Truman."

Through the thick clouds, his voice spread down with the sunlight. Behind the clouds, he is like an omnipotent God, watching Truman's life and talking to Truman.

"Who are you?"

"Creator, I created your world."

"Then who am I?"

"You are the core of my world; you are the master of this world."

"So, everything is fake. The whole world is fake?"

"No, Truman, nothing is fake. The outside world is just as fake and full of lies as Seahaven Island, and there will still be many people who lie to you. At least you don't have to worry about getting hurt in this world, but outside... Truman, you belong here; the outside world is not worth yearning for. Here your life is perfect; you like it here."

"You didn't put a camera in my head!" Truman raised his head.

"You are afraid, you are hesitating, you don't know what the outside world is like." Christopher revealed Truman's mind, "You belong here; you should stay here. No one knows you better than me, not even yourself. Truman, I have seen your whole life and know you best, so stay in my world..."

When all man-made setbacks and sufferings cannot stop you from going out, then the last solution, which is also the most straightforward solution: All of this may as well point out directly that what Christopher wants is no longer to hinder Truman with difficulties, but to change Truman's yearning and pursuit of the real world.

The outside world is not necessarily good, and the false world is not necessarily bad. Truman didn't know anything about the outside world, so, of course, he would be afraid to leave here - since he was afraid, why couldn't he stay?

The most challenging thing for a man to defeat is not God, not nature, not the enemy, but himself. After all the methods fail, it is easiest to directly persuade the other party.

Truman turned around slowly, raised his head, stared at God, and then smiled, "Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!"

The smile on the director's face froze, he heard Truman mention this sentence every day, but he never thought that this sentence would become a reality one day.

Truman is right, he can install a camera anywhere, but he cannot install a camera in Truman's head. He cannot manipulate other people's thoughts.

The outside world may indeed be dangerous and sad, but when a person has the courage to question his own life and pursue his true love, how can he not have the courage to step into a wider world?

This greeting used to be a mockery of Truman's life, but now it has become a mockery of the director. Truman's courage and pursuit completely defeated the director.

Truman turned around and strode out of the studio. His white sweater disappeared into the darkness, and he chose to leave.

The enthusiastic music came again, and at this point, the movie was finally over.

And there was also a lot of applause in the movie theater: they applauded for Truman's choice and this movie!

[A/N: Because I want to talk about specific plot changes, the introduction of this movie is relatively long.]
