Chapter 1 - Prologue: Casting the Shadows

An eerie, sullen darkness slowly crept its way through the land, choking out the light as it swept in. The wind lost all momentum as the air grew stagnant; the temperature dropped a couple of degrees as everything began to settle. In a single moment, the world stood still, as if it were in a trance. It was peculiar how the night descended into a deafening blackness, yet not a soul paid any mind to it.

Just as silent as the night, a group of shadow-like figures slithered beyond the city walls and into the streets of Vellenfar. Moving quickly with lethal precision, the mysterious men began mapping out the Templar's movement, the citizen's entrances to their homes and the patterns of life within the city. Their silvery purple eyes glowing with a nefarious energy, their skin a pale white greyish color giving off an unnatural hue as the moonlight shines against it. Their canine teeth were pointed and sharpened for hunting; their nails elongated into claw-like daggers to slice through their prey with ease. This malicious band of monsters only had one thing on their mind; kill.

As the night stretched on a group of Templars gathered in the heart of the city, warming their cold hands and faces by the open fire in one of the warming stations. Chatter filled the empty space as they conversed casually.

"God Damn those Sentallen, thanks to them I have to stand four watches just this week alone! When is a man going to get his rest?" A young knight of the Templar grumbled.

"You are telling me; I have to stand these extra watches and still train the squires in the mornings." Another griped in agreeance. The Templars continued their grumblings and chatter when suddenly, a cold breeze strong enough to move the flames of the fire kicked up. The knights looked around curious, hands on their weapons ready for a fight.

A mysterious figure darted out from the shadows and lunged at the closest knight, razor sharp claws slicing the young man's throat clean through. The monster slipped out of the shadows just long enough for the Templars to see its features, most stifled their cries of terror and disgust. Before the other Templars could react, more of the mystery creatures sprang out and began clawing and ripping at their flesh. Blood gushed and flowed like a river onto the cold stone pavement, staining the once grey walkway a sickening shade of crimson. The creatures' eyes bore into every one of their victims, a grotesque smile flashed across one who was holding the knight who cursed the watches by the throat. A disgusting gurgling laugh bubbled in the creature's throat as he brought the knight's face closer to his.

"The Sentallen send their regards." The creature spat at the Templar before plunging his wicked sharp claws into his abdomen, ripping out flesh and some organs with it, rendering the man unable to even scream. He tossed the knight's limp, lifeless body onto the ground as the creatures disemboweled the remaining Templars before they all disappeared back into the shadows.
