For the first time in his entire life, Carter Wilford felt helpless despite being bullied. Bella's sudden and unceremonious departure upset and angered him, but he could not take it out on his wife. He couldn't be rude to Bella. Carter has to admit to himself that this time he's actually brought to his knees by a woman who, unfortunately, doesn't share his feelings.
Alex Ross, his father-in-law, called him several times to ask what Carter was going to do. Alex expects Carter to go to Saco to catch up with Bella and bring her back to New York, willingly or by force.
