Chapter 5 - Chaotic Spiritual Root

Bai Hu asked a few questions about the lectures, his spiritual roots, and about his Master, Zhong Xian. He answered everything patiently and it soon got dark. Bai Hu walked back with an enlightened feeling.

Firstly, there was no one at the lecturing platform because Zhong Xian didn't bother to teach anything. Elders would regularly rotate this job and whenever youths saw Zhong Xian, they would walk back with an annoyed expression.

Second, he said that Bai Hu's spiritual roots were called Chaotic Spiritual Roots. He had read a bit about it from an ancient tome and would go back to get it for Bai Hu.

Thirdly, Zhong Xian said that since he had lightning and wind in his spiritual roots, trying to sense qi here would bear no fruit even if he stayed for a century. Thus, he would bring him to a suitable environment so he can quickly begin cultivating.

He entered his room and an hour later, a book flew through his window and landed next to him.

Instead of the original tome, Zhong Xian had translated it so that Bai Hu would be able to read it. He picked up the book and opened it to the first page. The smell of fresh paper wafted up his nostrils.

There were 3 tomes that Zhong Xian had put into this one book. There were even notes and time estimates from Zhong Xian to help Bai Hu have an easier time.

The first part was an explanation of what the Chaotic Spiritual Root was. According to the book, there are always slight traces of chaotic qi in the air. This is qi that had existed since ancient times and the material that made up everything. When a being is born, minute traces of this qi will enter the baby's body. If enough gathers, a spiritual root will form.

However, larger amounts of this chaotic qi can cause mutations in the spiritual root. This is how roots like lightning, wind, and ice are formed. These are mutated spiritual roots comparable to Heavenly Spiritual Roots.

A Chaotic Spiritual Root forms when an extreme amount of chaotic qi enters the body of one with a 5 element spiritual root. This will usually cause 1 of the attributes to mutate and become something else.

Those with Chaotic Spiritual Roots won't all be the same as some will have greater progress due to the different mutations in their spiritual roots.

The next part is a story about a man with a Chaotic Spiritual Root. According to Zhong Xian, this happened around 100,000 years ago and the man in the story is most definitely dead. His fire attribute had mutated to become a rare type of purple flames and that gave him an edge against those with similar cultivation bases. He had managed to reach the peak of Nascent Soul realm and was unheard of ever since.

Lastly, there was a legend of a woman whose water attribute had mutated into an ice attribute. Using this rare spiritual root, she rose through the realms and according to the ancients, had even managed to ascend to the Immortal Realm, if it even exists.

A few other texts mention that not all mutations are good. There is said to have been an instance when one individual had a Chaotic Spiritual Root but got a bad mutation. Their wood attribute mutated into a rare leech type spiritual root which drained their vitality.

Bai Hu let out a deep breath as he shut the book. He had a lightning and wind attribute in place of water and wood. Both are rare spiritual root attributes and complement his other attributes which means he shouldn't have any problems.

Meanwhile, Zhong Xian arrived at a pagoda in the restricted zone reserved for elders. He entered to find a group consisting of middle aged and elderly people had gathered.

He strode in, talking long sips from his wine gourd, and plopped down on a chair. Everyone saw his audacious behavior but didn't comment on it. A few even nodded at him in acknowledgment, after all, Zhong Xian is the one who they all call "The Librarian" and even some with higher cultivation bases acknowledged him.

"Elder Xian! What brings you here today?"

A white haired old man walked over to greet Zhong Xian. This is the head elder in charge of all elders under the Grand Elders.

"Head Elder Ming! I didn't come here for much besides finding Elder Shui for a quick talk"

"Very well, it's quite rare to see you around here and I think you should visit more often"

"Humph! Old geezer, don't think I don't know that you simply want to drink quality wine"

The surrounding elders laughed and began to make small talk. A while later, Elder Shui showed up and Zhong Xian quickly pulled him aside without letting him refuse.

Once they were a distance away, Elder Shui spoke up in an annoyed tone, "What is it you want Librarian?"

"Hehehe," Zhong Xian put his arm around Elder Shui, "Come now, why so cold? I merely want to make something clear"

His eyes narrowed "Make something clear?"

Zhong Xian grinned "That brat you registered is now my disciple"

For a moment Elder Shui didn't react and was still trying to figure out what Zhong Xian meant, but after a moment of thinking, it struck him.

"You made Bai Hu into your disciple?!?"

This made him go into a frenzy as he grabbed Zhong Xian's collar and shook him up and down.

"What the fuck is wrong with you! He's off limits! Off limits I said!"

He started going on and on about how Bai Hu was off limits and that the Grand Elders specifically told him to keep an eye on him. When he finally stopped ranting, he looked down to see Zhong Xian frothing in the mouth.

"... Sigh"

He had forgotten that Zhong Xian's cultivation base was lower than his and went a bit overboard. Grumbling in annoyance, he forced a pill down his mouth and threw him on a bench before walking away.

"Sigh"

He sighed again while massaging his temples.

"How will I report this to the Grand Elders?"
