Chapter 16 - Sidewalk fight

Akilah

Akilah was trying on her dress. She pulled the straps over her shoulders and stepped out of the over done dressing room. "So?" She said, patting her skirt.

"Wow." Mathew said, grinning like a Cheshire Cat. He stood up and twirled Akilah around. "You look stunning." He whispered into her ear. Elijah had refused to come with her and just said something along the lines of: it'll be worth it. She felt bad for not insisting he come but she still had Mathew. Akilah paid and left the shop.

As the were walking down the sidewalk they saw Jack and Fred walking towards them. Akilah planned to ignore them but Mathew had other ideas. He stopped dead and looked at Jack. Akilah felt the devil shudder. Jack was strong and did every form of martial art, but Mathew only played by the rules in chess. If this was a street fight, the odds were even. The boys started walking towards each other.

"We have a problem?" Jack asked as his strides shook the earth. Mathew made a noise that was a cross between a grunt and a laugh.

"Yeah. We have a problem. I may have not spoken to Akilah but I can tell when her heart breaks. She's too pure fro you." Mathew and Jack were circling each other now, like offended British in a pub. The pair of angry males looked at each other before they cut the circle to meet in the middle. Akilah stood with Fred who looked grim. Akilah didn't understand what was about to happen but judging by the other men in the small crowd that had gathered, it was not good. Mathew swung first, but Jack dodged. Then a knee went up into Mathews chin. Another fist, one double punch, a foot and some poor dog. Even a roll of newspaper off the floor was a weapon. Akilah came to her senses and sprung forward. The two were doing cobra positions daring the other to take over punch. Akilah did not get boys.

"Stop! You!" She said pointing at Jack. "Why fight pover me when you had the option to keep me? You," she was now pointing at Mathew, "if you have got blood on my dress I'll kill you myself!" Akilah grabbed Mathew by the collar and dragged him off.

When she was far enough away she pulled Mathew in front of her. Her hands on his shoulders. She sighed. He had a bloody nose and a bruised cheek. Akilah rested her head on his chest. She felt Mathews strong, sturdy hands on her back. When she pulled away she looked up at his eyes. His big amber eyes. "Every time I have an ex, you beat him up. I'm not worth it." Akilah said in his arms.

"Yes, you are. Besides last time you had a boyfriend sold your cat for crack. Your other one, before you say it was once, murdered his side piece because she said you were pretty." Mathew said, disturbingly calm

"He said he was the only one allowed to call me pretty." Akilah said. "He was just insecure."

"HE WAS THIRTEEN!" Mathew shouted. A woman who had listened to the whole thing crossed the street and ran away.

"And?"

"HE WAS TOXIC!" Mathew said.

"I could change him." Akilah said, quietly. She hadn't had a boyfriend in three years. She had to admit that her taste in men was horrible. Akilah loved Mathews brutal responses. Everything about him was perfect. He was such a good friend. Everyone loved him. He hugged her even tighter.

"You couldn't change him anymore than the insane asylum his parents sent him to." He grinned.
