Chapter 16 - Alone (2)

The only reason I followed the group earlier was to unlock the fire affinity. I needed to stay close to Lyra to do so, and since we took quite a long time to go to the shelter, it was easy to unlock it.

And as I knew how to create a shelter as well, I felt like it would be perfect with the fire affinity. Indeed earlier in the day when I formed the ice walls against the wolves, the message that came from the system was the following.

[Would you like to make your shelter here?]

At that time, I didn't think of much, but now that I was alone, I needed to take care of everything myself. So the best way to do so was by creating my own shelter.

And if I were, to be honest, I was a little glad to be alone again. While it would be harder to survive, it was also more comfortable for me. And if possible, I would like for people to not join my shelter.

'I wonder if I'll meet them again.' I thought but quickly dismissed this thought away as there was no point thinking about that. I might have grown fond of Roselle and Julius, but I couldn't stay with them in such conditions.

"Anyway now that I'm alone, I should go back to the lab."

I knew that going back to the lab was a risky move, but I had no other choice. I needed to find out more about the system and the strange messages that kept appearing.

As I walked through the dense forest, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The trees seemed to be closing in on me, and the rustling of leaves made me jump at every sound.

I pushed on, trying to ignore my fear, but the closer I got to the lab, the more I realized that something was wrong. The air grew thick with a strange energy, and the ground shook beneath my feet. Thankfully I had my creature or else I would have peed myself.

I picked up my pace, running toward the lab as fast as I could. When I finally arrived, I saw that the door had been smashed open, and the inside was a mess.

There was still the hobgoblin corpse as well as my fellow scientist, but I felt like someone else came here.

As I knew there was nothing on the ground floor, I quickly went down the stairs. Thankfully though, it seems that there wasn't anything strange in here.

And as such, I started to search every single room for blueprints. It didn't matter what people wanted to do, I needed as many blueprints as possible. Only like this will I be able to survive.

And after rummaging over all the rooms the different floors could offer, I managed to find a lot of blueprints. The first floor of the lab specialized in weaponry, so I knew that it was the greatest floor for me in this situation. The second floor of the company was for all the living stuff, and I found a few things that would help me make my shelter better. The third floor was however completely dead. Nothing could be found there as it seems that the ice-goblins destroyed everything, even the blueprints were torn apart.

As for the fourth and fifth floors, they were both useless. Both floors specialized in finding cures for diseases, and we weren't working with blueprints.

So once I had everything, I started to go up the stairs once again. However, things weren't looking as bright as I hoped.

Indeed another pack of wolves was on the ground floor, eating away the dead bodies.

'Now I have two ways. I either wait for them to go away, or attack them and do my best to kill them.' Unfortunately, the pack was full of 10 grown ice wolves. And I didn't have enough magic energy to craft the new blueprints I found earlier.

I weighed my options carefully, trying to think of a way to get past the pack of wolves without getting hurt. But as time passed, the wolves showed no signs of leaving.

I knew that I couldn't wait forever, so I decided to take a risk and attack the wolves. I took out my fire nano-gun I made earlier in anticipation of this moment.

The wolves noticed me and started to growl, their eyes fixed on me. I could feel my heart racing as I got closer and closer to them.

Suddenly, one of the wolves lunged at me, and I shot a bullet; The bullet struck the wolf's head, killing it instantly before starting to burn down.

The other wolves started to run toward me the moment I killed one of them. However, it was at this moment that all my creatures came in the front.

The nano-dogs attracted their attention while the nano-cats sneak attacked them from behind. As for the nano-praying mantes, they attacked from the front, slowly killing more and more wolves.

I helped them as well but tried to not use many bullets as I will lose my gun quickly otherwise.

And in no time, I managed to kill them all.

"Well I'm quite lucky, aren't I?" I chuckled as I still lost 3 of my creatures. One of each.

Even though I won in the end, I now needed to act more cautiously as I didn't have any magic power to make new creatures.

As I stood in the lab, I realized that it was not safe to stay there anymore. It was only a matter of time before more creatures appeared, and I didn't have enough resources to defend myself. I had to leave and find a new place to make my shelter.

I stepped outside, feeling the cold air hit me immediately. I wrapped my jacket tighter around me and looked around, trying to figure out where to go.

Unfortunately, Paris wasn't the greatest place to make a shelter. The forest near the city was a good option, but I didn't want to be near the others.

And as such, I started walking toward the opposite side. Maybe going a little away from the city will prove to be a better idea.

So I started to walk toward the east, trying to roam around the buildings to avoid monsters. I didn't know if I could survive if I were to face another pack of wolves head-on.

After what felt like hours, I finally reached the outskirt of the city. I didn't meet any human on the way here, but it was probably better as it would have been unnecessary conflict.

As I continued to walk, I finally saw a clearing up ahead. It was small, but it would be perfect for my shelter. I hurried toward it, feeling a sense of relief wash over me.

As I approached the clearing, I noticed that there was a small stream nearby. A frozen stream. However, I couldn't be happier than that as I could just unfreeze it with time. It was such a good sign for me as I would need water to survive.
