Chereads / Apocalypse Dawning / Chapter 2 - 2. THE PROMISE

Chapter 2 - 2. THE PROMISE

Watanabe was an orphan that was raised by a mercenary who taught her the ways of the sword, she's temperamental (character's personality). She came from one of those towns that were not under the protection of Zyron. Her guardian wanted her to have a normal life like a normal kid, he often called her deadweight and other mean names with the intention of discouraging her from living his lifestyle. On a certain day he spoke to her and broke the news to her, this left her in tears.

She hailed from Retsluv, this town was quite far from Zyron. It was susceptible to raids by monsters and bandits, these acts degraded the town from what it used to be. Her guardian was a leader of a mercenary. He was the core reason why the town, although in ruins, still stood till this day. Before Watanabe left for the nearest city Griklin, under Zyron's protection, she was given a katana.

Bells rang and Watanabe snapped back to reality, her teacher asked her a question before leaving for the next period but she couldn't give an answer, causing other kids in the classroom to laugh at her, calling her daydreaming names. She sat down as soon as the teacher left the room. Gave a menacing stare at the rest of her mates and was about to put her head on her desk when a shockwave hit the building. screams could be heard everywhere before they all blanked out. Fortunately, she woke up a short while after and found some of her mates yelling, others trying to pick at the rubbles blocking the entrance, others curled up like a ball. It seemed hopeless, they were on the highest floor so the window was a bad idea. She walked up to the back of the classroom where she had one of her kendo sticks (she's been warned several times to stop bringing practice sticks into the classroom, Moreover the Kendo club was just behind their class).

She took the stick, walked towards the blocked entrance, told her mates nearby to back off,

"wha..what are you doing?" one asked surprisingly.

"She must have lost it" said another.

Watanabe raised the stick high enough and swung it at the entrance, immediately it touched the rubble, it exploded outwardly.

"Hehhhhhh?!!!!" they screamed in unison.

They were shocked due to what just happened right before them as it seemed impossible,

"we acknowledged that you were better at kendo than the rest of us, has the gap been this wide? Have you been looking down on us?" A kendo club member in the same class walked up to her and asked,

"I dunno, ever since I woke up..I felt kinda different...it felt like my body aint stiff and it's lighter than before" Watanabe replied.

"Different?" Their questions echoed. "Look I don't know how ta prove it, let's first get outta here aiight?" She managed to bring them back to reality.

As they got out of the classroom, they met their teacher sprawled on the floor.

"Oy..Class rep, i ain't good at ordering peeps, how 'bout ya tell them everythin' I tell ya?" She tells her class Rep. The ever so bold class rep nodded meekly.

"ok.. tell some of 'em ta bring as much kendo sticks as possible, I can't adjust my strength when it comes to this thing" she said checking the partially destroyed stick on her hand.

The rep did as she was told, had some students carry the teacher along the way also.

Watanabe kept on changing bamboo swords since she couldn't control the explosive power. They did this till they all got out of the building safely.

They were the last to arrive outside.

They got as far away as possible from the tall buildings around them.

"what are we going to do? it's over" a staff said hugging his knees outside.

"what do you mean it's o-"

" *Clap *Clap *Clap* okay okay, I want everyone to gather at the school field, I have an important announcement to make"

the principal interrupted.

Watanabe noticed him earlier when he approached them.

While roll call was ongoing, the principal stood in front of the students, waiting to announce something to them.

they all looked worried, some staff tried to hide it, some couldn't.

The field being too crowdy made the roll call a lot more hectic than they expected it to be.

"No one is missing!" a staff shouted towards the principal.

"*clears throat* Firstly, as you all know, we are in a bind. I'm glad you all are safe, I'll have to inform you that this disaster that happened was unprecedented. All electronic devices are down, there's no way of us knowing if the earth quake affected the whole city or just this area. It will take a while to have school activities up and running, this being a boarding school, we can't have you people leaving the school premises till your relatives come for you. You are probably wondering how they'll know since there's no way to confirm that it's just a part of the city that was affected or the whole. we'll have our staff check the Education Bureau to lend us a hand..."

He told them the reality of the situation they were in.

Watanabe who wasn't interested in any of these, heard school activities would be placed on hold grinned. she snuck out from the crowd and headed towards the school dormitory. The principal didn't notice since he was backing the dormitory, but the students did. while some were about to speak up, they were shushed by others.

'?' muttered one of the students.

'Shhh.. let the principal round up his speech then we can find out... the general situation is bad enough, interrupting him would be worse'

they watched her fade into the dorm.

"...as you can see the dorms are in bad conditions, luckily the fault missed the new one. although it hasn't been completed yet, the ground floor is very much usable in this condition...."

Watanabe had gone into the building by the time the principal had looked to address the students about the dorms current state. She made her way through a broken window into a room on the ground floor. She had two kendo sticks with her, with these she cleared every boulder and rubbles preventing her from making it to her room. Her room was on the upper floor of the dorm. she had to be careful since the stairs were partially busted. After a lot of maneuvering, she got to her destination. In her room, she found a few of her clothes, dusty but still intact, a dusty pair of shoes, and her bag. She remembered her katana so she searched around the room, luckily it was intact, the sheathe didn't take any damage. With her things in one hand, her katana on her waist, she held the Kendo stick with her major hand and headed out of the building.

".... I would like us to congratulate Watanabe Nanako for getting us safely out of the school building. She is an extra ordinary girl, her quick wittedness and tactics played a huge role today. Watanabe step forward please" The principal said.

A moment of silence passed, then murmurs could be heard.

The staff checked around, "Watanabe! where are you", some school mates checked, till someone responded, "she's not here"

"Huh, what do you mean she isn't here? she answered during roll call" her home room teacher asked.

"Watanabe!" others yelled her name as they searched amongst themselves.

"I'm here" she said directly at the back of the principal. which startled him.

"okay good, I would like the students to congratulate you based on your bra- ... is that a bag I see with you? how did y-?" the principal said turning around to face her

"I'm leaving" she interrupted blankly. Her dead like eyes staring at the principal, he broke a sweat.

"you heard me earlier, you are not allowed to leave the school grounds till your parent(s) come for you" he said trying to take his stand and making her know that she was still a student.

"Ya don't mind hearing me out do ya?.... first off, I ain't from around here, I'm from an unpopular town called Retsluv, dunno if y'all have heard of it. We don't have schools, hospitals, nor any of the good stuff y'all have here, our town is in shambles, always been raided by bandits and creatures. we've asked for aid several times from other towns and cities but I guess they've got their own ta take care of. My old man is the reason Retsluv hadn't been wiped out yet.... he's been fighting for decades protecting that town. I wasn't strong enough to be by his side, we'd argue severally till he came to a conclusion...said he'll acknowledge my decision after I complete schoolin'..... said it'll be possible that I'd change my mind.. like hell I'd... I want to save my town. my old man can't leave there ta pick me up, I'm goin' to meet him... The deal is off" she said smiling clenching her fist.

"I know how you feel, but you're still a child, there's no way he'll want you to come back looking this young" the principal tried to persuade her.

"the deal is off, besides I'm stronger than y'all, I'm goin', don't try to stop me" she said as she headed towards the school exit.

The crowd couldn't do anything but stare in awe.

The principal had the gym teacher stand by the gate throughout the whole orientation to prevent students from going out. The gym teacher could make out a student approaching the gate, he went to intercept such student.

"Hey where do you think you're going?" He said, halting and obstructing Watanabe.

She looked back towards the principal and the rest of the crowd and then faced the gym teacher.

"Satoshi sensei, I'm going out" she said

"didn't the principal tell you not to leave?" he asked her folding his arms.

"move aside Satoshi Sensei, or I'll move you" she said coldly.

"huh... what's gotten into you Watanabe? go back now!" he ordered her pointing back to the crowd.

she turned back and took a few steps then turned to face him again and stopped. The P.E teacher had one of his eye brows raised.

she wore her bag properly and took a kendo stance

"oy oy come on, you don't wanna do this" he said sighing.

(apparently the news of her feats hadn't gotten to him yet)

she took two steps forward and swung the Kendo stick at him with her might but stopped mid-way.

The force from the katana created air pressure that knocked him away.

"Stop me if ya can" she said grinning like a devil.

He quivered. "That girl... She's a.. she's a monster" he muttered to himself as he stood up. He had his hands high in the air to show he surrendered. She simply scoffed at him and walked through the gate.
