Chapter 6 - Chapter V: Day of Evolution, Part 3

When Bridget entered the last number in the keypad thingy, her eyes went wide like a deer in headlights. She knew she fucked up and the loud, blaring alarm sirens only confirmed it. The corridor that was kinda dark before became like a red room with the bright-ass beams that were lighting up the floor like crazy. It was so damn red I could feel the red light in my stomach and on my skin. It didn't make looking easier, anyway.

Thanks to some luck, though, Bridget had enough time to try another password, and that one seemed to work. She knocked out the power and the door to the storage room came loose as the super obnoxious red light died off and was replaced by whatever back-up generator took its place. There was still light but it was way weaker and only gave off faint shapes.

Bridget took a deep sigh of relief and grabbed me by the hand to walk me into the storage room. We crouched all the way in and didn't really have that much trouble since we just felt around for the freezing cold walls inside.

"We gotta go quickly," she said, "find the thing. Get the thing. And take that thing outta here."

I flicked my flashlight on and began to run around the storage room, checking every one of those closed freezers. They were like drawers, but each one I opened had this cool mist coming off of it. I remember it being called nitrogen, or something. Whatever it was, it was keeping all sorts of juices and chemicals cool and refridged. It took me a hot minute before I finally got to a freezer-drawer-fridge-thing that had purple cans in it. And let me tell you, it was the prettiest juice I'd ever seen in my life. It was the same one Bridget was talking about.

"Bridget", I hushed over, "is this what we're looking for?"

She rushed over and looked over it, glancing back at me. "How are you so good at this?"

I chuckled in a very unsuspicious way, "dad never shared his cool toys and secrets with me, so I've gotten used to finding things out on my own—"

And before I could grab the can out, fully covered by the bright ass glow, I was frozen almost to death as I heard a pair of guns click behind us. The sound came from the main door of the storage room. I raised my hands by second nature and heard footsteps getting closer and closer.

"I've got the intruders in view." Said some robotic-voiced dude, "South East Storage Room S-77. The one by the generator. Send additionals."

One of the goons spoke again, from the tone, it sounded like a different guy. "What? We haven't properly ID'd them!"

The first goon spoke again, "if the boss says do it, you do it. Fire on 3."

And in that moment, I wanted nothing more but to get out of there.

As he began to count down, time froze. My heart started to beat a thousand times per second. It beat so fast, I couldn't even hear it anymore. And for a brief moment, it felt like every atom in my body was lit on fire. Like I'd been dipped in melting lava; or a deep frying basket, whatever's hotter. My bones began to vibrate nonstop, like my skeleton wanted to leap out of my body. Worse yet, what was supposed to be a few seconds before getting offed, felt like forever. Like everything went slow-mo.

I looked at my hands and the heat I was imagining was all the sudden real. Small sparks of red lightning shot off of my finger tips and I could see my veins light up like a night sky. Except it was all red. And before I knew it, I started darting around the room, bouncing off of the walls like a bead, leaving a smokey trail of red mist behind me. The goons were losing their minds over what was happening and started to shoot their guns at me, but I was too fast – way too fast. Bridget waited until they needed to reload their guns before her right arm turned into a pixelated, light blue shape; it looked like a cannon. It also worked like one 'cause she blasted them with it.

"Intruders are Evolved, I repeat intr—"

Before he could finish, he was plastered to the wall. She'd also let off one more shot, this one missed them both went straight for something important in the building; this was obvious 'cause the room started to collapse and fall apart.

I looked over to Bridget and saw her holding up some light blue disk. Like a shield or something. And through that transparent disk, I could see her squirming and wincing. As if she was waiting for them to take the shot.

I tried to walk over to here but ended up zipping there, instead. Not just a normal zip, but it was quick. Until then, I hadn't realized how fast I'd been moving. Worse part, was how hard it was to control. And the adrenamaline ,or whatever, wasn't helping. I couldn't stop shaking and jittering, vibrating all over.

She was freaking out, I was freaking out. I didn't know what the hell was going on, but it felt good. It felt like a feeling I'd been waiting for, all my life. And that wouldn't be the end of the surprises to come.

"Oh my god, dude.." I said, looking at my body that was glowing that same shade of dark red, then looking back at Bridget who was still freaking out in the corner. Her pixelated cannon went away and she walked over to me, all be it with a bit of slow-mo. She wasn't snail's speed or anything, but she was definitely running. Or at least trying to.

She then put her hand on my shoulder and just as quickly took it off, her face contorted in a mix of 'wow' and 'what the fuck'; whatever those two things mean. I think it might've been the fact that I was vibrating. Not like a phone, but like a professional, industrial-grade vibrating device or machine…

"Are. You. Okay?" And when she spoke in slow-mo, as well, I knew this'd be a nightmare. "We. Need. To. Get. That. Canister. And. Leave. NOW!" It felt like a forever before I heard the next word.

"Dude, we literally just got superpowers and I'm freaking out and everything feels so weird and you're talking really slow, but not slow enough to make it that much annoying but it's enough to really get on my nerves that it feels like I turned down the play-back speed on a video!"

"You. Are. Talking. Way. Too. Fast…" She said, "need. To. Slow. Down."

She slowly grabbed a purple canister and lead me out of the room and into the hallway. Just as we stepped foot on it, the lights quickly flicked on and saw someone at the other end of it. By the exit was none other than fucking Steel Prophet, hovering a few feet off the ground in her pretty, sleek and steel power armor.

This part was still going to shit; it was all the more uncomfortable seeing it do so in slow-motion. And at the end of the corridor, Prophet's voice echoed. "Nowhere. To. Run. Or. Hide. Put. That. Thing. Back.Or. I'll. Bury. You. Under. This. Rubble."

She then put her arms together in a sort of diving motion and I could see the metal melting and shifting to make a long and thick and cannon that began to charge up. I had time to think, but I didn't know what to do.

I looked back and saw that the way became blocked by rubble. We were cut off from that end. I thought maybe grabbing Bridget and running off, but I didn't know shit shit about my powers; I didn't want to get her clicked. And when options ran out, Bridget came clutch.

She pushed me behind her and lifted her forearm, displaying a pixelated circle – a shield, that would luckily block the blast from Prophet. Unluckily, though. Bridget redirected the blast upward and toward the ceiling that began to collapse on us.

That was the exact moment, I began to hear loud footsteps that sounded more and more like gunshots, coming from behind us. Where the rubble was, came a giant dude covered in purple rock. This guy was easily 10 feet tall and some change. Buff as hell. And as he moved closer, I could see him carrying someone in his right arm. Looked like a girl; no older than I was. I thought he was about to wreck our shit.

He instead put himself between us and the collapsing ceiling, stopping the rocks from hitting us.

"Hold. On. To. Her." He said, his voice sounding like crashing stone and breaking rock.

He set the girl down and used both arms to start lifting the biggest chunk of concrete that was about to us. Pushing it up.

Just when I thought the situation couldn't get worse, some other random guy appeared out of complete thin air. It was like small explosion of purple smoke and dust. The man that walked out had pale skin, dark black hair and goggles; the kind that have covered sides. He walked over to us and crouched down. Bridget seemed to recognize as him as "Vee"(?)

"All. Hands. On. Me." Vee said, "Exhale."

Everyone complied.

And for a moment, my whole body went numb.
