Chereads / Reincarnated with the Strongest God System / Chapter 25 - 25- Gathering Shadows

Chapter 25 - 25- Gathering Shadows

The next morning, Ray stood on the edge of the guild's training grounds, his mind focused and his resolve sharper than ever. The message from the crystal had confirmed what he had begun to suspect: the Abyss was not a solitary force. Others—perhaps even more powerful and cunning than Kael—were seeking to harness its power, and he would need to be prepared.

Ray took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his abilities settle over him. Each shadow within him pulsed with potential, like silent allies awaiting his command. He began his exercises, honing his connection to the Abyssal powers he'd acquired, testing their limits and preparing for whatever new challenges lay ahead. Shadows twisted and coiled around him, his control over them more fluid, more instinctive. His recent experiences had deepened his mastery, but he could feel there was still much more to learn.

As he moved through his forms, Althea approached, her expression serious. "Ray," she called out, crossing her arms as she watched him with an assessing gaze. "We received a report this morning. There's a disturbance near the borderlands. A small village, Wyldreach, has reported strange sightings—shadowy figures moving through the forest, unsettling the locals."

Ray stopped, sheathing his sword as he turned to her. "You think it's connected to the Abyss?"

She nodded. "The symptoms are too familiar to ignore. The guild has assigned a small team to investigate, but given your connection to the Abyss… I thought you might want to lead this one."

Ray considered this. The reports seemed ominously similar to Kael's influence, yet if there were others seeking to manipulate the Abyss, they might be operating with different methods, hidden motives. "I'll go," he said. "If these shadows are tied to the Abyss, we need to contain them before they spread."

Althea handed him a small scroll. "These are the coordinates and details. Be careful, Ray. Wyldreach is isolated, and there won't be much support if things go wrong."

Ray took the scroll, a flicker of determination in his gaze. "I understand."

The journey to Wyldreach took most of the day, the forest thickening as he approached the village. The atmosphere grew heavier, a silent warning that something was amiss. As he neared the village, Ray noticed faint tendrils of shadow lingering between the trees, moving as if alive, twisting in ways that defied nature.

When he reached Wyldreach, he found it nearly deserted. Doors were shut tight, windows barred, and an eerie quiet hung over the place. A lone figure, an elderly man, stood near the village square, his eyes wide with fear as he watched Ray approach.

"Are you… from the guild?" the man asked, his voice trembling.

Ray nodded. "I am. My name is Ray. I've come to investigate the disturbances. Can you tell me what you've seen?"

The man glanced nervously toward the forest. "It's… it's hard to describe. Shadows that move on their own. Sometimes they take shape, like people, but distorted. And at night… whispers. Voices that no one can understand."

Ray felt a chill run down his spine. This wasn't just residual Abyssal energy; someone was actively manipulating the shadows, perhaps summoning entities from the Abyss. "When did this start?"

"About a week ago," the man replied. "At first, we thought it was just the usual superstitions, but then people started seeing things, feeling… things." His voice dropped to a whisper. "They say the forest is alive now, that it watches us."

Ray thanked the man, his mind racing as he headed toward the forest's edge. If someone was using the Abyss in this area, he needed to find them before they caused any more harm.

---

The forest was dense and silent as Ray moved through it, his senses on high alert. The shadows seemed to shift in response to his presence, almost as if they recognized him. He activated his *Abyssal Cloak*, blending with the darkness around him, moving as one with the shadows as he delved deeper into the forest.

Soon, he felt it—a faint, pulsing energy, a presence that resonated with the Abyss. He followed the sensation, weaving through the trees until he came upon a small clearing. At its center stood a figure, cloaked in dark robes, their face obscured. They were chanting softly, their hands moving in intricate patterns, manipulating a small, swirling portal of shadows.

Ray's hand went to his sword, his voice steady. "Who are you, and what are you doing here?"

The figure froze, their head turning slowly to face him. Though he couldn't see their face, Ray felt the weight of their gaze, cold and calculating. "Ah… so you're the guild's Abyss-wielder. I was wondering when they'd send you."

Ray's grip tightened. "Answer my question."

The figure chuckled, a sound that grated against the quiet of the forest. "I am but a servant, one among many. The Abyss is not your weapon alone, Ray. Others have heard its call, and they are more than willing to answer."

Ray's eyes narrowed, his instincts flaring with warning. "What do you want with Wyldreach?"

The figure lifted a hand, gesturing toward the portal. "This place is a focal point, a place where the barriers between worlds grow thin. The Abyss needs access points, and I am here to provide them."

Ray stepped forward, shadows coiling around him as he drew his sword. "Not if I stop you."

The figure didn't move, but Ray felt the tension rise as the shadows around the clearing began to writhe. "You can try, Ray," the figure taunted. "But you're only one. And the Abyss is endless."

Without another word, the figure raised both hands, and the portal expanded, dark energy flooding the clearing as shadowy forms began to emerge—twisted creatures, barely humanoid, their eyes gleaming with malevolent light.

Ray braced himself, activating *Void Rend* to cut through the nearest creature, his blade slicing cleanly as it dissolved into wisps of darkness. The other creatures lunged at him, their claws raking through the air as Ray dodged and struck back, his movements swift and precise.

The figure watched, seemingly amused as Ray fought. "You're strong, but you're only delaying the inevitable. The Abyss will spread, and nothing can stand in its way—not even you."

Ray gritted his teeth, focusing his energy as he unleashed *Abyssal Dominion*, tendrils of shadow extending from him and binding the creatures in place. With a fierce pull, he dissolved them into nothingness, the clearing briefly falling silent.

But the figure merely laughed, the portal still swirling behind them. "You've learned much, Ray, but not enough. You can't stop what's coming."

Ray raised his sword, stepping forward. "Then I'll stop you."

The figure's form began to flicker, blending with the shadows. "We shall see. This is only the beginning, Ray. The Abyss has many followers, and they will come for you, one by one."

With that, the figure vanished into the shadows, leaving only the portal behind. Ray moved quickly, chanting an incantation to close the rift. The portal resisted, pulsing with dark energy, but he poured his will into it, forcing it to collapse.

As the portal faded, Ray took a steadying breath, the weight of the encounter pressing down on him. Whoever that figure was, they were part of something much larger—a network of individuals determined to expand the Abyss's influence. He'd fought Kael and won, but it seemed the true threat was only beginning to reveal itself.

A notification appeared in his vision.

Ray clenched his fists, feeling the familiar burn of determination. The Abyss was growing bolder, its influence spreading beyond isolated rifts and sorcerers. If there were others like the figure he'd encountered—servants of the darkness, bound by the same force he wielded—then he needed to be ready.

This was a new chapter in his journey, one that would test every skill he'd honed and every bit of knowledge he'd gained. But Ray was no longer just a hunter of shadows. He was a force of the Abyss in his own right, and he would not rest until he had rooted out every trace of corruption from the realms.

With a final look at the darkened forest, Ray turned and began his journey back to the guild, the path ahead uncertain but clear in his mind. The Abyss was rising, but he would meet it head-on, one shadow at a time.
