Chapter 1 - I - Prologue

University always scared you, more than college. After years of joking around and being careless, you found yourself being catapulted by the world of adults, where no one cares if you couldn't do a certain thing, or if you couldn't do a thing for other reasons. In the end, you didn't do what they asked you.

No one cares about what you're good at or bad at. You just have to do it, whether it turned out well or not. But if it turned out bad, then, that, meant you were still a silly little kid.

After that, there was your pessimistic side, which always changed your visions of the world, in general. That side of you never amused anyone, except for your friends, who were brave enough to deal even with your cosmic pessimism.

Probably, that side of you always made you think that you weren't ready enough to attend college because you were still one of those silly kids. However, that didn't mean that you didn't put one hundred percent of your energy and effort in every exam and project. Your grades weren't bad, there came your critical side that started whispering in your ear phrases like "I can do better", "I'm not satisfied", and "I'll do my best".

That behaviour of yours was making your uni year terribly heavy and unlivable. And you didn't want the other students to pass their best years like you.

This is why you chose that faculty. Literature.

Your friend, who was walking on your right side, groaned way too loudly for your liking and for the rest of the students that were dragging their feet in the hallway.

Once you and your friends reached your classroom, Taeyoung, one of your friends, let himself heavily fall on the chair, throwing his bag on the desk, unconcerned about some of his pens hitting the ground.

"God, when will this end?"

He grumbled for the second time in five minutes. You bent on your knees to pick the pens up for your friend before slamming them on the table in front of him, making the latter jolt.

"When you finally manage to get your degree."

You replied, annoyed by how childish and irresponsible your friend was. Taeyoung was older than you and younger than your other friend Juyeon, but mentally, he was the most immature. Not that Juyeon, who was actually the oldest of the group, was cleverer. For that reason, Taeyoung was still in his last year of college.

His parents owned a huge company so he didn't have any economic problems. Rather, he seemed to have taken advantage of his current assets to take his studies easy. Way too easy, in your opinion.

But you didn't really care about Taeyoung's decisions. What you really cared about was to get your own degree and start working as a teacher, as you had always wished since you were little.

You pulled out of your backpack, a book and started reading it while waiting for the teacher to arrive. Juyeon was napping, his head laid better in his arms, snoring lightly.

The story in the book was getting more and more interesting as you went on reading, but your annoying and spoiled friend Taeyoung snatched it from your hands, almost tearing apart the pages.

You tried to take it back, but your friend stretched his arm behind him, making it impossible for you to reach it.

"Why don't you give a look to something better than an old and boring book?"

He asked rhetorically and tilted his head, indicating to you to look at the entrance for the classroom where a certain someone had just made her appearance.

Her shiny, black hair swung at every step she took before sitting on her chair, three rows in front of where you and your friends were. She was wearing one of her usual midi dresses, this one was baby blue with small, white flowers printed on it. Her big, light brown eyes shone and disappeared into half moons when she spotted her best friend and on her pretty red lips drew a wide smile, showing her beautiful white teeth.

You were enchanted by her beauty and her elegance. You had a massive crush on Lee Areum, a girl that was in your faculty. Though, you were too shy to tell her your feelings, scared she might reject you. You'd rather stay an unknown for her, rather than being someone she friend-zoned.

"Why don't you talk to her? At least, introduce yourself."

Suggested a sleepy Juyeon with his eyes still closed and mumbling lightly. Just the thought of getting so close to her, and maybe shake her hand, made your cheeks turning the same color as a tomato. You would have loved her to know about your existence, but you were too insecure to do something like that.

Taeyoung slapped your shoulder, making you lean a bit on the desk for the strength he used. You threw a glance with his eyes pressed in a straight line, mentally cursing his friend.

"C'mon, with all the books you read, there must be a way to talk to her elegantly and romantically."

Taeyoung said, emphasizing the adjectives with his fingers. You gave him a puzzled expression, wondering how your love for books would've helped you in winning a girl's heart.

Yes, they were in the same faculty, but that didn't mean that you could imitate one of Shakespeare's tragedies or recite one of Eugenio Montale's poetries. Goosebumps for the embarrassment appeared on your skin just by thinking about what face she would make if you ever did that.

"There's no way I'm ever going to do that."

You spat, taking back your book and throwing it inside your backpack, annoyed by your oldest friend. Bothering you was Taeyoung's favorite hobby and he had so much fun doing it, he would've never stopped.

You both were complete opposites and probably this was the main reason why Taeyoung loved teasing him that much. Taeyoung was more careless while you were more thoughtful and rational in everything you did. You weren't able to let yourself go or to think with your heart than with you mind.

However, you didn't know what was going on in your friend's mind. His plan was simple and stupid, but he knew that it'll work with you. After all, the latter was really stubborn, sometimes, and that trait played a huge advantage for Taeyoung.

"Guys, after today's lessons, come to my house. I want to talk to you about something."

The second oldest claimed before giving the two of his friends a malicious smile. Both of the guys didn't really pay attention to Taeyoung's expression since he was always so playful and mischievous by nature.

You and Juyeon only nodded, not really caring about what he was up to. Juyeon lifted his head with his eyes still closed while stretching his arms in the air when the teacher entered the classroom and slammed his books on the surface of the guy's desk, making the sleepy male groan and cover his ears with his hands.

═⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯═

The three males were lazily walking towards Taeyoung's home, which wasn't that far from the campus and from your apartment, for your happiness.

You all entered the villa and abandoned the backpacks and your shoes at the entrance. Juyeon dove onto the leather, black couch, letting out a loud moan when his body bounced on the sofa.

Taeyoung disappeared right after entering his house and you noticed it right away while looking at the huge bookshelf placed against the wall, in the living room. There were a lot of books and you wondered if the male had ever read at least one of those.

The owner of the house stomped his feet down the stairs, alerting the other two males that he was coming back to them. A frown appeared on your forehead as soon as he realized that Taeyoung was holding something in his arms.

The male look at his friends with a shining smile on his lips, before finally explaining his true intentions.

"Let's play truth or dare!"

He exclaimed, shaking lightly the thing he had with him. He walked into the living room and placed that thing on the floor. While he was walking to the empty space between the two sofas, he slapped Juyeon's bottom, ordering him to stand up and join you and him.

"Leave me alone, I want to sleep."

Juyeon protested, his words muffled by the pillow where he had his head on. You yanked the sleeve of his hoodie, once he sat down in front of Taeyoung.

Juyeon let himself heavily fall on the floor on your left side whereas cursing his two friends for disturbing him during his nap.

Taeyoung clapped his hands, excited and enthusiastic to finally talk about what he wanted to do that afternoon with his friends. He then, brushed his hands against each other before moving them in front of the thing in the middle of the three males.

You were looking at him with a blank expression, waiting for him to stop being so dumb and tell you what he insisted on doing once and for all.

"You see this? It's a Ouija board. I bought it the other day in a thrift store. The cashier seemed happy to finally get rid of this."

Taeyoung began while stroking his chin when he pronounced the last part of the sentence. Juyeon scoffed and crossed his arms.

"And you're wondering why?"

He asked, making fun of the black-haired male. Taeyoung glanced at him, silently telling him to shut up. Juyeon rolled his eyes and laid his head on the cushion of the sofa behind his back.

Taeyoung cleared his throat before continuing with his explanation.

"Anyway, I want to play with this. What do you guys think? Are you up for it?"

He asked, his eyes were shining with hope and excitement. He couldn't wait to start playing with his little jewel he luckily found at a good price.

You wasn't truly convinced that playing with a demonic board was the smartest thing to do when you were bored. But at the same time, you thought that there was no possibility that the board in front of you was an original board that could actually summon a demon.

This is why he nodded and looked at Juyeon, who moved his eyes from you to Taeyoung quickly. In the end, he grunted and smacked his hands on his thighs when he let them fall.

"Alright, let's do it."

He agreed. Taeyoung triumphed and started to read through some pages that were in the same box with the board. When he found what he was looking for, he handed it to you, who reluctantly grab it with your eyebrows furrowed.

"We're going to play truth or dare and the loser, who lies or who doesn't accept his dare, has to use the board to summon a demon called... Uhm..."

You looked at the piece of paper in your hands, reading through it quickly and trying to understand what he had to do with it.

The title was clear, just like Taeyoung's aim for that afternoon. At the top, in the center, there was a capital phrase written with the same font as the letters on the board. The title said:

HOW TO SUMMON A SUCCUBUS.

The question arose spontaneously in your chest and started asking himself why Taeyoung had bought a Ouija board.

"Succubus?"

You asked and, at the same moment, replying to your friend's explanation. The oldest snapped his fingers and pointed his index finger towards you while repairing small "yes".

Juyeon scoffed again and looked at Taeyoung with lips slightly parted, on his face an expression of scepticism.

"Wait. You want to play with this thing and you don't even know what we might summon?"

Juyeon inquired, on the verge of laughing hysterically when his friend smiled sheepishly. You sighed in disbelief and went on to read the paper with the instructions, pretending that you didn't see what just happened.
