Chapter 17 - Day 1 of the school field trip Part 3

Yon and Yui enter the hotel still side by side, other students notice them walking in, and Kanna, who is in the hotel lobby, notices as well. The students all mutter amongst themselves.

"Are they dating?"

"Look how close they are!"

"No way! Did Yon do something to her?"

"I bet they did something last night."

Kanna worries, overhearing all these comments about her brother and Yui. She wonders the same thing as the students.

"No way... big brother would never do that... right? I mean, Yon has always been kind, but... after Sam rejected him... Oh no, has he... has he become a full-on perverted playboy?"

Kanna becomes fully overwhelmed with her own thoughts, becomes embarrassed, and rushes towards the elevator. She pushes several students out of the way and gets into the open elevator.

"Hey! We were here first."

She glares at the student, and the student, startled, backs away.

"We'll... just get the next one."

The elevator door slowly closes as her glares pierce through every student in the lobby.

"What was her problem?" the student grumbles.

Yon and Yui separate as they enter the next elevator after waiting for some time for the lobby to clear out. Yon, completely oblivious to what the students were saying, is standing blissfully happy in the elevator. Yui, however, who overheard some students, is concerned about how his image will look now.

"Hey, Yon... are you not worried how the other students will look at us... you know, standing so close like we were..."

Yon thinks for a moment, puckering his lips, before relaxing them and confidently smiling.

"Nah, not really. I was just trying to keep you warm, was all. I see nothing wrong with being a good friend."

"I see..."

"So it really wasn't anything..."

Yui frowns in disappointment, thinking that maybe Yon was being flirty with her. The elevator dings as it reaches their floor, the two leaving the elevator, ice cream in tow. They enter their room and sit everything from the day down on the table.

"Want some ice cream?"

Yon holds a bucket of vanilla ice cream in his hands, smiling at Yui. She smiles back, feeling a little guilty about the situation.

"Sure."

The two sit together on the floor in the middle of the room, both sharing ice cream from the same container.

"I can't believe it's still cold!"

"Me either... We bought this so long ago."

Yui goes to scoop another piece of ice cream out and Yon also goes for some at the same time. Yui suddenly realizes that they were sharing the same tub the entire time. Her face turns red and her eyes widen.

"Oh, my god! We were sharing the same ice cream the entire time! Doesn't this... Doesn't this count as an indirect kiss?!"

She freezes up completely unable to move, her brain going into overdrive at the thought of a kiss from Yon. Her heart pounds and she can't take it anymore. She sets her spoon down and quickly stands up. Yon looks up at her, surprised at her sudden change.

"I gotta use the bathroom!"

Yui rushes to the bathroom and slams the door behind her, locking the door. Yon, completely confused by the situation, sits with a mouthful of ice cream.

"What was that all about?"

Yui, meanwhile, is sitting against the bathroom door, covering her face, completely embarrassed.

"What is wrong with me? Why do I have such powerful feelings for him... I can't be in love with him... right? We have barely just met... but yet... he is so kind... not to mention he is pretty cute... when he had ice cream- wait, what am I saying?!"

Yui shakes her head from left to right, squirming around, confused why she is thinking these thoughts.

"No! This can't be. I can't be in love with someone already. It's too soon. I can't be in love with him. I can't..."

Just then, Yon knocks on the bathroom door.

"Hey Yui, are you ok?"

Yui frantically thinks of something to say, moving away from the door.

"Um, uh yeah! I'm fine! Just using the bathroom!"

Yui runs water acting like she is washing her hands, she turns off the faucet and opens the door quickly, thinking Yon has moved away, but she bumps straight into him causing her to fall back, Yon is afraid of her hitting her head something moves in quickly to catch her.

"Yui!"

She winces and closes her eyes to brace for the impact, but Yon catches her just in time. She slowly opens her eyes to see Yon's face directly in front of her. The two stare at each other as Yon holds her, his arms wrapped around her to make sure she is safe from falling against the floor. The two blush tomato red, silent, and unable to move. Yui's heart beat fast. Just as she says something, Yon loses his footing and the two fall towards the floor, Yon's arms still wrapped around her. Yon now sits over Yui, his left leg in between her thighs. His face inches away from hers. The two breathe rapidly after the stressful situation and stare at each other, even more embarrassed now.

Yon realizes how close they are and quickly gets up.

"I-I'm sorry Yui."

He puts out his hand to help her up, and Yui grabs on, being pulled up from the bathroom floor by Yon.

"It's ok..."

The two stand, still embarrassed about what had just happened.

"Um, there's still some ice cream if you want some."

"Y-Yeah... sure."

The two head back into the main room, Yui picking some ice cream from the vanilla tub, while Yon sits on his bed, turned away, worried he might have messed up. The two sit in awkward silence for some time before Yon turns around to face Yui.

"I'm sorry... you know, for falling on you..."

"N-No! Don't worry about it... you stopped me from hitting my head so..."

Both of their faces still burn red with embarrassment.

"Right... I just didn't want to make you uncomfortable is all..."

"You didn't make me feel uncomfortable... It really wasn't a problem."

"Yeah but still..."

Yon stares off into thought, not sure how to feel about the whole situation.

"She says it's fine... but was it really?"

He continues to think momentarily, when suddenly his nose feels a freezing sensation, and he snaps back into focus. Yui is standing in front of him, her arm extended out, a small piece of ice cream on the tip of her finger, touching Yon's nose. He blinks, confused at what she is doing.

"I said it's fine."

She pulls her finger away, leaving the ice cream on Yon's nose. He smiles, wiping the ice cream off with his finger before eating it.

"Feel better now?"

"Yeah, thanks Yui."

The two smile at each other before Yui sits down beside Yon, the two discussing their trip to the amusement park tomorrow. The hotel is silent as everyone sleeps soundly, everyone but Kareen. She has her head covered underneath her blanket, silently crying.

"I miss you, mom..."

Five years ago, Kareen and her mother were traveling down the road after visiting Osaka Castle Park. It was a dark night, and the rain was heavy. Her mother took caution driving down the wet road but wasn't able to avoid the worst to come. A drunk driver, traveling dangerously fast down the road, lost traction on the road and collided with their vehicle. Her mother swerved to the side from the impact and hit a tree. The airbags deployed, and it knocked both Kareen and her mother out from the harsh impact.

After an unknown amount of time, Kareen awoke, her head aching. She slowly undid her seat belt and pushed the car door open.

"Mom? Hey mom... are you ok?"

She held her hand over her head to reduce the aching pain. Small amounts of blood trailed down her face. Minor scratches and bruises laced across her face and arms. She slowly stumbled over to the driver's side door, her mother's head lying limply on the deployed airbag.

"Mom, wake up..."

Their vehicle, that was just driving them peacefully down the road, was now mashed inward at the front, like a juice box being squeezed from the center. The impact from hitting the tree littered parts across the ground, smoke leaving the remaining parts of the engine left in the car. Kareen pulls on the driver's side door, struggling to open it. When it finally gives, she was pulling so hard it causes her to fall on her butt. She winces in pain, closing her eyes. She slowly opens them, her vision coming into focus on her mother. Horror consumes Kareen, as her eyes widen.

"Mom... Mom, please wake up..."

An icy chill runs down her spine. She frantically stands up and runs over to her mother.

"Mom! Please wake up right now. Mom!"

She holds her mother's arm, screaming. Her mother's head was soaked in blood, her lifeless eyes staring blankly at nothing. Blood runs outward from her mouth, a sharp piece of metal piercing her upper chest. Kareen steps back slowly, tears falling down her cheeks, along with small traces of blood.

She shakingly reaches for her phone in her pocket, dragging it out. The cracked screen lights up as she taps the display. She slowly inputs one-one-nine into the phone. Her breathing becomes more frantic as the phone rings. An emergency service representative answers the phone.

"Emergency services, what are the emergency and location?"

"M-My mom... she isn't breathing... we are off the main road from Osaka Castle Park..."

"Ok, I understand. Is your mother hurt or anything?"

"Yes... we were in a car accident..."

"Ok, please stay where you are. We have an ambulance en route to your location."

"Ok..."

She pulls her phone down away from her face, the representative still talking on the other side of the call. She stares at her mother's lifeless body. Kareen falls to the ground, sitting flat. She screams at the sky, shrieking. Rain falls and thunder cracks through the clouds. Back in the present day, Kareen continues crying, unable to sleep. Across the room in the other bed, Maka listens to her cry. She rests her head on her pillow with a haughty stare, unable to understand the emotion Kareen is feeling. The two both lay, unable to sleep. Tomorrow is another day in the city of Osaka.
