Chapter 9 - Night

Thankfully, the care package contained food, just as I remembered. Inside were multiple cans of food and dozens of water bottles.

Altogether, this would be enough to last us a week, maybe even more. But if anything were to happen, I had assigned a task to Rokas to gather food.

Now that the food problem was solved, the next thing we had to turn to was a place to sleep. By tomorrow, we would head towards the tallest building in the city to meet up with Rokas and Percivale.

Speaking of them, I wonder how those two are doing. With Rokas' superior defense, I had no doubts he would be able to handle even D+ rank monsters.

And seeing as how he had Percivale, a budding flower that would bloom soon, they were sure to emerge victorious in any fights they encountered.

"We'll be looking for a place to sleep now. We should get moving." I called out to Alter, who was resting nearby.

"Why not just rest here?"

"Dungeons spawn monsters endlessly. We got lucky with this only having ghouls, but there's always an issue with them ambushing us."

The thought of using this place as a shelter did cross my mind for a slight moment, but at the moment, it was still too dangerous.

"Taking turns." Alter murmured, although I couldn't hear her quite clearly.

"What was that?"

"I said we could take turns watching!"

"No need for that. Our priority is being at our top conditions when we go out to explore. By tomorrow, students can officially attack us and steal our loot."

I knew very well that this examination was being monitored by the Academy teachers. So I didn't doubt that some of them had eyes on Dainsleif, especially after seeing its power.

Too bad. I wasn't planning on giving it away to anyone.

The part about students being allowed to attack each other was a rule that was strongly looked down upon when it was first proposed, but it was allowed on the condition that no battles were to be fought between cadets on the first day.

This rule was implemented as a way to teach future students that you could never trust anyone. Even your closest friends could backstab you the moment you lost your worth to them.

But seeing as how we still hadn't encountered a single group today, I wasn't worried. The real problem would be the test after this.

Once I exited the dungeon with Alter, we headed north, in the direction of the tallest building.

It was settled that we would make camp near the area to make sure we would be able to arrive early the next day.

After dispatching a few more monsters, we finally arrived at where we would be camping tonight: a hospital.

This one would be the location of another care package that would be helpful for us.

But unlike the first, there was no dungeon here to obstruct us.

If I remembered correctly, the care package here contained medical supplies and all sorts of antidotes.

The only thing we were allowed to bring into the exam with us was one artifact. Items from the outside world were forbidden.

So having something to keep us healthy would be just as, if not more important than food.

We set up camp at the entrance of the hospital, inside the storage room. There were plenty of windows around us, so I didn't worry about us getting trapped.

We also ignited a small fire and placed some rocks around it to make sure it wouldn't spread farther than we wanted it to.

And after finishing that, I took out a can of food and a bottle of water. After heating it up with the fire, we quickly ate dinner.

And then it was time for bed. As I was about to place my rag down, Alter hissed at me.

"Farther."

"What do you mean?" I tilted my head.

"Farther, you idiot! I'm not sleeping this close to you!"

But, I was already quite far away from her. The distance was about two me's, and I was pretty tall the last time I looked in the mirror.

"Alright then." I brought my rag all the way to the other end of the room.

After arranging my "bed", I quickly lied down, having been tired from all the work we did today.

Alter seemed to have lied down, too. She slept with her back towards me, but after hearing her rhythmic breathing soon kick in, I surmised that she was already asleep.

Now was the time to move. I picked up Dainsleif from beside me and went for the door.

Just as my hand touched the doorknob, I heard murmurs behind me.

"No, that's not real…. Mother and Father are still alive."

"..."

"I'm going to save them… just watch me, Percivale."

Tears were welling up in her eyes. She must be having a bad dream.

I didn't expect her trauma to be this bad, though. Looking at her closely, my thoughts began to take over.

She was just an ordinary girl who was forced to adapt to the situation she found herself in.

She trained earnestly to be able to reach her current level and even attended the Academy to grow even stronger. I knew just how much she wanted to kill that demon.

"I may not be a reliable person in your eyes right now, but I hope I slowly become more favorable as the days go by. I know your pain, and will do my utmost best to help you relieve it. This is my promise as the au–"

My words were stopped when I heard a loud thud somewhere in the hospital.

Something must've happened. I opened the door and quickly walked out.

***

What did he just say? He knew my pain!? How ludicrous! No one can understand my pain but me and my brother.

I was just about preparing to head off to sleep but was stopped when I heard that man talking to me.

At first, I thought he was planning to do something to me. I was weak at the moment, and I knew he could overpower me if he chose to.

I channeled what was left of my mana and was preparing to unleash a spell when he approached me.

But what came out of his mouth was something I did not expect.

He went on to ramble about being not reliable. He hoped that my view of him would somehow get better.

He wishes that would happen.

"I know your pain, and will do my utmost best to help you relieve it."

He's going to do it, isn't he? He's going to assault me right here!

"This is my promise to you as the au–"

As the what? As the what!? How can you fulfill such a half-hearted promise!?

I hadn't noticed it, but that man had long left.

***

From the source of the sound, I was able to surmise where the rough location of the sound was coming from.

The sounds seemed to be getting louder the more I approached the second floor. I drew Dainsleif from its sheath and cautiously made my way up the stairs.

The night seemed to be peaceful today. The sky was filled with stars and the moon seemed to shine brighter than before.

If the sound was taken out of the picture, it would've made for a tranquil and overall peaceful night.

That was why I had to get rid of the source.

I was soon able to reach the sound. It was in the second-floor lobby.

There he was. I saw the figure of a man dancing in the shadows. With his fists, he moved swiftly between the group of indescribable monsters attacking him.

A face that screamed of someone who never took things seriously. A relaxed expression that had a slight hint of excitement in it. He was relatively tall, about my height, and had messy dark hair that retreated slightly above his right eyelash. He wore a sleeveless vest and dark pants with boots. Seemed fitting for someone who moved their arms a lot.

I noticed a wind covering his fists. With every punch he threw, the target would burn up from the heat caused by the wind.

I thought it was weird. How exactly was a wind able to conjure flames? I moved a bit closer as I watched the man moving between the monsters.

He seemed to be doing fine. He hadn't taken a single hit from the moment I got here.

"Haha! Come one, come all! Get a free beating from the one and only Wang Jin! Only the women get to come closer!"

The man began spouting a bunch of nonsense that I didn't bother to register. What was this guy doing?

He seemed to be… enjoying the fight.

I calmly watched him as he continued beating down the monsters.

"That should be all. Man, they were disappointing. And none of them were even remotely attractive."

My danger senses suddenly started blaring when the man turned his head to my direction.

I immediately retreated back into the shadows, but it was too late.

"So there was another one! How could I have missed you!?"

The man instantly shot forward towards me, his punch cleanly shattering the corner of the wall.

I dodged backward away from the debris.

"Whoa, let's talk this out…" I tried to talk.

"A monster that speaks?! Sick! Hey, point me to the hottest girls in your race!" He said again, launching a punch at me.

"Don't blame me if this kills you!" I said, deflecting the blow and closing the distance between us.

In one swift motion, I drove the entirety of Dainsleif into his heart, handle included.

The man dropped to the floor with a thud, and the hospital was soon left silent.

I wiped off the blood on Dainsleif and placed it back into its sheath.

As I was preparing to walk back to camp, I heard something behind me.

Sure enough, I turned back. There I saw the man still standing as if it hadn't hurt him at all.

Were my eyes failing me? I could clearly see the stab wound I had inflicted on him was still there.

"Agh, that hurt, you idiot! I would've died if I hadn't moved my heart."

Moved… his heart?

"You look like you're confused. People have the same expression when they hear about me. Anyway, my name's Wang Jin. Sorry about attacking you, I thought you were a humanoid monster."

Wang Jin raised his hand out to shake mine. I slowly took his palm into mine.

"Damn, you have strong hands. You practice that sword a lot?"

"Y-yeah…" I say, still looking at the wound in his chest.

"Oh? This? Don't worry about it. If you stare so much, I might cream on the spot."

How… vulgar. I don't recall writing a character this dirty.

"It's a pretty damn deep wound as well. It doesn't seem to be healing, either. What's that sword got? Wounds can't be healed from it or something?"

Damn. He was right on the mark. I guess it's not too hard to figure out, seeing as how he was literally stabbed by it

"Heh. I must be right. What's your name?"

"Dignitas Qwerdan. Are you a student, too?"

"Me? Of course. I joined this Academy to get stronger, earn money, and bang chicks."

Maybe my memory has been failing me. A person with this much character must've made it into my story somehow, or maybe even in the drafts.

Eh. It's not like I had any way to check. I didn't even know if this world was actually a recreation of my novel or just a world that looks like it.

But damn, if it's the latter, the person who made it is sure as hell dedicated.
