Though it was something I had been expecting, I feel happy to see that the presentation of the new weaponry was a success. It was evident in the soldiers' eyes as they watched the weapon used in the test with admiration. Their thoughts were quite apparent as well, they were likely all curious to understand how the weapon functions.
As this thought lingered in my mind, Emi, who had been standing behind me since the beginning of the demonstration, suddenly spoke, capturing my attention. Her tone clearly displayed surprise and awe.
"And to think such a weapon could be created"
Upon hearing Emi's words, a smile of pride formed on my lips. Her genuine words brought a mixture of satisfaction and pride to me. Of course, I was aware of the potential impact of firearms, coming from a world where they were widely used and known for their destructive power. With this thought in mind, I turned to Emi and asked.
"What do you think? About the weapon, I mean"
Hearing my question, Emi seemed thoughtful for a few seconds before she began to speak. I sensed that her words were a bit restrained, probably trying not to disappoint me.
"I believe they will truly revolutionize the way wars occur. To be honest, I can't imagine an army losing as long as they have these weapons... but..."
Saying these words, Emi looked at me and seemed to hesitate before continuing. At this point, I already had an idea of what Emi was trying to express.
"It's okay, please go on. I want to hear your honest opinion about it"
I said, encouraging Emi to express her thoughts freely. Hearing my words, she nodded and took a deep breath. Then, her words resonated almost melodically, but also carried a certain amount of concern.
"But I also can't help but think that this could become extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. The potential for deaths resulting from this weapon... is probably greater than I can even imagine. It makes me question if it's really ethical for us to be creating a power like this"
When Emi concluded her words, her eyes sought mine, perhaps hoping to find some reaction in my expression. In reality, I felt genuinely glad to hear her candid perspective, and it was clearly reflected in my gaze, even causing a surprised expression on her face.
"You're not upset with me?"
Emi asked, her words carrying a mix of surprise and concern.
"When you heard what I said about something you've invested so much time and effort in creating? Even if it was with the intention of ensuring everyone's safety, and even if your initial intentions were positive?"
Emi spoke, with a regretful expression on her face. Her words had the effect of making my heart pause for a moment. I wondered how my wife could be so lovely. In response to Emi's question, I gently shook my head from side to side and said.
"Why would I get mad? Your words are correct. Furthermore, that's exactly the response I was hoping for from you. As you said, this weapon holds highly lethal and dangerous potential if not handled carefully. Unrestrained wars could break out, causing countless casualties. But there's no reason for you to worry. Besides producing only a limited number of units of this weapon, I've also implemented a security system. After a week, the weapon will be locked and rendered inoperable. Only I, the scientists, and a few trusted individuals know how to unlock it"
Listening to my words, Emi let a relaxed smile form on her face and looked deeply into my eyes before speaking softly.
"I understand... I'm glad to see you've taken this so seriously"
Emi said with a gentle tone, her gaze reflecting a mixture of relief and admiration. This time, I felt that Emi was truly proud of me; it was quite evident in her voice. Smiling back at Emi, I replied.
"Of course, my goal isn't to create weapons to kill enemies, but rather to create weapons that can protect the people I love"
I said, maintaining a serious gaze into Emi's eyes. Her cheeks took on a slight reddish tint upon hearing my words. In a soft tone but audible enough for me to hear, Emi responded.
"I'm glad to hear that from you, but you know, you should say those things when we're alone. The microphone is right behind you, so..."
Initially, I didn't understand what Emi was trying to convey, but as soon as the word "microphone" infiltrated my mind, I slowly turned, directing my gaze towards the soldiers. While the men displayed surprised expressions on their faces, the women showed joy, jumping and whispering to each other.
Feeling a slight embarrassment rise up my neck, I returned to the microphone. After letting out a small sigh, my gaze shifted to the soldiers, and then I began to speak.
"With that, we conclude today's presentation. As mentioned, the weapons have a safety lock that will be activated after a week of use. Please proceed to the designated location to remove these locks. I hope everyone dedicates themselves to the future of our country and our city"
I concluded my words, sending a motivational glance to the soldiers. With that, I began to step away from the podium alongside Emi. In the next moment, the commander took over the microphone to continue the conversation. He would address more details about the new weaponry and its use in battle. Since this wasn't within my purview, there was no reason for me to remain on the podium.
Walking together, the environment around us fell into silence, but it was a comfortable silence. Emi was never one to be overly talkative, but these shared moments were extremely precious to me. Each time my eyes landed on her, her beauty became even more evident. Once again, I found myself marveling at how fortunate I was to have someone as extraordinary as Emi by my side.
Since we hadn't had lunch yet, I suggested to Emi that we have lunch together in the cafeteria. She seemed to agree, accepting the idea with a smile. With that decision in mind, the two of us headed towards the cafeteria.
