As she was driving into Adam's driveway, Sasha felt her heart racing. She had a long day at campus, and it was already late. But she could tell that something wasn't right as she got closer to the door. As if Adam was waiting for her, there was an odd tension in the air.
She saw Adam sitting on the couch with his eyes fixed on her when she opened the door. Like a child waiting for a present, he had an eager and anxious expression.
As he stood to greet her, he said, "Sasha, you're finally home."
"What's happening?" As a knot formed in her stomach, she asked.
Adam did not respond immediately. Instead, he asked her to sit next to him and made a gesture. Sasha complied, her thoughts racing with all the possible outcomes of this strange encounter.
Adam said in a grave tone, "Sasha, I'm afraid you've broken one of our rules."
"What rule?" With a heavy heart, Sasha asked.
Adam said, "The one about coming home late without telling me," with a firm but gentle tone.
