Chapter 1 - Passengers on a Rainy Night

A clap of thunder split the night sky, the bright lightning slicing through the dark clouds like a blade. A heavy rain poured down upon the sleeping city, swallowing up the last shreds of warmth. It was deep into the night, the old city district almost completely shrouded in rain and fog, the only sound the pitter-patter of the rain.

Chen was squatting in front of an old building, looking at the taxi washed by the heavy rain. Half an hour before midnight, such a rainy night should have no business. He sneered and took out a cigarette to light it slowly. Suddenly, a dull sound came from the building behind, as if something had fallen heavily on the ground.

Chen was naturally startled, and the cigarette butt fell into the accumulated water and was extinguished. He turned around and looked into the building, thinking he saw a figure walking by. He put the cigarette back in his pocket and slowly walked over, resting his hand on the wall and looking into the darkness of the building without any light.

The building was dark, the concrete floor was covered with dirt, the four-story building seemed uninhabited, and the sound of rats crawling over could be heard. Chen squinted his eyes, trying to see the situation inside more clearly, but he could only vaguely see that there was a square outline at the door of a certain room, which seemed to be open, facing the deepest room on the ground floor.

It might not be much, but near this object, there seemed to be two eerie shadows on the ground that seemed to reflect something, and there was an eerie sense of oppression in the air.

"Anyone?" Chen shouted into the room, only to be met with an echo. He walked out into the hallway, feeling the cold wind carrying the rain, so cold it made his bones ache. Shivering, he opened his mobile flashlight, frightened yet curious.

The abandoned floor was somewhat empty, with rainwater leaking in many places, and the rain hit the square object, making a tinkling sound. Chen's heartbeat quickened a bit, he tiptoed closer and saw clearly, it was a large suitcase, black, half a man tall.

When opened, the suitcase was filled with a rusty smell. He crouched down and reached out to touch the inside of the opened suitcase, feeling a sticky sensation that made him slightly surprised. He turned his hand over and found it was...blood!

He quickly stepped back and noticed a trail of blood leading to the deepest room. He lifted his phone and shined it in the direction of the blood, planning to take a closer look. The light flickered a few times before his phone went dark.

"Just now there was still a lot of battery left." Chen looked around and pressed the start button. But the phone was as if it had broken down, no longer providing even a glimmer of light. The eerie feeling of being watched from behind came again, but nothing stirred. The dim rain mist seemed to darken the two faint lights in the room, and a vague silhouette seemed to be rolling on the ground in front of the door. Although his phone was out of power, he still had a lighter in his pocket. He slowly walked in, reaching for his pocket as he did.

Crack! Another flash illuminated the window, faintly revealing the jumble of objects in the deepest corner of the room before the world was plunged back into darkness.

With a crisp sound, a lighter burst out a tiny spark of flame, illuminating the space within several meters. Finally, Chen could clearly make out the object rolling on the floor - it was a woman's head, one pair of eyes staring directly at him, her mouth half open and her twisted expression still bearing the pain of her life.

Not only that, but limbs were scattered all over the room, even near the luggage. It was as if they were coming out of it.

Clatter, clatter, a sound came from behind him.

The head of the woman on the floor somehow, rolled around and came back into Chen 's view. A slight smile was on the corner of her lips, it seemed that she was smiling...

"Ahh!!"

Chen threw away the lighter in his hand, turned and ran away without looking back. Was everything that just happened a nightmare or reality, true or illusion? He opened the car door, started the engine, and drove away from the old building. Chen sighed deeply. At this moment, the car radio changed from a lot of noise to a signal, and the hostess's soft voice narrated the opening remarks.

"Have you heard the story of the fox's gratitude?

"The starving fox accidentally fell into the tank while trying to steal food, but instead of being punished, he was given a piece of meat and released back into the mountain forest. Since then, the fox has run to the ranger's hut every three to five days, bringing frogs and sparrows. This is the story of the fox's gratitude in folk tales. "

"There is the fox's gratitude and there is the ghost's revenge. Revenge has a way of coming back, and here at Supernatural Radio Station, I'm your host of Midnight Ghost Talk. Tonight we're going to bring you a true story of ghostly revenge. So turn off your lights, prick up your ears, and get ready to be scared!"

After such an experience, Chen would never dare to listen to the radio again. As he reached out to change the station, he suddenly froze. He had never listened to the car radio in the evening before, so when did he turn on it?

Then a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating everything. Chen suddenly saw in the rearview mirror that there was another pale man sitting in the back seat of the car, closing his eyes and sleeping silently.

The host's voice echoed in the night, "At the beginning of tonight's show, we will read a message from a listener who wanted to tell her beloved, 'Even if you kill me, I won't leave you...'".

Chen drove, noticing the passenger in the backseat who had opened his eyes, seemingly confused by the words he had heard.

"I will find you again. When the driver sees my corpse, I will already be following him...Come, don't hide. Let's go home together..."

The female host's voice became colder, word by word, as if she was embodying the woman in the message.

"What a terrible broadcast tonight," said the man in the back seat, his voice shaking and suppressed, with a hint of hidden ferocity, "Take me to the outskirts of town, you won't be short of money, and no questions asked."

It was a person... Chen let out a slight sigh of relief, probably because he had caught the bus when he entered the building.

The voice on the radio sounded as if the host was talking directly to him. Chen reached out to tune the frequency, but the voice on the radio suddenly became strange and high.

"Dear driver, thank you for helping me find my love again!"

Chen's pupils suddenly contracted, and a chill ran through his body. Was this just a coincidence? He looked up at the rearview mirror, only to see the man's seat cushion filled with the bodies and remains of the collapsed from that building. The man seemed oblivious, licking his lips.

Chen's mind suddenly flashed a bright light - what he had seen in the old building was a murder, and the strange broadcast from the car radio gave the whole event a strong supernatural feel. No doubt, the passenger in front of him had something to do with the murder in the building...and something seemed to be missing among the pieces of flesh.

Chen panicked, then felt something round under his feet. He looked down and his scalp tingled - it was the head of the woman he had seen earlier! It was rolling at his feet, her creepy smile still on her face.

"Ahhhhhhh!"

At the same time, the male passenger in the back seat seemed to catch a glimpse of the terrifying things around him and screamed in fear. Amidst the man's frantic screams, Chen slammed on the brakes, forgetting that the car had been driving at high speed in the rain late at night.

With a sharp screech of friction, Chen felt a sudden jolt and a dizzying spin.

Just before he lost consciousness, a voice seemed to ring in his head.

"Will the taxi driver involved in this be able to escape this real horror story tonight? Let's wait and see."
