Chapter 11 - Confidants and Adversaries

You look down at the motionless body underneath you, they wear light blue overalls but most of it is covered in blood. Their chest slowly rises and falls, a clear inkling of them still alive.

A familiar redolence fills your nostrils. Without warning, you find yourself in the middle of an ongoing battle. Around you are armored soldiers, wearing the same armor as you. It glistens in the midday sun as its occupants battle. Their opponents are clad in their equally resplendent armor, unfortunately, it does little to prevent their demise as they are struck down. The group wearing the same armor as you move with inhumane speed and efficiency, almost like apparitions.

The vision fades. A shudder from the still-afloat edifice quickly clears your sight. Looking back, a pool of blood has formed from the stump. Blood lightly trickles down the remains of the leg. You get off the body and slowly pry the door open.

A wave of heat pours into the room from that gap alone. Powering through the heat, you scan the hallway. The two humanoid entities from before are nowhere to be seen and there are no signs of a struggle, only a light trail of blood seemingly from the unconscious figure.

" Step back, " Ahesdorf orders. She moves in your direction, taking care to avoid the pool of blood. A soft, squelching thud is heard as Draalsar hurls the leg away with ease, a trail of blood being the only thing that proved it was ever in his jaws.

She performs a strange gesture with her hand and brushes her hand against the door. It glows slightly with a dull cyan light. She hums as she looks to be in a deep trance.

You look towards Valindra who shrugs. Before any of you can say anything, her trance-like state ends.

" By the gods," she murmurs, " Valindra, head down to the lower decks to see who needs help, you go with her. "

Before Valindra could voice out her concerns, Cleric Ahresdorf leaves the room. She sighs before leaving as well.

"Follow me! " She races down a flight of stairs, avoiding debris and stray sparks.

Once you reach the end, you are met with the sight of chaos. Multiple people covered in varying levels of blood, with some being other than red, lay scattered around the place, groaning in pain while others try to help. A few are not even moving at all. Valindra wastes little time and rushes to the side of the closest and begins to tend to their wounds.

You mimic her action and move to one. A young human male with his midriff covered in blood. He groans in pain as he clutches at what may be the wound. Prying away his hand could make the situation worse. You take a deep breath and place a hand on his shoulder.

His eyes shoot open and a look of horror washes over him. You give him your best attempt at a smile and point toward his wound, hoping he gets the message. He does but is reluctant to remove his hand. After a while and a bit of patience, he does.

" Please," he begs, " I don't want to die. Please. "

The look of fear in his eyes is pronounced but you reassure him by patting his shoulder. You do not know how but you are able to carefully remove the piece of clothing around the wound and wipe the blood with a clean piece of rag made from part of your apparel.

The wound is a deep one and you spot something sticking out of it. Removing it might make him bleed out but it might also make things easier. As you contemplate what to do, you see the ring from earlier. It now pulsates with light. A gut feeling tells you it might be the key.

You focus on it and another vision fills your mind. On a bed lies a man, his left arm is gone, and he cries out in pain. Around him are a group of white-clothed men and women. They try to placate him but it is to no avail. Suddenly your body moves on its own and stops near the man. Your hands stretch out and begin to glow with soft blue light. There is a flash and the man's arm is back to normal. The vision ends.

You look at the young one before you. His eyes are filled with pain and a tinge of regret. With one hand still on his shoulder, you bring the other hand close to the wound.

Your hand begins to radiate with blue light. You concentrate on the wound, unsure of what you are doing but you still concentrate. A few seconds later and the wound is completely healed. A clang is heard as a jagged piece of metal falls next to you.

The man looks at you with utter shock but you ignore it and help him to his feet. He stumbles for a moment before standing upright. You point to Valindra and move on to the next person needing aid. Again the light manifests and their respective wounds are healed as pieces of debris materialize next to them. Soon everyone has been taken care of and stands around Valindra who gives out orders to the group.

Soon they disperse with some of the men following her as she makes her way to you. She explains that there was an explosion a few levels down and the suppressant system kicked in. Unfortunately, a second one occurred on this level and they think they might know who caused it.

" What does this person look like? " She asks one of the men.

" Average height, for an orc at least, " he replies. " That means they'll be around six feet. But we can't only rely on that. "

" Excuse me, " a familiar voice calls out. Everyone turns to see a young maiden, the one from before. Her clothes are covered in grime and oil.

" I think I might be able to help," she says in a soft voice.

" Well? " The man looks at her. " Spill what you know lass. "

" Before the incident, I came across a member of the maintenance team in the engine room. They were mumbling something about this being the last time. "

The men share a look amongst themselves. It seems they do not know who she may be referring to.

" Is there anything else you can tell us? " Valindra questions.

" He had a scar running down his left cheek and wore a topaz ring, " she replies.

A man clicks his tongue before sighing.

" I know who she speaks of, " he says in a defeated tone.

" Who? " Everyone turns to face him.

" My brother. "
