Chapter 18 - Autumnshade Clearing

The lands inside the 40,000 units were grassy and mostly flat. It was surrounded by trees and bordered by a river to the east and an abandoned military fortress to the west. Beyond the river were large corn and wheat farms.

<\item Created: Autumnshade Resort! />

Remus created a compound comprising of a workshop area, an inn for travelers, a shop for magic swords and other items, a hot spring, a library and a training arena for practicing swordsmanship.

He also built roads to connect Autumnshade with Ibdan and Oldtown while Andrea, Gregory and his Automatons: Robot guardians that he built out of Orc Steel, hunted all the monsters in the area.

On the day of the grand opening, only a small crowd flocked to Autumnshade to purchase magic swords. Even though Remus was disappointed by the meagre numbers, he wasn't disappointed for long because the initial crowd spread the news about the resort and the size of the visitors kept increasing day by day.

Remus created robot guards to keep things safe and orderly and a robot crew to clean and maintain the resort.

Unfortunately, Gregory broke some bad news to Remus.

"I've been accepted into the Blue Angels adventuring company," he said. "I don't want to seem ungrateful because you've done alot for me but I need your permission to leave."

Remus placed his hand on Gregory's shoulder.

"It's alright, we're still family," Remus said. "I'll still be here if you need me."

Even though those were the words that came out of his mouth, Remus wanted to rip Gregory's head from his shoulders for abandoning him again even though there were very few people that he could personally trust but he did a good job of hiding his homicidal thoughts behind a nice smile.

13 days after the grand opening, there were notable visits from Baldr, the head of the Adventuring guild, Nimir, the head of the merchant's guild, Lucan, the head of Golden Order and Merlin, the head of Red Maelstrom but 4 days after the visits started, they abruptly ended.

After being in business for 2 months everything was beginning to change for the worse.

Annabelle came to Remus one day with bad news.

"Our sales are still good but they've fallen by 35%," she said. "The top guilds aren't patronising us like they used to."

"What seems to be the problem?" Remus asked.

"I used my contacts at the guild and they informed me that the King is putting pressure behind the scenes to discourage the top guilds from buying our products," Annabelle said. "He has a bottomless supply of gold and no top guild wants to lose their lucrative contracts."

Before Remus could answer, Andrea interrupted "General Tacitus is here to see you," she said.

Just then, General Tacitus walked in.

"General, it's good to see you," Remus said with surprise. "Why have you come so far from Newtown?"

"I'm just Tacitus now," he said. "No longer a General."

"What happened?" Annabelle inquired.

"The King sees you as a rival to his power and was unhappy when he learnt that I let you into the Armoury," he replied. "Especially with the theft of the Lion's claw which was a National Treasure."

Remus shifted uncomfortably.

"I'm sorry," Remus said. "Why would he do that to you?"

"To be frank, it's not him. The Queen-Mother is the one running the Kingdom behind the scenes," Tacitus said. "But don't worry about it. This is the kick I needed in order to get off my ass and make an impact. Have you given any thought to our last conversation?"

"I don't think I want to be King, if that's what you're asking about."

"I don't believe you have a choice anymore," he said.

"What are you taking about?" Remus asked.

"The Queen has convinced King Belsarius that you are the biggest threat to his reign," Tacitus said. "She has swayed the top tier adventuring companies and Guild leadership against you. If you don't act now, then she will find a way to destroy you."

Remus gave his words some thought.

"First things first, you need a job," Remus said. "Since Gregory left, I'm in need of a new Head of security to command my battle robots."

"I would be honoured," Tacitus replied. "But what are you going to do about the Queen-Mother?"

"She doesn't have to look for me or pull any strings," Remus said. "I'm going to her. I need you to set up a meeting."
