It took me to a house and sat me down on a couch. I did not open my eyes and pretended to be asleep. I could not afford to be thrown out on a cold night. It felt it cover me with a blanket. It was so warm. I told myself not to get comfortable. "It will kick me out once he sees my crimson-red eyes".
Morning came no sooner than I had expected. I reluctantly opened my eyes when it said "Good morning". It looked shocked to see the color of my eyes. I did not want to be insulted so I just got up and started walking to the door. I thanked him for saving me but just as I was about to take my leave a voice stopped me. "Where are you going?". I was struck dumb unsure of how to answer. Did that question mean that it wanted me to stay? Hadn't he seen my eyes?
He walked me back to the room I was in and although I wasn't sure why, I told him everything, and as I talked tears came out of my eyes. He wiped the tears from my face and I stared at him. He was kind and gentle...nothing like my 'mother'. "Your mother must have been crazy" he suddenly said while stroking my hair. "I don't know why anyone would do such things".
He tilted my head and stared into my eyes with a strange look on his face. "I think your eyes are beautiful and unique", he said. I had never been spoken too so nicely before. It made me happy.
He asked my name and I said, Devil. He laughed, thinking I was joking. My eyes told him otherwise. " What!, you're serious... she named you Devil", he asked still disbelieving.
"Yes? 'D' for short", I answered. I didn't know a lot about the world. I did not understand why he was laughing, I had never even heard a laugh before. After coming to terms with my name, I asked him for his, though I'm not sure why.
He said his name was Dave and that I could call him dad. He was young, I think the same age as my ex-mother. 26. He looked into my eyes and swore to never let anyone hurt me again. I don't know why but I believed him. I had no reason not to.
As we talked more a small thing came into the room. It was a bit taller than me but it looked like him. "What is that?" I asked curiously. He is my son, a boy. I repeated the new word, a boy'. He said that his son was a boy. I was a girl, my mother was a woman and he is a man.
I ended up staying with them. I had to do a lot of work and training, but I endured it because I knew it would make him happy with me.
He thought me how to fight, shoot even how tell if somebody was lying by body language alone. However, I got a private tutor or school-related work. It wasn't all work though. He let me play with his son David. His son, my brother was so nice to me. He even promised to always keep me safe and in the heat of the moment, I promised the same. Dave told me that he worked for the government, as an agent of sorts. I found that interesting. I loved my new life with them, my family. It was like a beautiful dream. But all dreams must come to an end. I stayed with them for 12 years and in one day I lost it all.

One night I was awakened by a loud sound. It was glass breaking. I curiously walked into the living room. I was terrified by what I found. My adopted father, Dave who welcomed me into his home and treated me like family despite the odd color of my eyes... He was kneeling. Three masked men surrounded him. I could see blood dripping from the side of his head and nose.
He noticed me and shifted his eyes from side to side. It was a signal for me to run, but I couldn't. Fear paralyzed my entire body. Then out of nowhere, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned my whole body around, ready to fight for my life, but there was no need. It was David.
I hugged him tight and he hugged back, he whispered to me saying everything would be okay. He lead me upstairs to our dad's room and grabbed a bag filled with money, a phone, and some clothes. I was so scared but his smile reassured me.
We got to the back door but the intruders were waiting for us. David opened the door and they all came rushing towards us. David immediately shut the door and stood in front of it to stood them from entering. "D!" he screamed, 'Run, I can't hold it forever!".
I didn't want to leave him. I couldn't. I wouldn't. But before I could open my mouth to protest he threw the bag at me.
"Go!" he said tears falling from his eyes. "I don't want anyone to hurt you 'D', I'm begging you. Run!"
I couldn't refuse so I ran. swiftly moving down the stairs, I turned my head and saw the lifeless body of Dave. My tears wouldn't stop flowing. "I'm sorry" I whispered to him as I ran into the darkness. I didn't know what would happen to my beloved brother and I honestly didn't want to know. All I wanted was REVENGE.
