Chereads / Rabid: Towards a Different World / Chapter 2 - The New Moon

Chapter 2 - The New Moon

"What the...fuck?" I muttered, shaken by the strange scene unfolding before me.

There, in the far sky, was a visible asteroid - larger than the moon, and it was moving towards it. As I watched, the two celestial bodies met, and I was momentarily blinded by a flash of light.

"AGH!!!"

I let out a grunt, closing my eyes and shielding them with my hands. I stumbled backwards, tripping over someone's foot, and I fell to the ground with a muffled thud. As I lay there, I realized that I couldn't hear anything. I tried to open my eyes, but for some strange reason, I couldn't.

Panic started to set in as I felt someone step on my body. I reacted quickly, grabbing their legs and tossing them aside. My eyes were still closed, and I couldn't see anything, only darkness.

I was about to go crazy, but then, I heard a loud ringing in my ears, and my vision suddenly returned. I was in my classroom, alone, and the sky outside was no longer blue, but a brilliant, blinding white. The moon, somehow, was still there, but it was larger and emitting a red, glowing light.

Suddenly, a bloodcurdling scream interrupted my thoughts, and I sprang into action, searching for the source of the disturbance.

I rushed out of the classroom, my heart pounding with fear and uncertainty. What was happening? My mind raced as I frantically searched for the source of the commotion. And then, I saw it.

My heart skipped a beat as my eyes fell upon a horrifying spectacle. In front of me stood a horror, a creature unlike any I had ever seen before. Its skin was a sickly green hue, slick with an oily substance that seemed to glow in the eerie red light. Its eyes were black pits that seemed to stare into my very soul, and a long, jagged maw filled with razor-sharp teeth gaped open as it ravenously devoured one of my classmates.

The monster's limbs were long and spindly, ending in claws that glinted in the strange light. Its movements were quick and agile, but also jerky and spastic, as if it were struggling to keep its balance. As it devoured my classmates, I could hear the crunching of bones and the wet, smacking sounds of its jaws. The smell of blood and rotting flesh filled my nostrils, and I felt my knees begin to buckle beneath me.

A being so unspeakably terrifying that I could barely stand to look at it. Yet, I couldn't tear my gaze away, horrified and transfixed by the sight of it. As I stood there, frozen in terror, I could only pray that I would somehow make it out of this alive.

"H..he..pl.lp-"

My classmate's voice was weak and trembling as he saw me, I was frozen in fear and couldn't bring myself to move. The monster's gaze was piercing through my very soul, even as it continued to devour its latest prey.

As soon as it finished, the monster nonchalantly tossed the remains aside and began to slowly approach me.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck," I whispered to myself, and then I gathered all my courage and strength, turned on my heel and ran as fast as I could.

"Hah...ha...hph..."

I panted as I ran, thinking Kaede. I quickly dug out my phone and called her. After a few rings, she finally answered.

[W..here..are yhou now?]

[What do you mean?]

[I..fhuckin said whehre are you..?]

[You're breathing so heavy, I'm in the toilet right now…don't try something weird,]

[..pfhuck.]

I muttered, then increased the volume on my phone before putting it in my shirt pocket, close to my chest.

[Dhon't close..this chall..and-]

I gasped, as I almost lost my balance because I almost stumbled.

[..and, leave at that..place.]

I could feel my organs jostling, my lungs rapidly expanding and contracting in a desperate attempt to keep up with my frenzied pace.

I didn't dare look back as I sprinted towards the nearest women's bathroom. Finally, I caught sight of a restroom, marked with a pink sign and the symbol for the female gender.

However, before I could reach it, I tripped and fell with a loud thud, the ground colliding with my jaw. I groaned in pain, struggling to get back up. After a few moments, I finally managed to stand and check over my shoulder, breathing a sigh of relief to find nothing pursuing me.

I quickly made my way inside the restroom. I hastened my steps after I was in, calling out for Kaede with a voice that was low.

"..Kaede?"

After a few moments, I could hear a faint sound coming from one of the stalls. Despite my mounting fear, I approached the stall and with a steady hand, I grasped the latch and swiftly pulled it open.

And there was Kaede, seated upon the toilet with her THAT lowered to reveal her smooth, creamy thighs. My heart was pounding in my chest as I gazed upon her in wonder, my mind still struggling to process the surreal events of the past few minutes.

"What...!" Kaede gasped in surprise, her eyes widening as she saw me. "Aah—"

I moved quickly, placing my hand over her mouth to stifle her cries before she could scream.

"...I'm sorry, I-I can't explain now," I whispered, trying to soothe Kaede as she struggled against me, her punches landing weakly on my chest.

"Um.. what's going on?"

"Just come with me," I urged, releasing her and gesturing for her to follow as I began to make my way out of the restroom. Kaede quickly dressed and followed closely behind, her eyes fixed on me in concern.

The once noisy and chaotic school was now eerily quiet. I didn't want to think about the monsters that might have devoured all the students. The sky was still a brilliant white with the red light of the moon shining down on us. We quickly made our way to the school gate without running into any trouble.

I was relieved, but still on edge. I didn't know if there was just one monster or multiple. Either way, it was dangerous. We made our way out of the school and I decided to head home.

"Where are you taking me?" Kaede panted as she ran beside me.

"Home," I replied simply.

"Why?"

"There's something dangerous going on."

"Are you sure you're not just losing it?" Kaede asked, her voice shaking with fear.

"No," I replied firmly. "I'm not."

We kept running until we finally reached our house. But the city was too quiet, there was no sign of life - no humans, animals, cars, bicycles, not even the wind. We were both drenched in sweat as we finally arrived at the entrance door. I tried to open it slowly, but it wouldn't budge.

"What are you doing?" Kaede asked.

"Trying to open the door."

"Oh, right," she said, "Dad is working today so he locked the door."

I had completely forgotten about that in my panic. We decided to use the back door and thankfully, I remembered that dad always keeps a spare key on the mat.

With a gentle turn of the key in the lock, I opened the backdoor to our home. I swiftly secured it behind us, though I knew that it would likely be of little use against any danger that may be lurking outside.

As we stepped deeper into the house, I could feel Kaede gripping tightly onto the fabric of my shirt. The closer we got to the living room, the stronger the nauseating odor became. It was a mixture of rot and decay, with a sickly sweet and rancid undertone.

The smell of putrefaction was unmistakable, filling the air and causing bile to rise in the back of my throat.
