Chapter 21 - Growing

Woah, doesn't he look a bit different? Right away, we went to Tobin's place to see how he was holding up. He's fine--in fact, he is doing better than he was before. The most notable difference was the faint glow of his skin. Nothing changed in terms of color but it looks like he put a lot of moisturizer on for this.

"It's somehow weird that we get to see you in normal clothes. You'd be in a uniform for school or one of your part-time usually." Choccy teased.

"Ha! Now that you mention it." and I jumped right in with her.

"Guys, can you please be serious for a moment? Me right here is sick, you know?" To our relief though, Tobin seemed to be fine for the most part. Maybe he's just bewildered by the fact that he is now a superhuman.

"You're fine if you can smile like that...well, more importantly--powers. Did you gain any?" I asked one of--if not the most important question of all. We were all curious about this, given that we saw Kolin's might first-hand.

Tobin pondered for a second, "Nothing for now, but I do feel a little lighter," as he said that, he stretched his arms, rotating his shoulders. A flicker lit in his eyes, "--oh yeah, I was able to crush a boulder with my grip too. If that counts."

"Y-yea, that definitely counts." Sypher, who came along with us with her insistence, added.

"Oum, as long as you're okay..." Lux, of course, is with us as well, squirming like worm sprinkled with salt---the salt being Tobin.

"Well, now that I know you're fine, I should probably go home now." I said to Tobin, oh right--"Ah, there's a student orientation next week. You guys are coming, right?" I remembered that the school wanted to gather the Juniors for an orientation.

"Oh, yeah, that's that. Of course, we're going." Choccy replied.

"Alright, then I'll see you guys there."

...

Fwooo

It feels like every time, I go home, I always sigh out of exhaustion. I mean, I can't really help it sometimes because I am tired.

Ding Dong

My mom answered almost immediately after I pressed the doorbell. "Oh hey Mom," I gave her a tight hug and just went in through the house gate thereafter. I paused my steps, however, for I saw something that boggled even my already boggled-enough mind.

"H-hey, Mom? Isn't that the plant you were planting just a couple of weeks ago?" I recognized it since there were red streaks like a crack and they pulse from time to time. The thing, however, is that it is now a big tree almost fifteen feet tall. I know some plants grow fast, but in a couple of weeks...from a sapling to that?

"That is that one, yes. It grew up fast, huh?" My Mom seemed oblivious, but there was an expression on her face that I hadn't really seen before. I'm not too sure how to react to this one.

"Isn't that kinda weird?" I asked.

She chuckled, probably amused by my expression as usual, "Yes, it is, but what can I do?"

"Take it down?"

"Hmmm..." We stood in front of the tree as Mom pondered. A breeze passed by rattling the tree--bright red petals of the flowers growing on it fell down. The wind cooled my beating heart down.

"Well, this thing is quite sentimental to me, you know? It grew when your brother was born after all."

"Eh?" Wait, hold on. If that is the case, that might be something magical. So I stared at it, trying to grasp if there was that familiar sensation of mana around it.

"Urghh." I grabbed my head as I felt a bit dizzy.

"Bevie, are you okay?" With concern laced on her face, she caressed my back and held me up.

"Yeah, just a bit tired I think."

"Let's go inside."

As I went inside, something she said bothered me, "You meant it only grew now?"

"Yes?"

Does she know? Why is she not bothered? In more than two decades that she knew Kolin, do they really not have any idea of what he is capable of? "Mom...?"

Should I tell her?

"Yes, hon?"

"I..."

"Hmmm?" She looked confused as she waited for my response.

I probably shouldn't.

"I'm kind of hungry."

"Ah, perfect then. I just made lunch, you should eat with me." I knew she knew that I lied, but still acted like that was not the case.

"Oh, Dad's not home?"

"Nope, he said he will meet up with some clients. He probably won't be home until night."

"I see."

Sigh

Am I putting too much thought into this? Kolin's a mage, and somehow, he brought a deity with him from his home Auel. In an encounter with a friend, he unintentionally awakened the same powers he has in him.

Sounds about right.

We quietly ate our lunch before I went up to my room and lazed around. I scrolled through the internet with my phone until I dozed off without even realizing it.

...

I woke up to the noise of wind and rain, the smell of earth invaded my nose through the open windows. "Did I leave it open like that?" I wondered.

I got up to close it, but then I saw a glow in the garden. "The tree."

Hmmm? Why does it feel like this happened before?

"So it is magical," I exclaimed as I got up from my bed to look out my window. A breeze blew through, making my hair dance with it. It splashed me with misty rainwater. 'Ah right, it was when I found those books.'

But my grogginess got the best of me, so I shut the window, and continued my sleep. Who cares? This is the only decent I'll probably get.

Rustle Rustle

"What is it again?!"

By the side of my window is a branch of a different tree, and there I found a creature. I flinched as I tried to close the curtains, but it spoke.

"Hey, Beverly! It's me, Caner!" It was the voice of a child at the age of seven.

"Ah fu--!" I fell straight on my bum as a creepy-looking kid popped out. "Dang! Caner?" Oh right, he turned into a child, "W-what are you doing here?"

"Long story, can you open your window?"

I slid the window open, and the same person, with the same outfit albeit he's way smaller now--cuter--popped in.

"Heya! Haven't seen you in a while!"

"Urgh, does being a deity of life require you to be this lively? It's midnight, you know?"

"Midnight? It's not even 10 pm." He smirked.

"Eh?" I looked at my clock and it was true, it was 9:37 pm exactly.

"Damn, you're that tired."

"Tch."

"Well, anyway, Kolin kicked me out for destroying his PC."

"What? How did that even--you know what? Where are you gonna stay then? You can't stay in my room."

"Kolin's?" He scrunched up his face as he suggested sleeping in Kolin's room.

"I guess that won't be too much of a problem." I sighed, damn, a younger brother this time?!

"Yippee! Thanks, Bev."

"Sure sure, now get out of my goddamn room!" I threw a pillow at him and he couldn't dodge on time so it smacked him in the face.

"Puwahh! Alright, jeez!"

Is he not a deity from another world? I find it strange that he acts so American.

"I have had enough of this day," I say as I plop down on my bed, and fell asleep.
