From my perspective they are both good, you have to understand what they said again and again before you see the flaw.
These were good debates, which means that both of them did well with their rebuttals. Ms. Nayeli has been constantly saying that we can just punish criminals in any other way than killing. She also said that there are many ways but how come she only gave one and that was to let them serve in prison their entire life? It's a kind of punishment that is way harsher than the death penalty because it'll be like torture to them.
That's all she gave, so some of her words seem to lack thoughts and ideas.
Saphira's rebuttals put pressure but Nayeli could have gotten over that by saying 'If the death penalty is approved as the punishment for criminals, for example, who committed murder, then wouldn't you also be a criminal for killing the criminal since he/she was also a human being?'. Nayeli could have reversed the situation with that statement. But still, well done. She did a good job.
Saphira, every time I judge a debate especially when she was one of the representatives, it's always so hard to point out flaws in her rebuttals. She always makes sure to intimidate them with the words that come out of her mouth. She always makes sure that the table will never turn and that's a great strategy for a debater. I would love to point out any flaw that I can find but, I have none so yeah.
That was her other side, I wonder why she didn't pursue the degree she wanted, I can feel that it was her passion.
"I can see that some of you had a great privilege in the future," Professor said. "They both have a point, but I want another perspective from anyone, I want to know if anyone can guess my point."
"Yes, Ms. Hechanova."
"I do disagree with approving the death penalty here in the Philippines, with the law process system in here. there are cases wherein innocents are proven guilty without proper trial and right shreds of evidence." I said.
"Can you give specific details Ms?" He asked again.
"Because the justice system here in the Philippines is a mess," I said.
A f*cking mess.
"There are cases like self-defense in rape wherein he brutally killed his rapist due to fear and anxiety does she deserve to die too? because there is a high possibility that he will lose the case, especially if the family of the rapist he killed is powerful." I started.
"What I'm saying is that 'the death penalty' is not applicable here because even if there are other perspectives in a situation it doesn't justify the system here in our country. For example, about the 'War on Drugs' that the past president declared. Some innocents were killed without any proper evidence if they are guilty or not and what happened to the police officers that did the killing? the trial went on for more than a year but just very few of them are jailed, also in this war on drugs people in the lower cast system are the targets because they are said they're the 'pushers' but the people who make and distributes them that makes money up to thousands or millions, have you seen any of them in the news? its always the 'powerless' and poor people are the ones who suffer for this injustice."
"How can it be if the death penalty is implemented, maybe those at the bottom will be affected." After I finished I could feel the professor's admiration based on his eyes. My other block mates even applauded.
The others were also recited but I didn't listen anymore because I was hungry. All my block mates finished reciting and the professor said goodbye, he praised us again before leaving our classroom.
The bell rang indicating that it was vacant time.
"Let's celebrate outside! We don't have class in the afternoon either." One of my block mates shouted, Saph agreed and winked. Hmm, it looks like she has gotten along with the others. I packed my things and we went out together.
"Your rebuttals are very good," Nayeli said with admiration and came between us and Saphira, well I don't know her name yet maybe I will know that too.
"By the way, Rin Meira Ledoux Nayeli." She said and shook her hand. "Call me Rin if you want to." She said, smiling.
"Keyu." I also smiled back at her. "Keirra Hechanova."
I hope my stay at this university will be really good.
