The night brought a cold chill to his cabin later that night as Derrick impatiently looked at his fireplace knowing he shouldn't go into the woods, but his wolf had been nagging him constantly. The flames kept flickering as he tried to drink away the urge to leave, but Derrick couldn't resist the want to see his prey that evening.
He had tried to stay within his home that night, but his whole boy wanted to see her just for a moment as if it could calm his heart. He also had tried to suppress it, but he eventually opened his door running toward his chosen. Suddenly a scent caught his attention.
Sniffing the air as he ran, a low thunderous growl escaped his chest causing his body to let his wolf take control to find a captivating smell filling the woods. His mind was now blank as the animal was in full control running quickly toward the spot that seemed to be drawing him near. He had never smelled something so delicious and he had to find it.
Running through the trees, the creature made it close to the middle of the woods walking toward the beautiful tree that he often used as a guide when he was a young child as he explored his home. It was a different color and was an easy landmark that bought him comfort knowing he wouldn't be lost.
But he didn't feel comfort tonight.
His golden eyes kept flashing red as he sniffed the dirt knowing now that the scent belonged to the beautiful woman he watched daily for the past year. Even though she was just recently decided as his chosen, he had found her earlier and never wanted to leave her. But right now, he was felt upset at the thought that the girl had entered his domain.
Anger started to fill him wondering how stupid the human girl was to enter his woods when it was forbidden. She could have died before he even had the chance to kill her himself.
Suddenly his eyes opened red and the wolf started to run as fast as he could toward the little cottage knowing that it was much too late for the family to be awake. His wolf needed to see her ever since he caught whiff of her scent. The thought of her being hurt caused him turmoil and right now he didn't see any logic.
Right now He needed to watch her body breathe so he could sleep peacefully that night knowing she was safe. Why he needed this? He had no idea. But he couldn't control himself now until he saw her.
Approaching the home of the sleeping beauty, Derrick transformed back into his human form standing outside the window he often saw her sitting at. He stayed quiet pondering how her broke the law entering the human lands, but he felt no guilt or remorse. After another moment, He carefully opened a window connecting to her room.
Slowly, he stepped on the hard floor that had no comfort in any way making him internally frown. Far away, one could tell the family lived by small means, but being inside the home, Derrick had his heart prick at how little the family truly had.
This feeling made him furrow his brows unable to understand why he felt any sympathy for a lowly human. This wasn't natural for him and his kind and he knew he needed to kill her before more immoral thoughts continued to swirl inside him.
He heard movement to his left making his head snap with his eyes hard until he looked toward the bed where a lovely figure laid. And suddenly, his eyes softened.
Derrick cautiously walked close to her kneeling down studying the strange creature before him.
Sophia was sleeping deeply making Derrick have the opportunity to watch her sleeping face that seemed to entice him noting she was extremely beautiful. Picking up his arm, the man reach his hand to move part of the hair on Sophia's face to her side so he didn't have anything blocking his view.
Most wolves were beautiful to the human eye making it rare for a creature to find any joy in a human appearance. They were often ugly and disgusting to look upon. But Sophia slept like an angel as she breathed slowly while her chest gently moved. Something inside Derrick was drawn to her wanting to protect her so she could sleep peacefully the entire night.
He saw her up close for the first time noting every detail about her starting with her silky black hair down to her porcelain skin. His eyes continued to skim past her till they landed on a cloth covering her arm.
Suddenly, his eyes narrowed as he noticed a fresh wound under the cloth immediately removing it noticing something that did not please him.
Seeing the flesh on her arm torn, he felt a rumble start in his chest wanting to find the source of what caused her pain.
'KILL'
His wolf was speaking low and deadly. But it was not directed toward Sophia. Derrick wanted to kill the person that harmed her.
'KILL HIM. KILL HIM NOW.'
This time Derrick froze realizing he was wanting to protect the woman he needed to kill.
"What have you done to me?" Derrick whispered as he continued to stare at the girl who had captivated him from the instant he saw her. He was suppose to kill her and it wasn't something he could stop.
He knelt down staying close to her side even while his eyes continued to change colors. But even his wolf wanted to feel close to the girl making him feel oddly happy in her presence. But a frown formed on his face when he realized he would be the cause of her gruesome death in a few days because of him. The idea of someone hurting his prey upset him greatly.
"You need to leave."
Derrick lifted his head toward the doorway seeing an older lady watching him intently. He noticed her blue eyes that were similar to the sleeping beauty he was next to.
"You have no business on our lands or with my daughter. I am merely warning you, but I will not let you hurt her. There are laws!" She whispered in a threatening way when she realized the wolfman was watching her daughter rather too closely. Ruby stood with a knife in her hand looking at Derrick threatening.
Derrick stood up not intimated by the woman in the slightest. And even though he could kill her easily, he restrained himself.
"I mean no harm." He responded with a warm thick voice making Ruby somewhat shudder. She knew the Wolfmen had a way of making humans addicted to them, but she didn't want to fall short.
"Forgive me for not believing you when you look at my daughter like some sort of food source." She said taking a step toward him. She continued to watch intently with her eyes looking between the wolf and Sophia.
Derrick didn't react to the emotions in her voice and kept his composure calm.
"Like I said. I mean no harm."
Derrick lifted his hands showing the timid sickly woman that he was not going to touch the beautiful sleeping girl before him. He then walked backwards as he continued to see if the sick looking lady would attack, but he was relieved to see her standing firmly at the doorway. Before leaping out of the window, he quickly glanced at Sophia seeing her stir in her sleep making him look upset once again.
Forcing himself to look away. Derrick jumped out the window running into the woods.
Ruby rushed toward Sophia as she saw the wolfman step out of their residence.
Stroking her daughters face, Ruby inspected the child to make sure no harm came upon her.
As she eyed her child, Ruby saw a scar developing upon the arm of her skin making her frown wanting to pick up a pitchfork and chase the beast off their lands.
Her daughter may be a sacrifice, but any wolfman causing bodily harm to the villagers on their domain was breaking the sacred law that protected them. Sophia was giving her life to save innocent lives, but some creature apparently didn't care to obey the laws given by the skies. If the monsters honestly wanted to already start attacking the chosen, Ruby would not stand for it.
Ruby sighed leaving her daughters room knowing she would need to inform the council about the disturbance that had happen tonight. She would not allow the creatures to start to hurt her people even though deep down she knew she wasn't really letting her daughter be spared.
