The creature continues, the bones clattering, punctuating every word. "You are the worst among them. Alpha hunter. Family breaker."
"Danica! Listen to me! You look into his eyes and in your head, he's telling you his worst fears. You have to look far.
She doesn't move and her skin gets cold. The scars on his body recede back into his flesh.
I don't know for sure what's going on, but I definitely know I can't let it continue.
"Look, Danica! Now!" I say, and it comes out like a terrible command.
And Danica does. He tore his gaze from the creature's soulless eyes. And Danica is breathing for the first time since I've been with her.
"Only you know what's in your heart, Champion. Only you know the truth of it. This creature cannot tell you who you are."
"What is this?" Wendigo's hissing question hits my face. "He's honest. A good and guiltless soul. What I wouldn't give to taste your sweet flesh, wolf."
