Chapter 4 - The Elders

The sun had just begun to set in the distant sky when I first heard the sound, a loud agonizing rumble. I saw it a few seconds later, the whirlwind of air and the electricity that folded into it.

The air rippled once more and everything dispersed. Once over, the noise was replaced by whispers and the sound of wet boots trampling the ground.

Cloaked individuals walked down the terrain of mud and grass. Kjorn and a few other soldiers met them in the middle and they tapped their chest in greeting. They stood in the marshes for about a couple minutes, speaking.

I watched the entire time. My eyes glued.

There were coming for me. Perhaps this was what I deserved?

Didn't I live a life of nothing, while others built the world and made it a better place, I chose to turn a blind eye to everything and everyone dear to me. I chose to close myself from the world, from society and their rules. Was this my retribution?

Shortly, they watched from every corner as if I were an exhibit animal.

A woman lifted the hood from her head. Under the fabric, she was severe looking, with thin square glasses. She took a few steps to the window and felt the dust on her finger tips.

"It smells of rot in here, no?" she said, loud enough I could hear from across the room.

A few others hummed in agreement.

"I apologize," Kjorn said, "we didn't have the time to prepare."

The woman shot a sharp look at her. "Why are we here Kjorn?"

"The research is coming together. Hildegard comes every morning and I understand, I understand The Crown's impatience—."

She ticked her tongue. "No. I didn't ask that. I asked why we're here Kjorn?"

Kjorn pursed her lips shut. "Because I…I wasn't able to preform."

"Exactly, we are here, in this downtrodden place because of you, KnightBarrow. Because of your incompetence."

Right now, bowing her neck at the floor, this was the most human she ever resembled. She didn't get to look like that. Her eyes—like pools of inky green, didn't get to reflect anything but a cold, remorseless soul. She was a monster, something immoral.

Something in me rose, something dark and instant. Before I could register the feeling, a ghost-like figure skimmed past my nose.

'Looks like they're fighting over you, Anomaly,'
