Chapter 26

Combat practice part 2

The next ones were Iria Monet and Edward Aston. They both gave a very estándar display, not earning any praise from the Professor.

Then came Iris Castel, the short girl with the sword.

"A Castel, uh?. How lucky of me to have two martial families in my class. Let's see if you have as much spirit as the Vance girl!" The Professor gave her the signal to start.

Iris unsheathed her sword and charged at the Professor. She was fast and agile, her thin sword was made more for stabbing than cutting so she aimed her stabs at vital points.

Siegfried was obverving the spar with interest. As someone who had trained with weapons most of his life, he has a good eye to gauge someone's skill, and this was definitely one of the best he has ever seen. But after a minute of relentless attacks on their professor, Siegfried started to notice a problem.

'She is not using magic at all. She hasn't done a single spell and it doesn't seem like she is using mana to augment her movements either.'

The professor also noticed this, he pushed her back and then stopped her before she could attack again.

"Enough! You have quite a bit of skill with that sword. But you have yet to show me any of your magic."

Iris lowered her head in shame.

"I…I don't have any, Professor."

"How is that possible?, with a rank A affinity and coming from a medium-tier noble family? Did they not teach you anything?" Asked The Professor.

"All of my house techniques are related to wind magic…I was born with fire affinity, so I can't use any of them." Iris was still looking at the ground, she looked to be filled with regret.

"I see…I understand the problem now. But fret not young one! You are my disciple now, and I promise you that we will find a solution to your problem!" Professor Garret gave her a thumbs up.

Iris nodded and gave a weak smile, didn't seem like she had that much faith in the Professor's promise but she appreciated the effort.

Next was Astoria, the 'commoner'. Her combat style was a more classical one, using only her wand to fight like Charles, Edward, and Iria. However, unlike them who only used spells from their affinity, Astoria was using both water and wind spells to overwhelm her opponent in a very masterful way.

The spar ended and she earned both Professor Garret's praise and the admiration of her classmates.

"That was soo good Astoria!" Said, Iria Monet. "You must have a high affinity in wind too, to be able to use it like that."

Hilda agreed. "Very impressive, I would like to spar with you one day."

"Tsk, she is still a commoner," Charles mumbled.

"Alright, let's see…Siegfried Lancaster, you are the last one. Come over here!" Professor Garret shouted.

Siegfried looked at the Proffesor.

'Even at the peak of my abilities, this man would have given me trouble. And now I must fight without my spear, just using this wooden stick.' He looked at his practice wand.

"But a King doest give up that easily." He whispered to himself.

"Go ahead, young Lancaster. Give it your best shot." The Professor opened his arms as if welcoming the attack.

Siegfried conjured a ball of fire with his wand and threw it toward his opponent.

Rank zero magic was usually all the same, no matter the affinity of the user. Unlike rank1 magic and higher, where the source of power for the spell is found in the user himself, rank zero magic uses ambient mana since Magus apprentices have yet to accumulate any mana inside their bodies.

Siegfried was different, He had already started his body cultivation journey and reached the second rank, energy gathering, and created a small pool of stored energy inside his dantian. This was comparable to what a rank 1 Magus would have, albeit on a much lower scale.

Because of this, Siegfried can use his internal energy to power his spells. However, He is just doing it by instinct. After being a martial cultivator for so many decades, it has become a costume to make use of his internal energy to power his techniques.

Professor Garret's eyes opened in shock when He saw the ball of fire flying toward him. It was easily three times bigger than the normal rank zero spells should be, and it felt a lot more menacing.

The professor decided to test its strength and let it hit his chest.

"Boom!"

The ball of fire exploded into flames as it hit their Professor. After the smoke dissipated, they all saw with no real surprise that Professor Garret was standing up. But He was very focused on his shirt, which has been slightly burned.

'That's very odd. Although is not very potent, all my clothes have some magic resistance, a rank zero spell cast by an apprentice should not be able to burn them.' The Professor thought.

He then gave Siegfried an intense glance.

"You are quite an interesting one" Garret smiled.

Siegfried noticed the expression of surprise on his classmates and his teacher.

'Did I do something unusual? I am sure I have cast the spell correctly…'

"Do we continue?" Asked Siegfried.

"Do you have anything stronger than that, young one?." Asked Garret.

Siegfried shook his head. He did have stronger techniques, but they weren't magic so He rather not show those, and he still needs to have a higher cultivation base to use them without suffering any harm.

"No, that is the only fire spell I have learned. I know some of the other elements but those are not suitable for combat."

The professor noded. "Very well, then we can end this first class here. I only wanted to see a little bit of what you can all do. We will start classes for real, tomorrow."
