Chapter 14 - Assassins

Veronica was shocked when William told her about his origin. She was completely taken aback when she realized that the man standing in front of her sight was a real vampire.

Not even in her wildest dreams had she imagined that she would encounter a real vampire. The fairy tales about those mythical creatures turned out to be true. She took a deep breath as she looked at William after collecting herself for a while.

"So, you were telling the truth, huh? I thought you were joking about those things over the dinner table. I really had dinner with a vampire!" Veronica whispered as she looked at William.

"Indeed, you just had dinner with a vampire. Consider yourself lucky because it's always a rare occasion when I share a dinner table with someone," William smiled as he looked back at Veronica with a gentle gaze.

Upon hearing William's comment, a bitter smile appeared on her face. She was already baffled and shocked about knowing those things about him and now he was making a silly joke at such a time.

"You said that I am lucky? Then tell me, William, are you going to kill me, or are you just going to suck my blood? That's what vampires do, right? I read in history books that vampires used to live amongst humans and feed on their blood. You might be different but you are still a vampire and so, you should be vulnerable around human blood too, right?" Veronica looked at William with a sharp gaze.

Hearing Veronica's bitter words, a smile appeared on William's face. The next moment, he took a step toward her and came close to her. He could feel her heartbeat loud and clear.

Seeing William suddenly shifting that close to her, Veronica's heart started beating faster and louder than usual again. She didn't feel any kind of fear from him despite knowing all those otherworldly things about him. This feeling was different from anything she ever experienced.

William settled Veronica's hair, that were flowing in the wind, behind her ear. After that, he looked at her curiously. She didn't try to get away from him and remained standing there looking back into his eyes.

William's gaze then fell on Veronica's lips. He gently touched her lips with his thumb and shifted his gaze into her eyes again.

"You are such an amusing woman. Despite knowing my identity, you are not scared. I can't sense fear in your eyes. Do you think you would be standing here alive if I decided to kill you?

"Indeed, you are right about vampires being vulnerable to the scent and taste of human blood. That is because they see humans as their food. But like I said, I am slightly different, I have full control over my body and its desires." William gently traced his thumb across Veronica's lips and whispered in her ears.

Veronica gulped as she felt William's warm breath on her neck when he said those words. She was barely able to control herself around him anymore.

Meanwhile, somewhere inside a dark alleyway, a group of people wearing black clothes could be seen walking in a particular direction. They were Nolan's people and at that time, they were heading toward the hotel to complete the job that Nolan gave them. All of them were carrying sharp swords in their hands and their faces were obscured with a dark cloth. Except for their eyes, every part of their body was covered.

"I am not getting a good feeling about it, killing a child… it's atrocious! What kind of an assassination mission is this? We can't just kill a child…" One of the figures whispered to another figure walking beside him.

"Yeah, this is not what I expected as well but we can't do anything about that. Didn't you see how he was behaving today? He was looking extremely desperate. I've never seen Lord Nolan acting like this. It's as if something huge is bothering him. Otherwise, why would he suddenly give the order to kill the woman whom he had been eyeing for such a long time? I don't get it, he was certainly afraid of something." Another man responded in a low voice.

Although he tried very hard to keep his voice down, both of these assassins got busted by the owner of a voice coming from the front row of the group.

"Two of you keep your mouth shut, otherwise I am going to get rid of you right now! Bastards, we are not going on a picnic trip, we are going to assassinate someone. How many times do I have to repeat the same thing?

"Oh, and one more thing, make sure you stay sharp when we reach there. We are lucky that the hotel is isolated from the main city and there is no movement at this time. We will go there, kill that woman and her child, and instantly leave this city after finishing our job, just like elder Olef told us to do." A man walking at the front exclaimed and said those words as he looked behind at the duo who were questioning the morality of the orders they were given.

After being berated by that cold voice, the duo turned silent and nodded their heads in response. The furiousness on their leader's face was apparent. He looked extremely pissed at these two assassins.

They were following the orders from elder Olef, who worked under young master Nolan and managed every dirty work for him. Their order this time was to kill the woman and her child before leaving the city for a while.

"Leader, what about the mercenaries who haven't come back yet? Are we going to do this mission without them?" One of the men asked another doubt as he looked at the man who was leading the group.

"They are assigned to keep an eye on that place. We will see them very soon," The leader responded, and subsequently, the group left the valley.

Meanwhile, somewhere inside the city.

"What happened?" Veronica asked as she looked at William with a worried face. A moment ago, he was very close to her and the next second, he completely ignored her presence and turned his gaze toward the direction of her hotel.

"We got company..." William's eyes flickered with redness for a millisecond as he said those words.

In the blink of an eye, he appeared behind her and grabbed her by her waist as he pulled her into his embrace. She could feel William's muscles around her back and became startled when he took her in his embrace.

Her face turned red and the next moment, she felt a familiar sensation. It was something she felt right before coming here.

Suddenly, both William and Veronica disappeared from that place like a pair of ghosts.
