The ambush came out of nowhere.

After my senses had warned me of potential trouble, I instructed my men to be prepared for anything.

But nothing could prepare us for the great numbers of our enemies.

Bandits and thugs were usually the only dangers on the road. Good-for-nothing troublemakers who attack unsuspecting caravans to rob and sometimes kill. There are usually only five to ten men per group due to their nature of looting and killing. 

But the men who attacked us were more than thirty. Or was it forty?

A scout must have seen us, spied on us, and followed us. The clearing was probably where we were found. The scout was alone; otherwise, they would've ambushed us last night when we were most vulnerable.

The scout had waited patiently, following us once we resumed our journey. And when he saw us enter the mining village, he rode away to inform his group of our position.
